In 2017, Steve was barely able to walk after undergoing gruelling treatment for leukaemia. Fast-forward to 2024 and he’s just completed the @londonmarathon to raise funds for life-changing leukaemia research! 👏🙌 Steve’s symptoms began with chronic back pain, which felt like it was “deep inside his bones” and unlike anything he’d experienced before. After several tests revealed his blood counts were continually dropping, he was referred to a specialist at the nearby cancer unit. “Ironically that day I had woken up with no back pain at all,” said Steve. “I was so convinced that I would be in and out in no time, I didn’t even say a proper goodbye to my two children. However, it became apparent very quickly that it was more serious than that.” Following a bone marrow biopsy, Steve was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL). He was placed on a clinical trial for a new drug, and remained in hospital for six weeks, undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy. Steve suffered from a number of side effects, including painful mouth ulcers, abscesses and extreme tiredness. But thankfully in July that year, he was told he was in remission. “I remember making promises to myself that if I came through this how my life would change – more active, more time with the kids, and more exercise,” said Steve. “But I was frustrated that I had no energy. Walking to the end of the path next to my home would wipe me out for hours.” Slowly, Steve regained his energy and strength, and after a year of incredible dedication and training, he completed the London Marathon! “What a fantastic day, the crowds were amazing and kept me going,” said Steve. “It was a privilege to be able to take part in such an amazing event, but to do so on behalf of Leukaemia UK made it even more special.” Steve has raised an incredible £4,300 to fund life-changing research - what an absolute hero! 🧡 #LondonMarathon #LondonMarathon2024 #AcutePromyelocyticLeukaemia #LeukaemiaAwareness #BloodCancerAwareness

In the early stages, Myeloma may not cause any symptoms. It's often only suspected or diagnosed after a routine blood or urine test. Eventually, Myeloma causes a wide range of problems, including: 1. Persistent dull ache or areas of tenderness in your bones 2. Weak bones that break (fracture) easily 3. Tiredness, weakness and shortness of breath – caused by anaemia 4. Repeated infections 5. Kidney problems 6. Today is World AML day 🩸 My sister Lauren fought Acute Myeloid Leukemia for almost 10 years. This photo is of Lauren receiving her second bone marrow transplant in 2016. AML is a rare cancer that starts in blood forming cells of the bone marrow. It is one of the most common types of leukemia in adults. This year about 20,000 people will be diagnosed with AML and about 10,000 of those people will die from this diagnosis. I’m sharing this with you all in hopes to bring awareness to this disease and one day see a world without blood cancer. @llsusa is paving the way for these dreams to come true for families like mine and future families that will know AML. Today is AML awareness day! A cancer I was diagnosed with at the age of 24 after beating Hodgkins Lymphoma (another type of blood cancer) at the age of 22. 🩸 Back in March I had the absolute pleasure of being invited to the lab where one of my doctors works to see the amazing research she’s doing to find kinder and more specific treatments for people with AML. Chemo is debilitating and takes so much from us so funding towards research like this is a must in order to give people a better future with less intense side effects. Today is AML Awareness Day 💙 #Acutemyeloidleukaemia (AML) is a #cancer of the blood and bone marrow and is the most common type of acute #leukaemia in adults. It’s aggressive and can quickly worsen if not treated🩸 In 2011, Leukaemia Foundation #ambassador @lyndeymilan lost her son to #AML only 3 days after his diagnosis. 🗣️ “My son Blair, a fit, wonderful 29-year-old who made a conscious choice to be happy and make others happy every day of his life died 12 years ago. “A month before, he went to a GP complaining of not feeling well. The doctor assumed Blair must be having panic attacks despite him being the most self-confident person you could ever meet. “He subsequently had his wisdom teeth out after gaining an infection. Blair didn’t want to worry me as my late partner John and I were overseas. I didn’t learn until too late that his mouth couldn’t hold the blood clots from the surgery and kept bleeding. The oral surgeon also failed to give him a blood test. At this point, Blair demanded a blood test, however, the next day he collapsed and was taken to hospital. Then, a call came through to Lyndey informing her that Blair had AML. “After his hospital admission, we found out. “We arrived at the hospital around 8am after the long journey back from Sicily. Finally around 1am we took him off everything and he officially died. It’s a long, very sad story. “I allowed his closest friends to come in and speak positively to him. I wouldn’t allow anything negative. Later, when we knew there was definitely no hope, I allowed them to come in and say goodbye. “The waiting room was full of family, about 30 friends from university were outside and another 20 school friends were at the pub down the road. “I subsequently met with the admitting doctor, the GP and the haematologist who said if they’d even got him one week sooner things could have been very different. Blair made a positive impression even in the short time he was in hospital and all who worked on him were affected.
