There’s no crying in baseball, but there definitely is in cancer treatment. Don’t worry—I’m not crying here. Just a little leaky eyed due to ocular GVHD. My new cells are a little riled up now that they’re no longer being suppressed and have started attacking some areas of my body, including my eyes, mouth, and “lady parts” (as my doctor called it 😂). Thankfully NO vital organs are being harmed, though my liver markers keep spiking and dropping for some unknown reason. However one of my favourite memories from the last couple of years, is walking the Coast to Coast with my Dad – a 195 mile walk from St Bee’s in Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay on the Yorkshire Coast. It was a real adventure and lots of memories were made along the way. The feeling of accomplishment when we made it to the end was amazing & I am looking forward to feeling that again when we cycle into Paris in June." This #NationalVolunteerWeek, we’re shouting out the dedication, passion, and selflessness of our volunteers like Larry Schryver 😍 Larry is truly making a difference in SoCal-Hawaii Region's #BloodCancer community! 🙌 "I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) in 2003 at the ag of 56. Prior to my diagnosis, I had been having a number of eye and ear infections which were treated with antibiotics. Because of these on-going infections, my doctor ordered an extensive round of blood tests. These tests revealed CLL. The diagnosis was confirmed by a bone marrow biopsy. At the time I was the Training Director for the Los Angeles County Probation Department. I revealed my diagnosis to my family and my boss, and remained on the job until I retired in 2007. While my condition was such that I could have been a candidate for treatment at the time of my diagnosis, my oncologist/hematologist decided that the best initial approach was watch and wait. I have been fortunate to be on watch and wait ever since I was diagnosed. In January 2011, I became a volunteer for LLS. I worked for most of the signature programs in the OCIE chapter office. My family and I have worked both Light the Night events in Orange County and the Inland Empire since 2011. Shortly after I began my volunteer work, I was trained as a First Connection volunteer. Since September 2012, I have been the First Connection Volunteer Program Coordinator for the OCIE Chapter, and I provide First Connection Volunteer Program Coordinator assistance to the SoCal-Hawaii Region: California Southland Chapter and the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter. First Connection is a powerful program, a win-win. My team member asked if they could raise funds in my honor, and the college fundraising was surpassing the law office, so the LLS coordinator divided up the team into the law office and the college teams. Later, the coordinator invited me to be on the board for the walks, so I did that several years. I was asked to join the First Connection Peer to Peer Program and conducted the First Connection peer conversations for years. A couple of years ago, I became a Family Outreach Coordinator and then a First Connection coordinator. I have assisted with a few other activities as well.
