“With refractory lymphoma, it's not going to go away… it's a bit of a diva.” Jay was diagnosed with cancer twice in one year - but they credit their drag alter ego for getting them through gruelling treatment. Shanika Sunrise was created while Jay was being treated for Hodgkin lymphoma in 2017, aged 19. The artist from Manchester said they feared they were “going to die many times” and decided to “camp this up and make something fabulous” in a “horrible situation”. Faced with the prospect of losing their hair, friends decided to buy Jay a "lilac wig with bangs", and they started wearing make-up for hospital treatment. Aged 26, the drag artist is now in remission and has since gone on to star in countless gigs as Shanika and toured internationally with queens from RuPaul's Drag Race. Qué bonito se siente vivir experiencias que hace 1 año no podía vivir. Que si la quimioterapia, los síntomas secundarios, los virus de las demás personas, la inmunosupresión, el miedo a enfermarme, y un sin fin de cosas más. Aún sigo en tratamiento, que no es para nada lo que yo esperaba. Yo juraba que en unos meses desde ese diagnóstico del 2022, ya terminaría todo. Y bueno, no fue así. Dios así lo quiso. Y quién soy yo realmente para exigirle más? Quién soy yo realmente para preguntarle algún "por qué"? Si todo lo que hace en mi vida, es perfecto, me guste o no. Si todo tiene su propio tiempo, que no es necesariamente el mío (y casi nunca lo es) Hoy vivo cosas maravillosas que hace 1 año ni siquiera me esperaba. Hoy vivo situaciones mucho mejores que las que yo soñaba. Entonces, por qué no dejamos que la vida fluya a su propio ritmo (al ritmo del que está allá arriba✝️), y nosotros solo le seguimos el paso? Que todo lo que tenemos en este presente es muy bonito como para no aprovecharlo. Que el regalo más hermoso del mundo es haber despertado hoy, tener un día más de vida para aprovecharlo y ser felices. Solo eso 🤍🙏🏽 Hoy puedo trabajar, salir a pasear, usar el transporte público, moverme e ir a donde yo quiera CUANDO yo quiera, sin preocuparme por tener dolor, o miedo. This new peice is, well, new for me. I created this sculptural piece for the show "Breaking Ground", where the theme is to try something new or different. @lafontseegalleries I normally use oils but for this piece I used black 4.0 ( the blackest black! @culturehustle )acrylic paint to create this super matte and deep black finish. The meaning behind this work is also more revealing personally than my landscapes. See my corresponding statement here: "Spring 2023. At 27 years old I was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma, a rare and highly aggressive, fast growing cancer. I went through months of intensive chemotherapy. During this time I was more of a home-body. I couldn’t go out much or see many people because I was severely immunocompromised, exhausted, just trying to survive and make it to the next day. I felt betrayed by my body. I felt like a stranger in my own home. I felt like my body wasn’t mine anymore. What I thought was safe and meant to protect me, support me, help me, was actually trying to kill me. In this piece I wanted to convey the sense of these objects, representing the body and the home, to being voids. The title is a play on the term homebody. It takes on new meaning referring to my body as my home. Cancer stripped away my entire being, leaving a void behind. Today we napped on the couch (again peep the most amazing eye massager thanks to @beccajonespinyerd and @ajpinyerd) and made sure to get some fresh air. Not going to lie…today was my hardest day so far. Lots of aches and pain, nausea, and fatigue…not to mention we had a puking kiddo up most of the night. I cannot thank everyone enough for all the love, prayers, food, help, and anything else anyone is doing for our family. Dearest friends on the internet, Everyone, please remain calm. The time has arrived to shut down your laptop, gather your personal belongings, and run like your feet are on fire away from your office. It is officially Bob O'clock. Let the celebrations begin! And, by 'celebrations' I mean...stopping at the grocery store on your way home and loading up your shopping cart with all the fixin's for a weekend Snackapalooza! Just get one of everything on the snack aisle. Then head to the ice cream cooler and get as much chocolate ice cream as you can cram in your cart. Don't forget to get some chocolate and caramel sauce for the toppings. And be sure to get some Diet Coke...if you drink Diet Coke while snacking on everything else, it will cancel out all of the calories you're consuming. All is going well at my house. My day started off a bit rough because the woman overslept. There I was at 4:00 AM sitting in front of an empty food dish while she was curled up in bed lounging around sleeping. She said she did not oversleep because she never had intentions of getting up that early. This just proves my point. She is slacking on the job. In other news, I have reached a bit of a stalemate with Miss Daisy. Recently I decided to work on my book while napping...uh...I mean sitting in the comfy bed the woman placed in my office. It was never intended to solely belong to Daisy; however, she laid claim to it. Well, as the manager of this house, I am allowed to make changes as I see fit. I saw fit to lay claim to the bed as mine earlier this week. She has pitched a fit every time I've worked there. There are approximately 347 beds with cozy cushions in this house. Why she thinks she can dictate who sleeps in them when I'm the manager of the house is far beyond me. I fear it's going to be a long weekend but I will persevere. I am certainly glad for this vile week to be in our rearview mirrors. My chemo treatment wasn't too bad this week but it certainly was no fun. I'm ready to rest up this weekend and come back full force next week. I hope you all have a relaxing snack-filled Friday night. I look forward to talking with you all tomorrow. Very truly yours, Bob

This week, we managed a quick trip to Houston, visiting MD Anderson Cancer Center. Although I have cancer, I am asymptomatic. All cancers are similar, but very different. I have a low grade NH lymphoma. It’s so important to me that people do not feel sorry for me—I honestly feel so grateful. Yes, the initial diagnosis was a hard pill to swallow. I ached so badly for my husband and my three young children. It took me almost 2 weeks to tell my parents and siblings. I felt guilt and I was concerned about the impact this would have on them. I didn’t know if the anxiety that I had never experienced before would ever go away. This journey is not an easy one and I wish I could choose a different path. However, it has already given me so much. I have a new perspective on things and I have so much more appreciation for life. I smile more, I stop and smell the roses more, I give more, I love more, I run more, and I pray more. If someone/something tries to knock you down, that should be your inspiration to do better, well I’m inspired to do better! Cancer is such a social taboo and I think this is a big reason early detection is often missed. I pray this changes someday. I am so grateful for all of the texts, calls, and messages. Infelizmente na segunda-feira (22/04) voltei para o hospital... Tive uma recidiva e o tumor deixou de responder à quimioterapia, então na semana passada fiz 2 sessões de radioterapia em todo o intestino para tentar diminuir as massas tumorais. Apesar da dose ter sido baixa, sabíamos que havia a probabilidade de uma rutura intestinal, que infelizmente acabou por acontecer. Por sorte é pequena e para já estou a tratar com antibiótico, mas não posso beber líquidos, nem fazer esforço nenhum com o abdómen... Mas também há boas notícias, as massas tumorais estão a diminuir o que abre novamente uma possibilidade de cura no estrangeiro 🙏🍀 PS: se se estão a perguntar porque é que estou com este ar de elefantezinho, é por causa dos 30 mg de corticóide que tomo todos os dias, na esperança que controle a evolução do tumor, mas parece que já não está a funcionar. Um dia de cada vez, mas para já estou a reagir bem e hoje está a ser um dia bom! 🤗 Ainda não fiz nenhuma medicação para a dor mas tenho de estar sempre muito quietinha, estilo Cleópatra… 😂
