These little balls of cookie perfection were among the recipes I prepared in my @lymphomacommunity @lymphomaresearchfoundation Zoom class on Sunday. They’re Greek butter cookies (Kourabiedes) and are amazingly delicate and tender. Not too sweet either, even with that lovely coat of confectioners’ sugar. Freeze well too! And so easy to bake! Here’s how: KOURABIEDES 1 cup unsalted butter 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup ground almonds 1 egg yolk 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt confectioners’ sugar for coating ground cloves, optional Beat the butter with an electric mixer set on medium speed for 2-3 minutes, or until it is light and fluffy. Add the flour and almonds and mix for a minute or two until the ingredients are well blended. Add the egg yolk, confectioners’ sugar and salt and beat until ingredients are well blended and a uniform dough has formed. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour. Preheat the oven to 325 degreesF. Take off pieces of dough and shape them into balls about 1-inch in diameter. Place the balls on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for about 25 minutes or until they are lightly tanned. Let cool. Roll the cookies in confectioners’ sugar to coat the entire surface. Place on a serving tray and sprinkle with ground cloves if desired. We did it! @excitedmuppet and I rode 25 miles and climbed over 1,500 feet to raise funds and awareness for Lymphoma Research and in support of @danielleb1076 and all others battling blood cancer. Not gonna sugar coat it; the "rolling" course was really tough but every time I struggled, I remembered theirs and pushed harder. Shout out to the @lymphomacommunity and the @thecomusinn for a beautiful event, from breakfast, to the opening ceremony, the beautiful backdrop of Sugarloaf Mountains, the plentiful aid stations that included mini crabcakes, the energetic volunteers and the delicious celebration lunch...it was all wonderful. Even better, I finished my ride with my husband, sons and guest of honor Danielle smiling and cheering for me. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy but we can do hard things. The #scaries have been back for free play in full swing 😱 Just a few days before our vacation — oh Saint-Tropez, I miss you 🇫🇷— I began to have terrible back pain 😨 which interfered with my activities and kept me at the house, albeit by the pool at a beautiful vacation home 🏖️ I pushed myself and joined my family and friends when I could, but something was not right 🤷🏻♀️And when I saw the neuro-oncologist, she, of course, ordered an MRI 🩻🤦🏻♀️ #scanxiety #scanxietyisreal 😳😬 The report is in and I’ve spoken to my doctor👩🏻⚕️ I have a vertebral compression fracture at L1, 😔 but there’s no recurrence, no cancer, no lymphoma cells in my cerebrospinal fluid (like in 2/2022 when I also had back pain)💃 #happydance 👯♀️ So yes, I’m happily in pain or painfully happy 🙃 #amirite 🤷🏻♀️ #grateful #takingmylifeback #gettingbettereveryday #chemohair #donor #donorsareheroes #stemcelltransplant #graftvshostdisease #gvhd #gvhdrash #mouthsores #bethematch @memorialsloankettering #mskcc #nonhogkinslymphoma #lymphomaawareness #leukemiaandlymphomasociety #lymphomasociety #lymphomaresearchfoundation #lymphomaresearch #thepatientstory #conquercancer

🩸☀️ �Yes, it’s me again, and I’m on an an airplane ✈️ on my way to Saint-Tropez ⛱️ I never thought I’d go on vacation this soon — 2 years since diagnosis — and actually travel internationally, something I rarely did before lymphoma (BL). But I asked my doctor 👩🏻⚕️ and you guessed it… permission granted ✅ Nevertheless, even with proper pre-certification, this was no easy task. My medications could have used their own suitcase 💊🧳 Lol I should have taken a photo of that 🤦🏻♀️ The week before departure was somewhat scary, making us think we should just stay in bed 🛌 It all began on Wednesday 8/30/2023 (just 4 days before takeoff) when I received 2 vaccines: shingles and polio💉and had a routine follow-up CT scan 🩻 #scanxiety #scaries The scan showed some mucousy things in the left lower lobe of my lungs 😳😬 but I was assured that this was an infectious inflammatory process from a previous cold/cough, and there was NED ❤️💚 I had been scheduled for labs, an EKG, echocardiogram, pulmonary function study and a routine examination on Thursday🩸🩺 But those things didn’t happen. Instead, late Wednesday night or very early Thursday morning, I started moaning and groaning and crying in my sleep 🤕 My temperature was 101.6 🤒 and my entire body ached 😖 By Thursday afternoon, after additional testing @memorialsloankettering in Basking Ridge, I was feeling better, and my doctors determined the cause of the episode was the shingles vaccine, AND I could go on vacation to Saint-Tropez ✈️ ☀️⛱️ 📸 So in this picture — 1. 🩸“Out damned spot! out I say!” ~ Lady Macbeth 🙆🏻♀️ So… my hair is thinning on the top of my head — I know, right?! 🤦🏻♀️ And I had this red, slightly raised spot in the same area of my scalp for about 2 weeks (maybe more) 🔴 but I couldn’t see it 🙄 until CRO took photos. It didn’t look like my GvHD rash nor did it itch, which made it all the more scary #amirite 🤷🏻♀️ (see story photo). 📸 What is it: a pimple, a permanent bug bite (I don’t think so), an isolated allergic reaction (again no) or, in more scientific terms, a red spot? ❌ But remember, I’m a cancer patient. 💉🦠 Therefore, the differential diagnosis includes melanoma. 🤔 Survivors of non-hodgkin’s lymphoma are at increased risk of developing secondary cancers, including melanoma skin cancer #scaries 😳😬 💉🧫 And so… yesterday (8/23/2023), I saw a new dermatologist who says the spot is benign, insignificant. Of course, we have to wait 7 days for the results of the biopsy — yes, the new doctor cut the thing off 😷🔪— but it looks like the good magical juju was on our side. 🧞♀️💉 In fact, the doctor was very confident. #grateful ☺️ He gave the red thing a name, but I forget. #chemobrain 🙃 CRO can’t remember it either.
