May is National Cancer Research Month. šŸ”¬ The month highlights the importance of cancer research and the vital role of study and experimentation in finding cures. In honor of this month, we thought we would share some recent positive developments and breakthroughs in cancer research, as well as some organizations whose work and efforts are worth supporting. - Researchers in the US have developed a new test that identifies 18 early stage cancers with a 93% accuracy rate in men and 84% accuracy rate in women. - Precision oncology is a new treatment approach that causes less harm to healthy cells and fewer side effects for patients by studying the genetic makeup and molecular characteristics of cancer tumors in individual patients. - CAR-T-cell therapy is a new treatment that uses immune cells to hunt down and destroy cancer cells, and was recently declared a success for leukemia patients. We are committed to supporting cancer research and working with technology to pave the way forward in cancer care! #wearehere #here #cancersupport #cancer #cancerrescources #socialimpact #cancersucks #Dontignorestageiv #cancercaregiver #stage4needsmore #caregivertips #survivorship #ayacancer

Keep the Faith! Today's my dad's 90th birthday! As a policeman he faced many challenges, and as he rose in rank, from patrolman to sergeant, lieutenant, captain, district commander and deputy chief of operations, he had many more responsibilities towards protecting the city of Cleveland and its' 600,000+ citizens. I can remember as a youth, my dad getting phone calls at our only phone in the kitchen from fellow policemen asking for advice and direction. As he concluded all his calls he'd say to them "Keep the faith". This mantra was important to me as I battled cancer. #survivingcancer #headandneckcancer #cancersupport #survivingheadandneckcancer #cancersupportgroup #beatingcancer #cancersurvivor #supportingcancerpatients #headandneckcancerawareness #headandneckcancersupportgroup #cancercare #cancercaregiver #lovecaregivers #caregiversupport #caregiversareheroes #throatcancer #chemotherapy

R&R as a caregiver is a REAL THING! Mom life takes over and caregiving envelops every millisecond of time in a day. Thereā€™s little energy left for refilling the empty cup, but the expectation to continue to pour from an empty cup never stops. Over the next few posts I will be reintroducing myself as the woman I have learned to become in hopes to bring some reality to life as a mom of 4, with 3 real jobs, 2 dogs as well as being a cancer caregiver. Everyone has their journey and this is mine. I will be sharing the journey that I never could have dreamed would be my life and the day-by-day, step-by-step lifestyle cancer, grief and trauma have taught me. This trip to the ocean and all its beauty were 5 incredible days of rest and relaxation that my soul needed without judgement and without the peer pressure of daily life. Unforgettable and yet made me painfully aware coming home that the fairytale couldnā€™t last forever. Was it one of the hardest things in the world to leave the kids home to take care of myself? Yes and I debated going until the day I left. It was a lot of work to pre-prep leaving. Thankfully I had recruited my college daughter to come home and help. What did I learn from this trip? That it is okay to take time for myself. It isnā€™t selfish or a negative thing. It is called self love and survival when you have no one filling your cup, itā€™s okay to take the time to allow yourself to rejuvenate. In the beginning, I created this page to share the physical aspect of creating a healthier person. Over the last 6 years, I have been living in a state of ongoing unrelieved stress, depression and anxiety. Therefore the new purpose of this page is sharing how I am learning to become a healthier human mentally, emotionally and physically. Hopefully this helps someone on their journey.ā¤ļøšŸ’• #cancercaregiver #momof4 #griefjourney #holistichealing #healingfromtheinsideout #restandrelaxation #momlife #momjourney #trauma #traumarecovery #depression #anxiety #mentalstrength #stress #stressrelief #therapy #judgementfreezone #lifeisajourney #lifeisshort #timeisathief

We are here for those struggling with grief. A common misconception is that grief is only about death. People who live with cancer may grieve for many things, such as a loss of their sense of health and security, changes to future plans, or economic stress. ā€œAs for grief, youā€™ll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, youā€™re drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. And all you can do is float. You find some piece of the wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe itā€™s some physical thing. Maybe itā€™s a happy memory or a photograph. Maybe itā€™s a person who is also floating. For a while, all you can do is float. Stay aliveā€ #wearehere #here #cancersupport #cancer #cancerrescources #socialimpact #cancersucks #Dontignorestageiv #cancercaregiver #stage4needsmore #caregivertips #survivorship #ayacancer

#Repost ā€”ā€” Fatima Sheriff has been MD Andersonā€™s chief of staff since September 2018 and a health care professional for more than 25 years. But she was still caught off-guard when her husband, Marc Frappier, received a stage II throat cancer diagnosis last spring. Sheriff felt better once Marc started treatment at MD Anderson and they got to know his care team. Her confidence grew as his treatment progressed. ā€œMarc and I have often talked about how some cosmic path brought us here, not knowing that one day weā€™d be patient and caregiver,ā€ she says. ā€œBut MD Anderson is the best cancer center in the world. This was me after my biopsy. Second biopsy at that. In March 2019 I was diagnosed with Hodgkinā€™s lymphoma. Apparently there was a big ass tumor in between my lungs and heart which restricted the blood flow in my system and caused numerous blood clots in my veins. This explains why I felt my face swelling up like a balloon everyday. Iā€™m sharing this photo to show people yes, I know what itā€™s like to get a biopsy. I know what itā€™s like to get 2. I know what itā€™s like to be waiting to be called by the hospital and nerves that come with wondering if the tumor is malignant or benign. I know what itā€™s like to wonder if Iā€™m about to die soon or what. At 29 years old Iā€™ve heard the fatal words ā€œyou have cancerā€. Those are some of the words Iā€™ll never forget. #CancerPatient #cancersurvivor #cancersupport #ibeatcancer #cancercaregiver

Today we are highlighting some superfoods that have major health benefits and are a delicious addition to your diet! Matcha is a type of green tea stemming from traditional practices in China and Japan. This tea has a robust, and earthy umami flavor, and is packed with antioxidants. Many of the beneficial components of matcha have even been researched for their anti-cancer properties! There are extensive cohort studies which examine the consumption of green tea and inverse effects of gastric cancers. AƧaĆ berries may be small, but theyā€™re packed with health-protective vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds. Typically, fresh aƧaĆ berries are not sold in the U.S., but you can still get the benefits from juiced and frozen forms of the fruit. AƧaĆ berries are rich in protective phytochemicals, which are plant compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants help protect against oxidative stress, a process that otherwise can lead to cellular damage and diseases including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. #matchalove #matcha #coffeealternative #cancerfighting #superfood #wearehere #here #cancersupport #cancer #fckcancer #cancerrescources #socialimpact #cancersucks #Dontignorestageiv #cancercaregiver #stage4needsmore #caregivertips #survivorship #ayacancer

This week, April 21st-27th, is recognized as National Infertility Awareness week. By acknowledging the impacts that cancer and treatment have on fertility, we can help our community members make informed decisions. It is not uncommon for cancer and its treatments to affect fertility and leave some patients with temporary or permanent infertility. When our co-founder, Shea Mencel was in treatment for breast cancer, she chose to preserve fertility through IVF and embryo creation, despite her oncologist telling her she didnā€™t need to. If she had not listened to herself, she would not be able to have biological children now. Shea is currently on a surrogacy journey for her first child since she cannot safely carry without risk to her life. This has been a huge financial burden to her. At We Are Here, we firmly believe that the decision to start a family should not be dictated by financial constraints or limitations due to cancer treatment options. That's why we are committed to forging partnerships with organizations that can help make fertility preservation and family planning more affordable. We Are Here to provide guidance, support, and resources to help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health. #infertilityawarenessweek #infertility #surrogacy #fertility #breastcancer #wearehere #here #cancersupport #cancer #cancerrescources #socialimpact #cancersucks #Dontignorestageiv #cancercaregiver #stage4needsmore #caregivertips #survivorship #ayacancer

šŸŒŸ I had the honor to share my journey and the work I passionately engage in as a cancer coach on the UK Yes to Life Radio Show. šŸ’« It was a valuable opportunity to share awareness and provide some understanding of how we can better support cancerĀ patients and their families. šŸŒŸ In our discussion, we explored the complexities that cancer patients and their families face from a cancer diagnosis throughout treatment and into recovery. šŸ’«Itā€™s crucial to understand that their journey extends beyond medical treatments - itā€™s a test of emotional and mental resilience. šŸŒŸAs a cancer coach, I aim to provide guidance and support, helping those affected by cancer better navigate these challenging times. šŸ’« Letā€™s continue these critical discussions on providing adequate support and guidance to cancer patients and their families. #cancersupport #cancercommunity #cancercare #cancercaregiver #cancerpatient #cancersurviver #cancerfighter #cancerthriver #cancerrecovery #cancerresilience #breastcancersurvivor #cancerawareness #breastcancerawareness #thrivingnotsurviving #youngbreastcancer #youngbreastcancersurvivor #isabelgaliano

Medicinal cannabis, or medical marijuana, has been used by cancer patients to help with symptoms ranging from nausea and loss of appetite to pain and sleeplessness to depression and anxiety. Patients have reported that cannabis and its non-psychoactive competent, cannabidiol or CBD, provide relief for a number of symptoms and treatment side effects.ā  ā  At our 15th Annual Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer in 2019, Dr. Chen, then Director of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative, spoke on cannabis and its potential for cancer treatment. ā  ā  Click the link in our bio to learn more about medicinal cannabis and watch Dr. Chen's presentation or go to https://pancreatic.org/pancreatic-cancer/supportive-care/cannabis/ā  ā  If you wish to add medicinal cannabis to your treatment, it should be through a medical professional. I am frequently asked how Sean is, and while I appreciate the question, you can see what goes through my mind in that moment. Recently, someone added the word "today" to the end of her question and in my mind, it made all the difference. How does this sit with you? Do you appreciate when people ask about your loved one? Do any of my thoughts resonate? Would adding the word "today" feel helpful to you? Share in the comments! "In July 2012, my husband, Len, had his yearly physical and called me on the way home to tell me that he received an excellent report, and I could not get rid of him yet. We went to the county fair a month later, and he complained about pain in his side. We thought it was because we had been on a ride that jerked us around. Two weeks later, he was still complaining and said he was going to the doctor. I immediately left work to meet him there because this was not a normal situation. He received a scan and then was immediately scheduled for a colonoscopy. The results were not what we imagined ā€” stage IV colon cancer ā€” and we were in a battle from that day forward. Len was 47, and our son was 11. At the young age of 48, Len was gone. His battle lasted only nine months." Yvette joined us at Call-on Congress this year to share her story with her members of Congress. She was moved by the experience, sharing, "without our voices, we will never be able to make people understand how dire the need is for funding and research for a disease that is detectable." . . . #PrioritizeCRC #ColorectalCancer #ColonCancer #RectalCancer #Caregiver #CancerCaregiver #Advocacy #CancerAdvocate
