मैं, अनन्या। A birthday post is mandatory, isn't it? Posting here after a long time because it's been very hectic for me and my business lately. Amidst healing from a personal loss and a new brand, @sutkatha, coming up on the horizon, it's been chaos from all sides. Today, as I turn a year older and hopefully wiser too (31! Officially in the early thirties now), if there’s one thing that I could tell my past self about starting my journey to being more mindful of what I consume mentally as well as physically, it would be to not feel like I have to replace everything according to my needs at once! Once I slowed down and made myself a priority, everything started making more sense. This *might* sound obvious, but had I known that making even small changes at a time would lead to a huge difference for my mental health and the environment that I was living in, then I probably would have done some things differently. While I’m generally a ‘look to the future’ person, it’s important that we learn how to self-reflect and implement changes from our past and daily learnings. It’s literally how we grow and evolve as humans. So how have I learnt from my past behaviours? That growth and healing don't happen all at once. It's a journey and every single step in the right direction helps. And it's ok to approach it like that! So that's my love note to my past me. Can you relate? Hopefully, I'll get back to work soon. Till then, here's one of my favourite customized journals I made a while ago when I was taking custom orders in Feb. I'm not taking custom orders now, but I forgot to post pictures of this one. It has a beautiful light lilac coloured petal-embedded handmade paper cover. A small cut-out frame with a dried gerbera from my garden is gracing the journal on top, with copper wires meshed over it and rubbed with copper wax and UV protection sealant and varnish. This journal has a mix of writing and watercolor papers inside. The first picture also features the gorgeous "Wizard" handmade dip pen from Mrida. This particular book from the "Tattered Yet Strong" collection is my absolute favourite because of various reasons. It's the chonkiest one in the collection (and probably the thickest A5 journal I have made in a long time) and if you know me, you know how much I love thick and hefty books! 😁 I love the color gradation on the base denim in this one which creates a gorgeous ombre effect on both sides, especially the back cover. It beautifully highlights the collage of embroidered denim bits on top. It has taken me more than 18 hours to create this book. मैं, अनन्या। मैं, मृदा। It's the fourth anniversary of Mrida today and I just realised that while I am constantly creating things on this account I hope you LOVE, it's been a while since I've popped my head up and said an official HELLO! So in case you're new here OR maybe you could have been part of my community for a while now but want to learn something new about me, here are a few things to help you get to know the person behind this little art studio! 1: Mrida is a sustainable stationery brand run by a one-woman-army and I launched it 4 years ago on Women's Day. 💁🏻 2 : I have no self control when it comes to buying books, plants and sarees. 🙈 3 : I have an inexplicable dislike for loud and neon colours. I love muted colours and it can be seen in my work aesthetics as well. I try to use bright colours every once in a while but they're always clubbed with neutral tones to bring some kind of balance. 4 : I am very passionate about handlooms and textiles and hence, I am planning something HUGE this year which will be a tribute to my appreciation for Indian textiles. I haven't done anything like that before, so fingers crossed! 🤞🏻 5 : Annnd of course, I LOVE making books in which people create and preserve special memories. I create functional and *beautiful* spaces for their artworks. Creating a creative space that intrinsically represents my patrons gives me the greatest joy. And thanks to Marie Kondo, we know that if it sparks joy, we should absolutely keep doing it. I approach bookbinding as a form of art and it can be seen in my exclusive collections. Ink-making is a thing for people who have immense patience and observation skills, because of which I have been quite fascinated with the art of Ink-making. And botanical/natural inks are my absolute favourite to paint with, since they're "living" colours. They change over time; sometimes darkening, sometimes lighter in shade and some pH sensitive ones changing their colour altogether depending on the kind of paper you use. It's a magical world and brings out the awestruck kid in me! 🤩 I have been experimenting with botanical and natural inks for the last 3 years and I finally felt confident to share whatever I have discovered in this beautiful journey. I will share more about each ink in detail, soon! I was fairly surprised and excited when some of you wanted to order the inks separately from the Artist Subscription Box that they were a part of originally. Since the Nomad Collection is an autumn collection, I am finding it difficult to work on it due to lack of inspiration from the nature around me. So, after a long gap of more than 3 years, I have decided to open slots for custom orders of journals for a month. Please message me to get in touch if you would like to get something customised. I have not been taking custom orders from scratch because they limit my artistic expression and the waiting time for each order increases a lot, but right now I am struggling with finding the motivation to work on my collections whole-heartedly. As I have slowly started my healing journey with chronic illness (Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia), I have become more intentional with my work than I ever was. Everything is done at a slower pace, keeping in mind that my physical and mental health should be able to accommodate my work and not the other way around. That’s a WRAP, 2022! And a big hello to the year 2023! As I head into the New Year and resume work properly in my studio, there’s one word I have on my mind that I want to embody throughout the year when it comes to my work and myself. And that word is KINDNESS. I have been ignoring my mind and body for far too long and prioritizing my work over them. It resulted in a lot of health issues for more than a year and I have been struggling to find my ground. But this year, I am going to love my body as much as I love my work, my art and my craft. I am going to be more kind to the child inside my head who's having a tough time trying to balance everything on her own. I am going to be more kind to all the wonderful people in my life who reach out to me and take care of me during my healing days, despite my crankiness and sickness. I want 2023 to be the time where I really take care of my health first, get even more intentional about how I run my business and most importantly my life so that I can bring you my best work, the best support, the best outcomes, and run things true to my values always. मैं, अनन्या। Here is one of my tiny experiments with nature at the Nisargopchar Ashram. I am leaving this place today and I am happy to say that staying here for three weeks was worth it. Even though I have a long way to go in my journey of managing my health issues completely, I am positive that following the principles I learnt here are definitely going to help me in the long run. I hope to come back again next year for detoxification and rejuvenation. Until then, it's time to go back home, implement the things I have learnt here, and balance my work and lifestyle in a better way. I took an unplanned break for a week from social media. I went to my hometown, spent time with my family and friends and all this while, I didn't bother to check my phone most of the time. It felt good. Now that I am resuming work again, I wish I had paid more attention to my health. It's been a difficult year for me health-wise and I intend to start the new year with a healthier version of myself. Therefore, I will be taking a month's break for my treatment in December. मैं, मृदा। Here's me, starting the process of making The Nomad Collection, 2022. This would be the third consecutive edition of this Collection and I am always so excited about it. This year, due to my health constraints and other work commitments, this collection has gotten delayed but I'm not going to miss out working on it completely. Afterall it's the most awaited and beloved collection of the year by Mrida. If you have been with me on this journey for a long time, you would remember that I started working on Collections exactly two years ago and The Nomad Collection was the first one when I released my products on a particular theme. The Nomad collection celebrates mother nature in its raw and rustic form. Even though all my work has revolved around this concept since Mrida's inception, this collection was a prelude to a bolder step that I eventually took with respect to how I wanted to work and on what terms. No wonder this Collection is closest to my heart till date! I do not want to let go of that memory, and therefore, I decided to revisit this Collection every year in fall. मैं, मृदा। Here's a little glimpse from my last late-night ink-making session. 1 litre of plant material and water was eventually reduced into 50 ml of ink after almost 2 hours. Ink-making is a thing for people who have immense patience and observation skills, because of which I have been quite fascinated with the art of Ink-making. I have been experimenting with botanical and natural inks for the last 2 years and I finally felt confident to share whatever I have discovered in this beautiful journey. I will share more about it in detail, soon! I recently launched my botanical inks as part of the Pitara artist subscription boxes in the last shop update. I was fairly surprised and excited when some of you wanted to order the inks separately as well. मैं, मृदा। Ever had a moment where you feel like you have it completely together as an eco-passionate artist? Yeah, me neither! 😂 But I DO feel like I am closer to being happy with where I am at, on the days when I remind myself that the world doesn't need 10 people living perfectly, it needs 1million people doing what they can to reduce plastic waste each day. I stopped buying plastic fineliners and refill/use-and-throw pens a long time ago. I only use dip pens and fountain pens now. I made the switch to reduce plastic waste in my daily practice and it not only has made a great impact on my art process but also the little things I take care of, so as to not harm the environment. It has given my work, so much depth and variation, both literally and figuratively. It was the sole reason why I wanted to introduce Mrida's own handmade wooden dip pens for writing, sketching and calligraphy! They are called "The Wizard" because they create magic despite being made from salvaged wood collected from timber shops. It's a product I am super proud of. How about you? They are called "The Wizard". There are 8 one-of-a-kind dip pens in this upcoming shop update. These pens are made of salvaged birch wood and handcarved by my father from scratch. Made with a lot of love and care, these pens are a piece of nostalgia that my father holds close to his heart. He used to write with dip pens and pens made of quills in his childhood, when ball pens were either not available often or were too expensive to afford for a family of modest means. Dip pens were staple in every household in India and he grew up seeing his father and grandfather make and use them on a daily basis. Now, we call these pens 'artist supplies' but there was a time when the basic dip and feather pens were used by everyone. I wish to revive those simpler times. Now, regarding a few queries that you might have, you can use any type of drawing, mapping or calligraphy nib with it. You can use any liquid medium too, except acrylics. I use drawing inks, sumi inks, fountain pen inks, metallic inks, botanical inks, homemade inks and even watercolors with dip pens. You will have to buy nibs separately. The nibs used in the pictures are for demonstration purposes only. I can also send the nibs to you according to your requirement, if you would like that. Handmade wooden dip pens for writing, sketching and calligraphy! They are called "The Wizard". The reason I have always been inclined towards art is perhaps because I inherited it in my genes. While my mother is a textile artist, my father makes wooden sculptures. I have always been in awe of his patience when it comes to wood carving. He sands the wooden pieces for DAYS till they are buttery smooth! And then he carves his pieces endlessly till he feels as unapologetic as his art. I love how he never conforms to techniques and goes where his imagination takes him. That's what makes his work priceless. It is nothing extraordinary but what's special about these pieces is that they are bold, crude and unconventional. They evoke a sense of aesthetics that doesn't try too hard to please, in a world that runs on trends and flattery. There will be 8 one-of-a-kind dip pens in the upcoming shop update. मैं, मृदा। Here is another page from my Adult Coloring Book from the Nurture Collection that I colored with watercolors. This artwork was originally designed a long time ago, for a commission piece in a large A3 size and painted with my own home-brewed botanical inks, varnished with UV sealant and watercolor fixative. But as forgetful as I am, I forgot to take pictures of it because I had to ship it urgently. Thankfully, I had the rough sketch I made, which I eventually scanned and turned into one of the pages of my coloring book. Most people don't realise this, but Mrida started not *just* because I wanted to help people find the perfect sustainable piece of art for their home, but also because I wanted to help people express themselves through colour, emotion, nature and symbolism. मैं, मृदा। I have been researching about a Collection that I will be releasing in future and it's taking ages to take shape. It's frustrating sometimes, but I know it's going to be worth all the effort in the end. Despite everything, my most favourite part of my work is when I am conceptualizing a new Collection. I have always been inclined to reading and writing and research is in my veins. I read atleast 2-3 books and several articles before I make up my mind on what I want to work on next. The techniques, design and materials to be used; everything is carefully researched and jotted down by hand in my journal (I have a habit of writing with pen and paper) before I begin to make a rough sketch of each book cover or illustration that I'll be making. And the funny thing is, the end product culminates into something very different and is never same as the concept sketch. I guess, that's why I make art...for the uncertainty of the outcome which may or maybe not be upto my expectations. The process is what makes me learn new things and grow as an artist. But I love instinctive art as much as I like to plan my artworks. I leave the instinctive ones for my personal sketchbooks and journals though! मैं, मृदा। I bring to you a colored page of my Adult Coloring book from the Nurture Collection. Last night, I couldn't fall asleep, so I decided to color one of the pages of my coloring book. I think I am going to do this for all the pages eventually because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have always loved coloring books. They give endless possibilities as to how one artwork can be recreated in your own style and medium. I have used watercolours here but these pages are suitable for all kinds of wet media. Coloring is not only therapeutic but also teaches patience and focus. It nurtures your creative mind and it's the best way to indulge in an art practice when you don't know what exactly to make. Summer is almost over and a few more days before everything looks greener outdoors. The seasons have been getting crazier over the years due to global warming. I remember having summer vacations till the end of June, when I was in school. Today, we see only 3 seasons in India. Summer, monsoon and winter, sprinkled throughout the year rather randomly. Spring and autumn have been muddled with sudden shift to the next season before we even realise it and that saddens me. I'm temporarily staying in another city till July and not at my home in Gwalior. To be honest, I am not a fan of the monsoon season. Continuous rain makes me feel dull, lethargic and gloomy. I console myself by looking at my plants in the garden thriving in the rainy season and that's my only incentive to look forward to the coming months. Now, it's time to start working on all the pre-orders from the Nurture Collection and the Kora Series. To be honest, this part where I make books of the same design in multiple numbers, is not very exciting for me. To conceptualize and bring a new Collection to life, is! The rush of creating something new is not only exciting but also fulfilling as an artist and that's the part I most look forward to. And I know, before I am done with all these pre-orders, I will already have thousands of ideas about the next Collection that I'll be dying to work on. "Kora" in hindi means "blank" and as the name suggests, these journals will feature blank covers that can be painted by you or you can also choose to get it hand-painted by me. My favourite part of these journals are their beautiful end-papers that are unique to each piece. The Kora journals are going to be available with various customizable options in size, orientation, binding and types of paper. It is going to be released on pre-orders today at 6 pm, IST (for newsletter subscribers) and for the rest at 8pm, IST! However, this shop update too will be listed on pre-orders in very limited numbers (1 in each size, orientation and binding). I will also be working on all the orders from the Nurture Collection meanwhile and orders from both the shop updates will be dispatched together next month. I like the outdoors but nothing gives me more joy than being at home with a good book and a cup of lavender tea. I think it's my go-to thing for relaxation, or even a coping mechanism to escape from the realities of life. Either ways, reading has helped me a lot when I am stressed. It not only nurtures the mind but the soul too. I always scribble little musings when I come across a good line or a character.
