Last time with some of the nursing staff and I was delighted to be invited back again to de-stress the hardworking fundraising team today. This place is amazing. Words cannot describe the magic that happens within these walls. And it is all down to the amazing, caring staff. Did you know the hospice needs a further £12,000 per day after funding to stay open? I volunteered myself for 'Da Voar Redd-up', an annual community spring clean-up around Shetland. I think I did not bad, I collected 10 bags of bruck (rubbish) and other bits, so a fair bit cleared. Go me, lol 🙋♀️ That's the beaches a bit cleaner for the Tirricks (Arctic terns) and other birds to come back to. The most annoying type of litter for me are the lumps of polystyrene that wash up from aquaculture. It blows up on to the fields and when it crumbles and breaks up scatters tiny polystyrene beads through the grass, it's impossible to clean and a hazard for the grazing sheep and there is far too much of it that washes up. 🫤 I didn't find anything particularly different or exciting, no messages in bottles, but the claw from the lobster was a fair size. Shannon wasn't feeling very well that day, so she wasn't able to help, but she did fetch the quad and trailer down so we could get the rubbish moved to the collection point. All over Shetland right now, there are piles of green Voar Redd-up bags waiting to be taken away. All collected by volunteers, individuals like myself or groups that register and sign up to take part. It's really satisfying to see the rubbish cleared up, it makes you feel good to know you've done something that matters, something that makes a difference, and helping make the environment a cleaner place. I used to want to be up there, in the sky, hanging by myself in perfect environmentalist land. It’s pretty lonely from the top, though. And I could never get there. Even when I planted all the trees, grew all the food, boycotted the supermarkets and boycotted new clothes. Even then...I still had to drive sometimes. I still needed medications in non-recyclable packaging. I still flew interstate to teach an important course. I still used electricity, and the house I lived in still had a whole bunch of embodied energy that I was responsible for. Likewise for all of my second-hand electronics. And all of my second-hand things. I don’t want to be at the top. I’ve realised that it’s better for me to fight those battles that I actually can win, and leave the very very impossibly difficult ones (you know, the ones that make you break down because you need to fly to a funeral but you said you weren’t going to fly any more) because the toll they take is too great. And the energy I’d spend on those ones, I’ll put into making the world a better place instead. So I’ll see you at the imperfect side of the scale. Cotton shirts taking 6 months, wool takes 1 year and silk takes 4 years to decompose. Natural materials, like leather and rubber can take longer; leather shoes for instance take 25+ years to decompose. Cigarette ends can take 10 years, polyester sports shirts 40 years. It's not rocket science is it. Do your bit, educate your children and pick up rubbish if you see it! As today is National Earth Day and we are trying to do our bit to make it a better place - I thought I’d reintroduce my reusable face wipes. Not only are they eco-friendly, they are beautiful, reusable (after washing), made from cotton fabric and organic bamboo which makes them extremely soft. A perfect alternative to cotton wool pads and better for the environment too. With our efforts, we can help dispose of them without any harm to the environment… We remove the coffee granules from our pods by cleaning each pod individually and recycling the pods and using the coffee granules in our gardens. . We raise funds every year in aid of @charitywater - This year we have all been baking lots of cakes to sell and selling Beetroots, sweet pea and various plants to grow on. Turning Lights off in the salon when not in use. .
