I had fantastic support from ARRI Rental while we were deciding on our equipment, especially Manfred Jahn in Munich and Christoph Hoffsten in Berlin. We didn’t want the clearest, most optically perfect lenses, so Manfred and Christoph sourced a huge range of spherical and anamorphic options to test. As soon as we saw the ALFAs, I knew we had found our lenses. The innate softness of contrast and definition, the beautiful bokeh, the marvelous flaring, and the charming astigmatism all immediately spoke to me. The @sonycine Venice Rialto was such a blessing for this project. Having dual ISO was really a lifesaver when we had to shoot slomo with the beam splitter at night . I wanted to have the rialto as a main camera to have a smaller footprint and being more stealth around children , so it’s not that overwhelming for them , we worked with @panavisionofficial G series , we also The reason is I wanted fast lenses , with closer focus and lens distorions on wider lenses ( see previous posts ). To me that is the most important idea to live by while shooting film, and furthermore, while making motion pictures. The care for detail becomes heightened; The set becomes more serious. The people creating the film feel more valuable, because not everybody can just pick up a film camera and shoot a movie. It is the true art form in cinema. ⠀ The Man Behind the Camera is a project dealing with the abuse of power specifically in the modeling industry. As we follow a model rise through the industry, we simultaneously view a photographer fall from the top leading to their collision. Given the intensity of the topic, film was the clear cut choice for this project. We needed our image to reflect the raw nature of the storyline. In addition, the photographer portrayed in our film refuses to switch over to digital cameras, so we thought we would follow suit. ⠀ The film was shot before and during the pandemic, and is finally premiering in New York this weekend. As the Director of the project, I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to share a take on such an important topic while being able to shoot on such a remarkably honest format. From art, our references were the paintings of Leon Tarasewicz and Tomasz Tatarczyk and the works of Antony Gormley. In addition, I was searching for inspiration by observing reality and trying to understand my surroundings. I also spent some time on Instagram looking for creativeness. From a young age and throughout my teenage years, I extensively trained Judo until one day I was seriously injured during a ‘fight.’ My entire upper body was covered in a plaster cast, and I only had one working arm. That was the moment, totally by coincidence, a photography camera landed in my hand. It was love at first sight, and since then, it’s never left my side. I quickly became fascinated by the power of photography and how it’s able to communicate a story to a spectator without any sound. My fascination grew into a strong passion, which led me to leave my athletic ambitions and instead pursue a career in cinematography. I applied and got accepted to the Polish Film School, which changed my life. That’s how everything started. Today, what keeps me the most inspired is a belief that in the world of countless cinematic stories, there are still chances to tell something that will move viewers in the cinema. Speaking more visually, I try to observe and find as many beautiful, interesting, and strange moments possible in my daily surroundings. At the same time, I also watch a lot of good movies and read scripts. EO offered me unbelievable artistic freedom, which I have never had before in my short professional career.
