Napoleon Dynamite Budget $400k Shoot Days 22 Location Idaho Year 2004 Shot in the town where the film takes place, Preston, ID (along with a few more places St. Anthony Sand Dunes in Idaho, Franklin, Idaho, and Richmond, Utah) in the summer July/August. Choosing Preston, Idaho, was because of Jared Hess (co-writer/director) high school connections. Hess said the town’s residents played a pivotal role : “The town just pulled out all the stops to help us make this movie” At the Sundance Film Festival, Fox Searchlight picked it up for $4 million. The film made a total of $46,118,097 at the box office - a profit of 11,400%! Fox Searchlight spent $3 million in promoting the film. The film is based on a short film Jared Hess made in 2002 with Jon Heder. Almost everything from the short made it into the feature film. Editing: The film was edited in the apartment of the producer, Jeremy Coon. They edited using a Mac for $6,000 and edited the whole film on Final Cut Pro. Cast: John Heder was paid $1k to play Napoleon Dynamite. Dance Sequence/Music: Heder said he completely free styled the iconic dance scene. It was the last thing they shot and they actually ran out of film shooting this scene. They edited together the best dance moves of the 10 minutes they shot. Props: John Heder drew all the insane drawings (except the Unicorn sketch). Extras: In the high school scenes, all the background were actual high school students at the high school. Locations: Two houses were used for the filming of Napoleon’s house, one for outdoor shots and one for indoor shots. Deb’s photo studio is the basement of the interior version of Napoleon Dynamite’s house. Animals: The llama belonged to director/co-writer Jared Hess’ mother. And… SCENE. 😭😭😭 Last night @r1vffwiz and I premiered the cut of Conditional we have been working relentlessly on for the past month. It was a culmination of all the stress and fun and terror and happy feelings that come with creating something really special. @r1vffwiz is a true artist and it was an honor to work so closely together to craft this film. It was an experience I will never forget. I am truly grateful for these past few months. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again and again. The BEST part of making art is COLLABORATION, and our crew was the literal best. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I hope to continue to collaborate with these amazing people and cannot wait to see what wonders they create.
