Wow, what a weekend! It’s been 5 years since I’ve been to a film festival and another 3 years since my work has been selected into one. I’m proud to say that’s changed. JEN was first conceived in 2021 as a feature film idea but after an opportunity had closed I was motivated to craft a treatment for the feature film and thus JEN was born. After a few hiccups along the way Shakha and I managed to finish JEN at the top of this year and we immediately hit the ground running to submit it to film festivals. Because of the hard work and talents of ALL cast and crew, JEN has been awarded with Best Heartland Narrative Short at the Kansas City Film Festival International. Heres another one I’ve been sleeping on. On my lunch break here 🙃 “Before I Go” is a short narrative film directed by @andrew_sandler and starring @veronikadash and it is set in the most cinematic places on all of earth: The American Diner. @guillermocameo DP killed it with his @arri alexa35. A camera which im still getting used to in many ways, but which here was perfectly suited to this project. So many light sources in camera and just outside the windows! As you all can see my bread and butter is Doc and branded so it’s always a pleasure to work on scripted narrative and try something different 💪 I love the colors of the diner and especially in the closeups you can see how different very subtle shades of bouncing colored light are reflecting off of the faces. As the actors lean in and out they catch different light. Reminds me of something i read with ed lachman about “Carol” he said hed do that deliberately with gels! Thats that neon palette 😍 The film is still on the festival circuit as well but @andrew_sandler kindly allowed me to share. Com Arts senior Yucheng Lian’s @lianyc_233 narrative short A Zhi will screen at the Wisconsin Film Festival on April 6! In this exquisitely staged and photographed narrative short, a young man finds himself in conflict with his father over plans to go to college. On the anniversary of his grandfather’s death, he communes with the elder’s spirit to seek advice. Influenced by filmmakers Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Yucheng hopes that the audience can really feel the place and the movement of time through his film. A Zhi was shot in Yucheng’s hometown Shantou, Guangdong, China, in July 2023, over the span of 4 days. Filming in the countryside of China was a unique experience. The crew didn’t always have permission to shoot on the streets, so they had to make a lot of last-minute decisions and adjustments to find new spots. “People would get really excited about the camera and interrupt our shooting. Our filming in a cemetery was interrupted by an elderly man who told us that everyone needed to carry a leaf from the gardenia plant to avoid being cursed. So, we bought a bag of them from the market, and everything went smoothly after that.” The lack of communication between fathers and sons is a common phenomenon for both previous and current generations. “The story comes from my personal experience with my dad. At my ancestral home's memorial, looking at the photo of my grandfather who I never met, I pondered it as a way to start an impossible conversation. The language of film is universal. My expressions are all about my images. On the eve of a traditionally family-centric holiday, we’re thinking a lot about the families who can’t be together for a cornucopia of reasons. But for Aria, the protagonist of The Bond, the stress is unimaginable. An imprisoned person, she isn’t even certain how much time she’ll have with her baby after her birth. Writer/director Jahmil Eady brings viewers along for the end of Aria’s pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Noelle, delivered while Aria is handcuffed to the hospital bed.
