"Alien" movies film scores review #1: "Alien" (1979) . Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi/horror classic deserves every accolade it's ever received. But the music in the film is a huge debate. Esteemed composer Jerry Goldsmith was brought on after a recent Oscar win for his devilish score for "The Omen." Without going into too many details (there's plenty of content online if you want to learn more) director Scott and editor Terry Rawlings famously cherry-picked and nit-picked Goldsmith's score to death. Much of the original score was trimmed, asked to be tamped down, or replaced altogether. Who was right? . Hard to argue with the final result, but I do think the choice to use previous Goldsmith music from "Freud" and scrap his end credits altogether in favor of Howard Hanson's 2nd symphony is jarring (and even a wad of spit in Goldsmith's face). His opening credits music, requested to be minimized, is something Goldsmith churned out in a matter of hours instead of days. But, having heard some of the edited original score, I can say that Jerry's incredibly talented hand was a bit heavy at times and clashed with the terror-inducing dread Scott and Rawlings were going for. . As a soundtrack album, the Goldsmith score is a bravura piece of 70s neo-classical horror. Would it have worked in the film? Maybe. I always enjoy visiting CSUF and speaking at these panels/mixers because it’s often difficult to know where or how you can get your foot in the door in the entertainment industry. I always say yes to coffee chats, zoom meetings, and speaking at events in the hopes that I can help students or individuals with their career journey. It doesn’s matter where you went to school; what goes farther than anything is perseverance. Have a dream, set goals, be productive, work hard play hard 💪🏼 I never went to a music conservatory or film school, but I made my 2 years at CSUF as a transfer student count. I made the most out of my B.A. in COMM (with a focus on the entertainment industry/music business) and never knew it would: - take me all the way to working in the music department of The Walt Disney Studios and film/television production with ABC Studios - grant opportunities to work on the sets of my favorite tv shows and IPs 🐸🐭🏰 - become the stepping stone in my music career where I’d one day produce music with other talented artists in Hollywood If someone tells you that your school is “cute but my school is better,” opportunities are out there for everybody of all educational backgrounds. Know *how* to use your resources, and network like crazy! Attend all the career panels, mixers, and resume workshops. Get involved. Just finished this book on the life of Bernard Herrmann. I really enjoyed it as it explained how advanced he was. for eg. On one of his radio melodrama broadcasts with Orson Welles, he wanted a string section to be recorded through an electronic oscillator. This was the 1940s. As well as when stereo recording was invented, he would engrave microphone placements onto the score to achieve a specific sound, like when he recorded a chior through string mic's for a very distant and eerie effect. #bernardherrmann #orsonwelles #alfredhitchcock #composer #filmcomposer #conductor

It has been an exciting year for composing music so far. “Massacre of the Mormons” has been in the top 10 on MAX for two weeks! My brother @jorsalmay delivered a great score for this docuseries, and I am honored to have composed additional music and recorded the guitar for him.
