Learn a bit about Dalia Basiouny’s journey of theatre education! Basiouny “started making theatre in 1988, during [her] undergraduate studies in the English Department at Cairo University.” Basiouny has explored many aspects of theatre. She has “hung lights, operated primitive sound and light boards, performed small roles, bought and made props, helped to build and paint sets, created pamphlets and hung flyers.” Once she graduated, “a number of [her] colleagues and [her] formed a small theatre company and [she] was an assistant director on a number of plays.” When it comes to directing, Basiouny primarily learned through reading and educating herself as well as observing any rehearsals she could attend. The majority of directors she observed were men and they often “screamed violently at their actors and assistants.” Basiouny realized that “this was not how [she] wanted to create theatre. Meet the Assistant Producer: Jemaima Mendoza Jemaima is a London based Assistant Producer working in Film & TV. Coming from an underrepresented background herself, her personal projects centre around making space for and elevating the voices of these communities. Working on ‘Washing Away’ has introduced Jemaima to a whole new community, one that has emerged through the rumbles of washing machines and tumble dryers. This community is a beautiful amalgamation of people who already have one thing in common, laundry. Jemaima has a strong belief in the power of storytelling to inspire empathy among audiences and in turn, effect positive change. She hopes this short documentary will do just that!

Meet Co-Producer/ Production Manager Laura Hounsell: Laura grew up in Dorset and is now based in London. The process of creating this documentary is showing our crew just how essential Laundrettes are to the fabric of this city. We’ve already met so many generous, hardworking laundrette owners/ staff and their communities of loyal customers and we’re only just getting started! Short documentaries can be a magical form of storytelling. They can open windows into a tapestry of lives and find magic in mundane places. This, we hope will be true of ‘Washing Away’. Laura’s favourite short documentaries are Du Côté de la Côté (Varda, 1958) and Night Mail (Watt and Wright, 1938) - masterpieces both!
Jack Harrison is the Director of Photography on #washingawaydoc and today we are celebrating him because it’s HIS BIRTHDAY! 🎈 Jack has known Sophie since the heady days of t shirt swapping socials and 3am cheesy chips, when they studied Television Production together at Bournemouth University 💃🏼 🍟🕺🏻 After being paired up in a storyboarding seminar, Sophie fell in love with Jack’s passion to tell stories through images and there cemented a lifelong professional partnership and most importantly, a friendship full of laughs, spanning 15 years.
