This Thursday’s One Work is: Chrissy Angliker, Clear Blue, 2024, Acrylic on canvas 30 x 30 inches Chrissy Angliker’s painting practice focuses on creating a balanced relationship between the controllable and uncontrollable, while visually translating her perception of herself in relation to the world. The artist’s investigation of life’s push and pull between control and chaos is depicted through intentional marks, the transitional tension between these two opposing elements representative of Angliker’s search for a sense of grace. Each Thursday, the Gallery will highlight a particular artwork we’ve been thinking about. This Thursday’s One Work is: Matthew Larson, Untitled, 2023, Milk paint on hand-carved basswood, 24.5 x 21 inches "Untitled" comes from Larson’s newest Tramp sculpture series. This series takes inspiration from “Tramp” art, a style of 19th century American folk-art and woodworking. “Tramp” art was traditionally characterized by chip or notch carving done with readily accessible tools such as penknives. Inexpensive or found wood, once carved, would then be layered into geometric shapes using nails or glue. Larson has always gravitated towards “low” materials in his practice, avoiding any pretense by deliberately using materials he considers to be cheap, mass-produced, and of little esteem. The artist plans ahead when starting work on a new project - his process no longer defined as a test or experiment. Using form, color, and composition as language, the artist’s semi-autobiographical works feature large and vivid figures that lightheartedly present complex, mysterious, and heavy narratives. Her definitively figurative work magically hovers between surrealist abstraction and narrative depiction. Johanna’s paintings explore perceptions of gender, beauty, personality, and attraction, and critique humanity’s developing reliance on these as tools of distraction from an uneventful life or grim reality. This Thursday’s One Work is: Peter Frederiksen, “Stuck, only until it’s no longer convenient.”, 2022, Freehand machine embroidery on linen, 8 x 6 inches (each panel), 8 x 12 inches (overall). Peter Frederiksen champions the art of embroidery. Throughout his exploration of the medium, the artist has developed a free-motion machine technique, commonly working on a standard sewing machine that has been altered by removing the presser foot and lowering the feed teeth, allowing Frederiksen to engage tension while moving an embroidery hoop around freely. The result is dense embroidery stitched onto linen canvas, which is then stretched onto a wooden panel as a nod to traditional painting. Lydia Baker’s practice focuses on constructive escapism, exploring and redefining modern perceptions of joy, acceptance, and home. Her drawings illustrate the passage of time in every essence. They are pictorial representations of passing seconds, changing seasons, shifting temperatures, phases of the menstrual cycle - a tribute to different ways of marking time and an exploration of the ebb and flow of balance and harmony.
