I’m not one to brag. I am a firm believer that no matter how “good” you are, there’s always something you can be better at. However, I cannot help but to be proud of myself and my body for how well I did in the CrossFit Quarterfinals workouts. In February, I was 5 months postpartum and in the middle of tax season, taking on the open workouts. A week ago, I was 7 months postpartum and recovering from tax season, completing the quarterfinal workouts. This is the heaviest I’ve lifted postpartum. I got six rope climbs in, when I didn’t even think I would get one. I didn’t give up during my least favorite movement, db box stepups. I felt strong doing my absolute favorite movement, handstand push-ups. My body is nowhere near what it was prepregnancy, but it’s a hell of a lot stronger than I gave it credit for. 2,060th in North America West and 8,288th Worldwide as of today. I know there’s way better out there, but this is damn good for me 🤩 I’m excited to keep getting stronger and I am proud to be #strongasamother 💪🏽 Thank you for the never ending support from my husband @kaleb.neptune , my friends @angelagwenny , @lisa.e.martinez , @jburnam90 and many more, friend and head coach/owner @alyson_braden @crossfitcibolo , and the amazing team @upliftptp helping me get my pelvic floor and core strength back 🫶🏽

The "lifting makes you bulky" mindset is lost on me. Give me the muscle, give me the confidence boost seeing more and more definition at every lift, give me the self confidence I feel, the self love, give me the strong as a mother mentality. I'm so darn proud of this body I built in our little garage gym and I'll take this any day over feeling weak, hating what I see in the mirror and not appreciating my body for all it does for me. It’s always been in you. You might just need somebody to give you an extra push. To breathe that belief in you that’s buried. When I started in May 2020 I was full of doubt. I had never had a good relationship with my body. I was on and off with exercise, only committing to adult rec sports that no longer fit in my schedule when I became a mom. I did one home workout and it was so awful and unenjoyable that I stopped right there. So what changed for me? Well first, I knew something had to change. I was a new mom of 2 and feeling really lost and overwhelmed. I was not overcome by the joy and aliveness that I desperately wanted as a mama. A friend invited me to do 20-30 minutes of home workouts alongside her. This invite opened the door for me to realistically incorporate self care into my life. It made fitness fun. It slowly breathed belief into me. And it connected me with a group of amazing women who helped me level up and step into my potential. Today my oldest asked me why I workout. I turned it back on him and asked him why he thinks I do. And his answer was the best. He said, “because it makes you feel happy & strong.” And then he said, “and it makes you a better a mom….but I don’t get that part because you’re already a great mom” 🥹 All of this from a simple invite. Look out world… she can throw weights around again… max 15 lbs!!! I’ll take it! It is a privilege to get to move our bodies and I am getting back into rebuilding my strength after focusing on range of motion by and mobility for the last 5 weeks! Lifting heavy makes me a much happier person! Mixing in weights with running (bootcamps) is a step in the right direction. I can’t wait to get back to where I was pre-surgery! You have to stop doing a lot of things while pregnant, but exercise isn’t one of them. For non-complicated pregnancies, exercising during pregnancy will only help you. Help you to reduce your risk of gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, And postpartum depression. Those who exercise also reduce their maternal weight gain, And are less likely to need a C-section. They can even potentially reduce the length of the 1st and 2nd stages of labor. So, how do we change exercise during pregnancy? To account for things like A growing baby bump, Extra weight on the pelvic floor, Low back or hip pain? Scaling movement patterns during strength training, By modifying exercises that require jumping Or bar contact. Decreasing load (for now!), And substituting any exercises that cause any pain or pelvic floor dysfunction. It’s easy to get frustrated because you expect exercise to look a certain way throughout your life. But pregnancy is a new game. One that’s all about about modifying, Adapting, Doing things differently. As written in my Diary on 21st June 2021: With a ten-month-old, days are pretty exhausting because most of it is spent running behind the little one who is constantly exploring. I have to always keep an eye so he does not put the wrong thing in his mouth, also now he keeps trying to walk, holding to something or the other. I have to be on my toes to catch him if he falls and not add to the meal times of the little one. Well, you can guess how my days are now! Now imagine, the only time I feel I can take some rest is when I breastfeed him; believe me, l yearns for him to ask for a feed so that I could sit down and stretch my legs in peace, or there are days when I am driven to near exhaustion, l lift my little one, announce that he might be hungry, and off I run to feed him. When I look back, months ago, when this tiny baby was on my breasts the whole-time cluster feeding, I was so exhausted that there were days I wished my husband had the breast to feed him. The thought of breastfeeding then was a nightmare. There were days I hated having him on my breasts constantly. Let’s chat about angles and how deceiving social media is. These pictures are taken from different angles, and show how most people post only what they feel looks good. No rolls, cellulite, stretch marks, extra skin, no makeup, the list goes on. But here I am in all of my rawness. Body dysmorphia is something I’ve struggled with for as long as I can truly remember. Society, and the expectations on women to look a certain way is ever changing. Thankfully, nowadays my hope is that body positivity continues to carry on for young people so they don’t grow up hating their body, and shaming themselves because of their physical appearance. Although, filters and AI are available to us at our fingertips. My hope for my children is that I teach them that they are enough, beautiful and love their bodies in whatever form it comes in. These pictures were hard for me to look at, and I even fell into old patterns of negative self talk, shame and even felt disgust. I’m working on rebuilding a new narrative, and it’s hard. This body is beautiful, and it’s given me my two greatest and most precious gifts in this life. She may not look like what she did pre-baby’s but she’s strong, beautiful, and should be proud! A perfect mother is the biggest myth It's been almost a year since I delivered my second one, but ever since it happened I have realised how I fell prey to unrealistic expectations I had from self as a mother. It's now that I have finally made peace with certain things, I have the urge to let it out. Not so long ago I was at a restaurant with my my friends. I felt completely disoriented when it came to ordering a dish for myself. That wasn't the first time it happened, such incidents have been there since last three years. Mommies would agree, things as basic as sleep, taking a shower, combing hair, having a proper meal, going to salon etcetera seem like a luxury. The "MOM BRAIN" is for real and so is "MOM GUILT". But, whenever I discussed such things with people who are from older generation would tell me may be you are overthinking or you are expecting way too much from yourself, kids will grow but you will not get this time back. It's now that I fully agree with it, I was expecting way too much from myself. I would see other millennial mothers around and want to be like them. The fear of missing out is always lurking around, all thanks to the social media we see perfection in everyone else but ourselves. As a matter of fact every mother choses to raise her kids differently and trust me all of us think we are doing something terribly wrong, but at the end of the day we are doing our best. I might not have been able to do as much for both my babies, but I can now say that I am doing the best I can. Where are all my nurse friends at?!? Or friends that work in healthcare?!? Do you feel just as burnt out as I do?! I’ve been in the healthcare scene for 14(ish) years now! 😳😳😳 If you feel burnt out, stressed, overwhelmed, overworked or a little bit of all…how are you taking care of yourself? Are you getting in any daily movement? Are you making healthier food choices? Driving through the drive through daily? Stopping for the $7 lattes for some extra caffeine? Or munching on all the snacks on the break room table? Yup I’ve been there! I should have seen the signs…it started in nursing school. As the semester progressed so did the unhealthy habits. I gained 15+ pounds my first rodeo through nursing school. I felt it took a while to lose the weight because then working in the field…my unhealthy habits continued. I was working extra hours/double shifts and my sleep was complete shit! I even resorted at looking at diet pills to try to lose the weight. I wanted a “quick fix.” Fast forward 5 years, I went back to nursing school to advance my degree, I had just had my second kiddo and had lost the weight and was so scared to gain any amount of weight. I was already in a yo-yo stage of eating minimal, running miles and then binging. I didn’t have a healthy relationship with food. Thats the year I found this amazing at home workout routine and an easy to follow nutrition plan! I began to learn how to have a healthy fitness routine & began learning how to have a healthy relationship with food, learn how to not binge and not punish myself with all that cardio! Here I am 8 years later, I am still a burnt out nurse but I have learn how to keep my daily habits I check. I look forward to my workout (it helps keep me sane) & my relationship with food is good!
