Growing up my family and I were down at Prince Kuhio Park almost every Saturday as far back as I can remember. My dad and Grandmpa are members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha. Among other duties they act as the caretakers for the birth place of Prince Jonah Kuhio. Years later my Dad asked if I could help them with a project. This project wasn’t about creating a new design, but to revive a design that was pulled from old documents. Born on the Island of Kauaʻi in 1871, Prince Kūhiō was the youngest of three sons and the last heir of the Hawaiian monarchy. He was elected to congress in 1902, and served a total of ten two-year terms. During this time, he established the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. He was beloved by his people, and was hailed as Ke Aliʻi Makaʻāinana – The Citizen Prince. His birthplace is located on Lawai Rd. down in Poʻipu. A monument is there in his honor, and visitors can walk the grounds to pay their respects and see the remains of the surrounding heiau. Prince Kūhiō was born on March 26, 1871 in Kōloa, Kauaʻi and was hānai (adopted) at a young age by his aunt and uncle, Queen Kapʻiolani and King David Kalākaua. By the age of 13, he was given the title of Prince. In 1902, Prince Kūhiō joined the Republican Party, serving as a non-voting delegate from Hawaiʻi to the House of Representatives in Congress. Kūhiō became the only member of Congress born into royalty, and he held this position until his death in 1922. Prince Kūhiō accomplished many things including introducing the Hawaiʻi Statehood Act in 1919 and the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, as well as, founded the Hawaiian Civic Club in 1918 and re-organized the Royal Order of Kamehameha I. He also established the Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse, the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, and the building of a hospital in Kalaupapa on Molokaʻi. He was an impactful delegate to the U.S. Congress who contributed to the major progression of native Hawaiian advancement. This includes founding the first Hawaiian Civic Club, facilitating the passing of the women’s suffrage bill, and helping introduce the first Hawai‘i Statehood Act, spearheading the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act which dedicated areas of Hawaiian land to natives, and much more. “The only method to rehabilitate the race is to place them back upon the soil." Prince Kūhiō Today's day off is brought to you by this handsome Hawaiian - Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole Pi'ikoi! Taking his name from his grandfathers, the High Chiefs of Hilo and Kauai, then later adopted by Queen Kapi'olani after his parents died, Kūhiō became a prince under the House of Kalakaua. A smiling child, he was nicknamed "Prince Cupid" by his elementary school teachers. He was schooled in California and England, bringing the art of surfing to both places. He was present in Hawaii during the overthrow of 1893, served a stint in prison for taking part in the Wilcox Rebellion, then traveled the world with his wife until his return in 1901. He got involved in politics and was elected to Congress in 1903 where he served until his death in 1922. During his tenure, he was responsible for instituting a local county government system within the islands that's still used today, he lobbied for women's suffrage and helped enact the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, which is when he said the above quote. Give thanks to the smiling Hawaiian Prince for his role in our history as we take the day off in his honor. Hau‘oli lā Hānau (Happy Birthday) to Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole! Today, the 26th day of March, is the Kūhiō Day State Holiday, when we observe and honor this Prince and his many accomplishments in service to his people and the Hawaiian Islands. Born in the Kōloa District of Kaua‘i, Kūhiō was named prince of the Hawaiian Kingdom by Royal proclamation at age 13. Following the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom Government in 1893, Kūhiō was arrested and imprisoned for a year for participating in the armed resistance known as the Kaua Kūloko. He later served as a Hawaiian delegate to the U.S. Congress for nearly 20 years before passing in 1922 at the age of 50. The father of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, he is also recognized for many accomplishments such as: introducing surfing to the United States with his brothers, helping establish numerous parks around the islands, advocating for women’s suffrage, forming the Hawaiian Civic Clubs, implementing our current county system of government, and mastering lua (Hawaiian martial arts). In addition to today's holiday honoring the Prince, one of the most famous beaches in the world is named after him. Transferred to City jurisdiction in March 1936, the 3.4-acre Kūhiō Beach Park is one of the most iconic stretches of shoreline, located in illustrious Waikīkī. While there, you can also visit the statue of Prince Kūhiō on the ocean-side (makai-side) of Kalākaua Avenue between ʻŌhua and Kealohilani avenues. Make sure to leave a lei to show your appreciation! On this day in history: On March 26th, 1871, Prince Jonah Kuhio was born. Prince Kuhio served as a Republican delegate in the United States Congress from March 4th, 1903 until his death in 1922. During his political career he advocated for women's right to vote, instituted local government at the county level, was the founder of the first Hawaiian Civic Club, and in 1919 he introduced the first Hawai'i Statehood Act to Congress (it would be 40 years later that Hawai'i became a state). Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was committed to improving the lives on the Hawaiian people, which led him to become a politician and he served as a delegate to the United States Congress. Prince Kuhio introduced the bill that gave Hawaii full-fledged statehood in 1919, as well as the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which set aside 200,000 acres of land for homes for native Hawaiian families across the state. . A variety of events are organized across the state to celebrate Prince Kuhio Day. Our Oahu employees attended the 5th annual Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Festival at Kalanianaole Beach Park (formerly Nanakuli Beach Park) during this past Saturday, March 23, 2024. They provided energy-saving tips to the community.
