Braver then 3 months ago that’s for sure. Taking up major space and being present. Sitting in circles with people who genuinely want to see people thrive. Connecting with those who work on their own inner battles, shit shows, limiting beliefs, trauma-drama, and beyond. Seeing my reflection so I can reflect on the life I was given. Their is no faking it till we make it type of vibes welcomed around me…it’s raw, it’s real, it’s loyal. As I sat in a circle of powerful leaders we were asked to look at the trees around us and take note to what the trees teach us. So many lessons and aha’s I couldn’t help but be in deep connection and communication with nature. This day solidified that I have not just arrived but I am ALIVE. The day before this I sat in a building pounding fist to fist with another Aloha ‘Āina warrior we looked at each other and connected to know we are our ancestors and we have work to do for our future generations to come. As we left the valley on Sunday the whole team could of not have known that same warrior was going to a different valley that day and took my sister with him. This is how it works. CommUNITY you may not always see us together but we are always connected and doing our thing. This picture just reminded me that even when I think others are not watching me they are and I have a duty to make sure to show up for people in my way. Today one realization is for sure “you do not have to be 50% to be Hawaiian, or go to Hawaiian immersion to be Hawaiian, or speak fluently Hawaiian to Hawaiian” you need to to show up as you and as a Hawaiian ask what is my contribution and responsibility to myself, my people, our Hawaii, and the future generations and then move into that more and more. I am proud to be The Hawaiian That I Am and you’ll never find another Hawaiian like me and that’s my super power be your own best version of self😉. Today we honor our queen for her birthday, but everyday we should be honoring her for all that she’s done for us Kānaka Maoli and Hawaiians…as well as all she has instilled in all of us. The sacrifices she made to ensure that we the people of Hawai’i are still here till this day and she is the reason why we weren’t completely eradicated by the American colonizers. But though it’s her birthday, I find it hard to celebrate, as we’re still illegally occupied since Jan.17th 1893 and many have forgotten that our Hawaiian Kingdom still exist…but it’s our kuleana to restore it and continue all that our queen has bestowed upon us. She may not be here physically, but spiritually she still is and she lives amongst all that is Kānaka and those that have the love for Hawai’i, our people and our culture. Many of us have been experiencing guilt or shame for continuing your business and/or buying things knowing that people of Maui have nothing but the clothes on their backs. I find myself staying away from buying things that are not necessities because i wanna be able to give as much as i can, when i can. Im fortunate that my bills are paid, we have a roof over our heads, warm in bed, and food on our table. I been feeling super down on myself because i cant do more but i know my kuleana right now is here with my son and supporting from afar. I continue to keep everyone affected with this tragedy in my thoughts and prayers. I will continue to give how much i can, when i can and share with others. I also understand that MANY people depend on their businesses so please continue to support your local businesses that you normally support. From what i been seeing, most local businesses are giving 100% of proceedings to help Maui. @oilyainaessentials will use all money fundraised towards the essentials for the keiki AND towards clean water filtration stations on Maui. I dont think anyone should be shamed for continuing their business because again, some families depend on that business to eat and feed their own keiki. We can help Maui as much as we want but dont forget yourselves and your own ʻohana. *HAPPY AAPI MONTH!* What an honor & privilege it is to be a part of two diverse & creative communities- the AAPI community, and the Disney community. It's amazing to have a place like @disneyaapicreators to share our culture & creativity. I'm Redina, but everyone calls me 'Red'. At home I'm 'Mom' or 'Nana', 'Dina' or 'Tita' (Hawaiian slang for 'sister'). Both my parents were Hawaiian, my father's side is from the island of O'ahu, and my mom's from Maui. They grew up together in Nanakuli on O'ahu. My parents moved to CA, where my 5 siblings and I were raised. I've lived in Hawai'i a few times, but CA is where I've lived most my life. I have 2 kids, a DIL, and 3 grandkids. As a Hawaiian raised in CA, my parents made sure we knew our culture by teaching us our heritage, especially through food, dance and language. We grew up speaking pidgin english in our home, and some Hawaiian words. We learned the legends and stories told of the gods and traditions of our lands. We learned hula, Tahitian, Maori & Samoan dances, as well as how to make our own clothing and instruments when we performed these dances. As a creative in the Disney community, I hope to share how important it is to honor the traditions of the Hawaiian and Polynesian people. I love seeing representation, but understanding the culture & protecting it in this community allows us to share it more accurately with others. As Hawaiians, we live ALOHA, meaning we love people and we love our land and we believe faith goes a long way. It's important for us to take care of our elderly and our children, because they are the past and future of who we are. We honor the traditions of our ancestors in these modern times and we understand it is our responsibility to protect our culture for future generations. I love being Hawaiian - I am proud of where I came from, and want to share it with you! Mahalo to @disneyaapicreators for being the magic we all need! May is Asian American Pacific Island Heritage month! I struggled a lot growing up with finding belonging in the Hawaiian community, feeling like I wasn’t enough. It wasn’t until I became an adult that I really started appreciating and being proud to be Native Hawaiian. I wasn’t born there, I never lived there, but I’m trying to find my place. So grateful for all the beautiful souls I encountered throughout the week of free concerts, markets, Peggy’s 🤪, the Edith Kanaka’ole stadium. Everyone looked divine and regal.
