Historically the niches of the Cathedral would have been inhabited by sculptures of saints. Here we are invited to consider who are the ‘saints’ / our ‘saints’ – Though the sculptures are apparently not of named individuals, the strong features and character are a strong contrast to the mostly featureless figures named on graves and memorials and you can’t help be read then as intriguing individuals - and wonder what their story is. These were largely destroyed in the Reformation that took place in the reign of King Henry VIII with another go at iconoclasm carried out by Cromwell’s Protestant henchmen. Some of the resulting empty spaces around the cathedral have been temporarily filled with sculptures by Sean Henry. Just as the absent figures of saints would have been polychrome, so too are his bronze figures painted. But these do not depict saintly or supernatural beings, but instead what might be considered ‘Everyman’ (or Everywoman). Wearing suits, jeans and leggings, his figures look like the people we might encounter in the streets outside. Sean Henry’s ‘Rowers’ sculpture depicts the great Olympic duo, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. This sculpture, one of an edition of five, is a smaller version of the original larger than life size sculpture outside the River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames. Kindred Souls - At The Edge of The Ocean An Art Upon Art Series - a recorded moment of encounter with another artist’s creation. Well, this is such a popular sculpture on the beach – everybody wants to sit for a photo with The Seated Man by Sean Henry. And it is photogenic – I have taken several shots in the morning, afternoon and sunset but none worked for me – I gave up, the sun went down, and I wandered around. Just as I was thinking of leaving, I thought I would try one last time to see if I can frame the half-moon in the shot, so I went for a low angle composition and took a few long exposures. Hardly anybody was around by that time... ... and then this lovely older couple walked up and the elderly man with a walking stick seated himself besides, I’m gonna call him Henry – the sculpture that is, as his, I presume, wife took some photos. The man looked so pleased like he is meeting a long-lost friend. I continued taking long exposures from my spot from one low corner. Later another lady offered to take a photo of them – and this is the result - a 25-second-long exposure of the two of them, arms wrapped around Henry. This encounter lasted for a few minutes and during that time while the camera was taking long exposures, I really felt a precious moment of connection with the moon and stars shining, the ocean lapping and the unspoken gentle happiness the man felt sitting there with The Seated Man.
