Postwar Sicily would produce some of the noblest men to walk the earth. It would also produce some of the most evil to ever have blighted it. Ask an Italian of the latter, and few would dispute the inclusion of Salvatore 'Totò' Riina, the most violent, unstable and sociopathic boss in the history of the Sicilian Mafia. The second of six sons, Riina was born in 1930 amid a generation of Corleonesi who would terrorise the island of Sicily for the rest of the 20th century, and depart this life having taken life from so many others. Losing his father and brother to a freak accident with ordnance fired from American artillery during the invasion of Sicily, Riina was forced to abandon school and seek work at just 13. His father's funeral indeed was said to be the last time he was seen to weep. With his mother struggling to raise her surviving sons alone, pressure saw Riina succumb to the allure of the returns promised by crime. Thus would Riina fall into the employ of the Mafioso Luciano Leggio, where alongside his no less psychotic compatriot, Bernardo Provenzano, he rapidly earned a reputation for his ease with blood. On the 10th March 1948, his dark path was consecrated by his murder of the trade unionist Placido Rizzotto, on account of the latter's campaign for land reform. Within months, he had killed again, his tendency to view the slightest perceived affront as unforgivable and eruptive temper being the death of countless others to come. In 1949, aged just nineteen, Riina was sentenced to 16 years in prison for homicide and illegal firearm possession. Despite incarceration only worsening his psychosis, Riina was released after just six years, and immediately returned to Corleone and the way of crime. Together with Provenzano, Riina would leave a trail of death across inland Sicily following the eruption of the Mafia War in 1958 despite multiple encounters with the law, hamstrung as it was by the infiltration of the Palermo government by the Corleonesi. Riina in particular would be feared for his enthusiasm for abducting enemies and striking their families, and breaking an old taboo in the Mafia - that of targeting law enforcement, and the general public...

#bagheria #baaria #baarìa #villapalagonia #sizilien #sicily #sicilia #palermo #villadeimostri #travelsicily #exploresicily #sizilienreise #villa #travelitaly #italia #italy #italy_vacations #italytrip #ig_sicily #ig_sicilia #sicilianhistory #historyofsicily #legends

#bagheria #baaria #baarìa #villapalagonia #sizilien #sicily #sicilia #palermo #villadeimostri #travelsicily #exploresicily #sizilienreise #villa #travelitaly #italia #italy #italy_vacations #italytrip #ig_sicily #ig_sicilia #sicilianhistory #siciliastorica

~The many faces of the Goddess~ The island of Mozia is an ancient Phoenician colony on the island of San Pantaleo in the Stagnone Nature Reserve of Marsala in Sicily, and is among the most important archaeological sites in the world. Recently on the island the “bright” face of the goddess Astarte, the Lady of life, was discovered. Astarte was the goddess of reproduction, love, but also of navigation, fresh water and sea. She is definitely a “goddess of many faces”. Known as Inanna by the Sumerians, Isthar by the Akkadians, the Assyrians and Babylonians, Hathor and Isis for the Egyptians, Astarte by the Phoenicians, Aphrodite but also Hera and, in some cases Demeter, by the Greeks. As You see the Goddess has been called in many ways throughout history, even though the spirit was the same and transcended any name. #casachora #mediterraneo #motzia #thegoddess #sicilianhistory #newnarrative #goddes #mediterraneanwomen

Book review of The Sicilian Inheritance by @jopiazzaauthor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is a beautiful ode to Sicily. The fabulous plot - switching between the lives of Sara and her great grandmother Serafina alone make for a fabulous read, but in addition you have layers of history from a female perspective, medicine, mythology, a travelogue and a mouthwatering food journal to enjoy. Think tiramisu in book form. And it certainly did pick me up, I want to book a trip to Italy right now! Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers Bolinda Audio, and the author Jo Piazza, for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my personal, honest review. And of course thank you so much to the wonderful @harpercollinsuk who you may recall sent me an uncorrected proof which frankly I will treasure ❤️ #thesicilianinheritance #jopiazzaauthor #jopiazza #italiandynasty #italianhistory #booksaboutitaly #bookssetinitaly #italianfood #italianculture #booksaboutmythology #sicilianhistory #sicilianmythology #fivestarread #highlyrecommendedbook #mustreadbook #mustread2024 #netgalleyreads #netgalleyreviewer #booksaboutfriendship #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutwomen #booksaboutwitches #booksaboutwomeninhistory #booksaboutwomenshealth #booksaboutwomensrights #bookreviewer #bookreviewersofinstagram #booksmatter #readingmatters #notquiteabookshop

The life of the charismatic young Corleonesi politician, Bernardino Verro, would encapsulate the tragedy of Sicily post-Unification, and precipitate Corleone's rapid descend into the infamy that would define her for much of the 20th century. Having allied himself with the then still relatively benign Fratuzzi Mafia clan in 1893, seeing in them a powerful force which could be welded to the socialist cause by coercing landowners into concessions, Verro's naieveté would ultimately cost him his life, and establish a precedent that haunted Corleone for a century. The Mafia, after all, was a third pillar of the Italian state, along with the political classes in Rome and the island's powerful tycoons, and played both off against each other to advance her own interests. Within months of his initiation into the Fratuzzi, Verro learned to his fury that Mafiosi had been undermining his strikes, providing tools to agricultural workers to permit them to continue working. Worse, in 1894, Prime Minister Francesco Crispi unleashed an exceptionally violent crackdown upon the Sicilian trade unions, or Fasci. Verro, as one of the highest profile members, was arrested and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Only widespread condemnation of the extreme brutality with which the central government restored order would see his sentenced commuted. In 1899, Verro formed an unusually extensive consumers' co-operative in Corleone, which, involving some 800 families, permitted the Corleonesi to purchase primary goods at prices far lower than what the corrupt gabelloti, or estate managers, were asking. While a huge success in the city, powerful forces were now turning against him. The final act would come when, after riding a wave of indignation against the city government, Verro was elected the first socialist mayor of Corleone in 1914, after publicly denouncing his former allies in the Fratuzzi. Thus in his moment of victory, he sealed his doom. On the 3rd November 1915, Mayor Bernardino Verro was shot dead as he left the town hall, becoming one of the first high profile serving public officials in Sicily to be murdered by the Sicilian Mafia. Tragically, a great many more would join him.

For King Ferdinand of Bourbon, the Napoleonic Wars and exile to Sicily would blur the lines between friend and foe. For while France would occupy Naples by force, by 1812 the British would occupy Sicily by coercion, leveraging their 'protection' of the island to demand ever more exorbitant political reforms. The situation had come to a particularly acrimonious head with the appointment a year earlier of Lieutenant General Lord William Bentinck as commander of British forces in Sicily, an idealist who soon exceeded his mandate from London and saw it as his mission to 'enlighten' the island. In practice, this meant the aggressive lobbying of Sicilian lords, behind the King's back, to urge the adoption of a new constitution for the island. Ferdinand grew increasingly angered, but powerless too to act, for fear of the navy withdrawing and leaving Sicily wide open to the French. Yet in 1812, the red line was crossed when Bentinck demanded the King approve the sweeping constitution, which disregarded centuries of Sicilian customs and sensibilities in favour of a Westminster style government. The move triggered a serious rift in the Royal Family, with Prince Francesco arguing they could ill afford to lose British support. The King however was enraged at Bentinck's conduct, flatly refusing to sign away the sovereignty of his kingdom. Following heated discussions however, a face-saving agreement was met, by which the King, citing illness, withdrew to the Hunting Lodge at Ficuzza, delegating constitutional authority to Francesco, who then would seek reconciliation with Bentinck. Thus would Ferdinand spend many a tormented month amid the forests of Ficuzza, before the dramatic downfall of Napoleon in 1814 would permit his return to power, and to Naples at last after eight long years of occupation. Ficuzza, the sanctuary of the King, would thus fall into obscurity once more over the course of the 19th century, and into indignity in the 20th, when the complex was ransacked by Allied troops during the invasion of Sicily in 1943. Many of her precious furnishings were never recovered, and today she stands, in stripped silence, a monument to the grander days of Corleone...

The War of the Sicilian Vespers, a conflict from 1282 to 1302, was a rebellion against the Angevin (really French) rule on the island of Sicily. The image shows a map detailing the Angevin campaigns in Sicily during the years 1298 to 1302. The war began with the Sicilian Vespers uprising, where the Sicilians revolted against the oppressive rule of Charles I of Anjou. It became a war involving multiple Mediterranean powers, including the Aragonese, who were invited to rule over Sicily and clashed with Angevin forces. The pope would even sanction a crusade against the Aragonese, showing how corrupted the French controlled papacy had become. The Vespers effectively ended the Angevin presence in Sicily, setting the stage for Aragonese primacy in the western Mediterranean for two centuries. #WarOfSicilianVespers #SicilianHistory #MedievalWars #SicilianRebellion #AragoneseDynasty #EuropeanHistory #MediterraneanHistory #MilitaryStrategy #13thCentury #HistoricalMaps #HistoricalConflicts #Maps #Sicily

Tour of Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone 🍋 Any excursion to discover two Sicilian jewels ✨ The tour offers the opportunity to explore two splendid towns, a representation of the vast artistic and architectural heritage of Sicily. The tour starts in Piazza Armerina at “Villa del Casale,” a stunning palace built between the third and sixth century BC. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and it is one of the most spectacular sites of its kind. It mimics the perfect combination of the architectural and decorative elements of a typical Roman Forum. After lunch, the tour continues in the ancient town of Caltagirone. You can visit the impressive Santa Maria del Monte stairs, consisting of 142 majolica-adorned steps, also used as an accessible path to reach the upper and lower parts of the town. #caltagirone #sicilia #baroque #ceramica #testadimoro #unescoworldheritage #villaromanacasale #unescoworldheritage #mosaici #sicilianhistory #piazzaarmerinabarocca

I did something with Jo Piazza’s “The Sicilian Inheritance” that I rarely do for a digital book: I read it one weekend. My first inclination is to call it a mystery, but it really is so much more: it’s historical, it’s women’s fiction, it’s a romance, it’s about self-discovery and change, there’s some food and wine, and, of course, it’s definitely a book with a great sense of place. In fact, this is one I would highly recommend for anyone interested in Sicily. I lived in Sicily for two years—many years ago—and I found myself both identifying with certain parts in the book (nodding my head because something was described exactly as I remembered it) and being surprised because I learned something new and fascinating about this island. And it was just a good story—interesting characters, an enticing mystery, and a powerful story about women. Told in dual timelines, “The Sicliian Inheritance” tells the story of American chef Sara Marsala who has lost her business, her marriage, and her beloved great-Aunt Rosie who travels to Sicily to hopefully cash in on some family land. It’s also the story of Sara’s great-grandmother, Serafina, a Sicilian woman in the 1900s dealing with an absent husband, young children, a loss of her dreams, and a reputation as a witch. When she arrives in Sicily, Sara realizes there is much more to her great-grandmother’s story than just a piece of land...Sara needs to figure out who is responsible for Serafina’s death. (The mob? The absent husband? The bitter best friend? The traditional townspeople against the “witch”?) It was a quick enticing read with a great sense of place. Fantastico. *I was given a version of this book for free in exchange for an honest book review—thank you to @netgalley and @duttonbooks. #thesicilianinheritance #visitsicily #jopiazza @jopiazzaauthor #bookreview #netgalley #sicilianhistory #historicalfiction #historicalmystery #learnaboutsicily #italy #sicily #bookssetinitaly #italia #weekendread #sicilia

Over the course of little more than an hour that moody December day in 2020, as I travelled near alone on a Sicilian coach, masked as was compulsory in such days, I found myself entranced by the almost ethereal beauty of the road from Palermo to Corleone. The foothills of the Sicanian mountains are a painting indeed, from the great forest of Ficuzza, once the favoured hunting grounds of the Bourbon kings, to the green plains and broken cliffs that embrace Corleone herself. Were it not for the events of recent decades, notoriety is the last quality one would associate with such a place. Yet while the name of Corleone will inevitably be synonymous with the darkest era of the Sicilian Mafia for many long years to come, such infamy is but the tail end of a long history that mirrors that of Sicily herself. Man indeed has dwelled here since at least Elymian times, when the city of Schera was founded. Certainly that presence was an urban one as early as the 6th century BC, at the height of the Greek colonisation of Eastern Sicily and their struggles with the Phoenicians in the West, with this part of the interior being something of an uneasy buffer between the two. How her now iconic name first came into being is, like all names of such Antiquity, endlessly disputed. One popular theory is that it derives from the Byzantine Greek χώραλέων, meaning 'land of the Lion' - a compelling root when the heraldic emblem of Corleone today is indeed a lion rampant. This may then have been adapted rather than discarded by the Arab conquerors of Sicily in the 9th century, when the Aghlabids referred to Corleone as 'Qurliyùn'. The centuries of Christian rule to follow, from the Normans through the Catalan Aragonese, Spanish and eventually Italians, would see the 're-Latinised' name evolve from 'Curilionum' to 'Coriglione' to 'Corleone', which made its first recorded appearance in 1556, at the dawn of the Spanish Viceroyalty. Set at the heart of highly fertile land, controlling the central crossroads of the Sicilian West, however, this was far too important a town strategically for her to fall into anonymity, and virtually all the Kings of Sicily would have business in Corleone...

A Brief overview of olive oil in Sicily   For many thousands of years, the olive tree has been cultivated in Sicily, forming a fundamental part of the landscape and its history. Believed to have been brought to the island by the Phoenicians and Myceneans, the Greeks of Sicily (as we can perhaps call them) gave the hugest importance to the olive tree so even uprooting a single tree suffered the penalty of exile. As times evolved and Sicily came under Roman and then Arab rule, cultivation of the olive tree was neglected in favour of other species, in particular citrus.   It was only during the 15th and 16th centuries that the olive tree really started to find its feet in the Sicilian landscape. Improvements in cultivation and production were introduced thanks to the Benedictine and Cistercian monks, who spread the knowledge of olive mills (frantoi) and from here the importance of olive oil began to take economic, cultural and religious significance.   Considered a symbol of peace and fertility, across many cultures: I’m referring to Noah, to doves carrying olive branches, to the chrism, to Homer, to graffiti, frescoes, Egyptian tombs, Arabic texts and the list continues, Olive Oil has a place in the history of Sicily that is irreplaceable. The magical Saracen olive tree has overflown into the Sicilian culture, influencing writers from Pirandello to Camilleri to Quasimodo. But olive oil production in Sicily today has its eyes very much on the future – the best frantoiani invest heavily in research and technology to advance their knowledge and ability to cultivate the best quality olives and extract the best oil. With a rich and complex terroir ranging from the high altitude volcanic slopes of Etna to the sandy soils of the southern coast, Sicily has much to offer and much to explore.   Take a journey, an ethno-anthropological and sensory journey. Taste the most wonderful extra virgin olive oil from Sicily you can get your hands on, and taste history.   #sicilia #sicilianhistory #gastronomichistory #foodstories #sicilianoliveoil #extravirginoliveoil #evoo #provenance #regionalfood #distinctlysicilian @frantoi_cutrera #frantoi

Discover the fascinating story of San Corrado Confalonieri, the patron saint of Noto, Sicily. Also known as San Conrado de Piacenza, he was born in the 14th century in Italy, dedicating his life to piety and charity. "Fata Morgana" is the Italian translation of "Morgan le Fay"; in Italy, a "Fata Morgana" is a mirage visible above the horizon. These mirages are often seen in the Italian Strait of Messina, and are described as fairy castles in the air or false land conjured by magic. There is a reason why this optical illusion has this particular name. Legend has it that Morgan le Fay established her home in Sicily and had her crystal castle built under the waters of the Strait of Messina. Roger I of Sicily (Jarl Rogierr, a Norman nobleman) during one of his battles against the Arabs, met the Morgan le Fay who told him that she would help him defeat the Arabs if he did not pray the Virgin Mary. But Roger instead chased her away. There are also other legends linked to Morgan le Fay and which concern her half-brother King Arthur. King Arthur wanted to weld his sword Excalibur, that had been broken in battle, in the fire forges of Mount Etna, but he fell in love with that wonderful land so much that he had his palace built there. There is also a legend that says King Arthur is buried under Mount Etna. But how comes that there are legends of Morgan Le Fay and King Arthur in Sicily? The Normans conquered Sicily in 1061 and their culture greatly influenced the local culture. The Normans shortly afterwards (1066) conquered also England; it was precisely in this period that the legends deriving from the Breton Arthurian cycle began to be known in Sicily. #fatamorgana #morganlefay #kingarthur #sicily #sicilianlegend #sicilianlegends #straitofmessina #etna #mirage #mountetna #opticalillusion #southernitaly #fairy #normans #sicilianhistory #sicilianculture #italia #italy #italianfolklore #italiantradition #italiantraditions #italianfolktraditions #italianfolktradition #italianfolkheritage #italianheritage #italianculture #italianfolkhistory #italianhistory #folklore #folkheritage

The Italy of the postwar era is generally considered a period of optimism and economic boom, albeit one shadowed by significant depopulation of the South at the expense of the North, and highly questionable interference by the great powers of the Cold War. In Palermo however, the reality of the new regime would become egregiously apparent in the space of less than a generation. The first, dire, warning shot of what was to come would be fired on the 28th November 1959, with an act of grotesque cultural vandalism. It was in that year that Mayor of Palermo Salvo Lima, and the infamously corrupt Assessor of Public Works Vito Ciancimino, approved a new regulatory urban plan for the Sicilian capital, paving the way for development on an enormous scale to the immediate northwest of the historic centre - precisely where many of the city's famed Liberty-era villas stood. One such edifice was the beautiful Villa Deliella, residence of the Princes of Deliella, constructed by the great Belle Epoque architect Ernesto Basile. As 1960 approached, the Villa, completed in 1909, would soon fall under the law of protection of cultural heritage, applying to all notable architecture at least 50 years old. As a result, on the morning 28th November, in immensely suspicious circumstances, the Palermo council rushed through an approval for its demolition. In an extraordinary display of apparent 'efficiency', teams arrived on site *the same afternoon*, pickaxes ready. Within a couple of days, before the general public could adequately mobilise, and potentially delay works until 1960, the Villa was unceremoniously razed to the ground, its beautiful furnishings and majolica tiles simply vanishing or else ending up in the city flea markets. By December, Palermitans were horrified at the open wound inflicted on the city, but the deed was done - the Council now had its space for redevelopment. In a perversely irony however, the expected construction licenses were never issued, leaving a gaping hole in the urban fabric which persists today, occasionally used as a car park. Unfortunately for the Sicilian capital, the worst was yet to come. The Sack of Palermo had begun...

via Shady Ladies/ Andrew Lear @shadyladiestours Hellenistic terracota figurine of Skylla from the 3rd or 2nd century BCE, found in Sicily. The items she holds are broken so what they were is uncertain, but in similar Etruscan portraits she holds two anchors, oars, or rudders as weapons, evidently collected from ships broken on her rocks. She sits astride a cone of waves, emerging from the sea. Her womanly half is beautiful, with a very lovely face and pleasing expression. She wears a girdle/belt with extension that lends modesty to her appearance. For Homer, she was very monstrous during her encounter with Odysseus. She had twelve dragon tails and dog heads issuing from her waist, a crab shell on her back, and several long-necked heads, veru distant from the two-tail mermaid. This Beautiful Skylla is the kindlier version who was a goddess to the Etruscans. She protected the dead lost at sea and served the dead by leading them into the afterlife. Her cult evidently lingered in Sicily. #scylla #scyllaandcharybdis #femmefatale #mythology #nymphs #seanymph #goddesses #monsters #classicalart #sicilianhistory #paganism #titans #oldgods #primordialbeings #archaicgreece #ancienthistory #daimones #mermaid #siren #seamonster

#ᴀɪᴀʀᴛᴡᴏʀᴋ #bestaiart #catholichistory #christianhistory #epichistory #grandemadre #historylove #historylovers #historyloversclub #historyofreligions #igers_messina #madonnadellalettera #madredidio #messina #messinanobilissima #repubblicamarinara #repubblichemarinare #sicilianhistory #storiadellereligioni #storiasiciliana Illustrazione creata con @getremixai [MixerXL, Lifestyle, Soft]. I Vespri Siciliani (1864) is a very important work by the Sicilian 19th century artist Michele Rapisardi. The painting represents the scene in which a French soldier offends a Palermitan woman, thus causing a popular revenge, the people's revolt known as "I Vespri Siciliani," which brought to an end the Angioin domination in 1282. The painting is housed in Castello Ursino (Catania) and it is a must see of our Sicily Art Tour. Photo number 1 is a study for the major painting, also on display. #aiartistscommunity #ᴀɪᴀʀᴛᴡᴏʀᴋ #architecturalhistory #bestaiart #duomodimessina #duomomessina #historylove #historylovers #historyloversclub #historyofarchitecture #igersmessina #medievalhistory #messina #messinabedda #messinanobilissima #santamarialanova #sicilianhistory #storiadellarchitettura #storiadellartemedievale #storiamedievale #storiasiciliana Illustrazione creata con @getremixai [MixerXL, Documentary, Hard]. When Mayor of Piana dei Greci, Don Ciccio Cuccia, foolishly insulted Benito Mussolini to his face during the latter's visit in May 1924, little did he know the world of pain that was coming, as Fascist Italy, now with a personal as well as political mandate, came down upon the Sicilian Mafia like a ton of bricks. The enraged Mussolini at once mobilised the machinery of the fledgling dictatorship, blowing away decades of indifference and collusion of Rome towards the world's most infamous criminal organisation. Indeed on the 13th May 1924, a single day after returning from Sicily, the Duce summoned the Chief of the State Police, Emilio De Bono, along with Interior Minister Luigi Federzona. The result of this fateful meeting was the appointment of the iron fist of the regime that would be thrown at the Mafia, in the form of that most ruthless of weapons, a remorseless bureaucrat with no tolerance for lawlessness, and a religious devotion to duty that transcended party loyalty - Cesare Mori, the man soon to be feared as the 'Prefetto di ferro', or 'Iron Prefect'. Mussolini appointed the Pavia-born Mori, who had cut his teeth cracking down on anarchists and republicans agitators, to the post of Prefect of Trapani. It was no small irony that Mori had himself previously caused trouble for Fascist blackshirt squads while Prefect of Bologna, yet such was the situation that Mussolini valued competence above ideology, and indeed the new Prefect would make his mark with extraordinary efficiency. Within weeks of his appointment, Mori would secure the arrest of Don Cuccia, along with 53 other Mafiosi, sending the former to prison from which he would not emerge for 11 years. For his ruthless interception of banditry and relentless pursuit of the roots of crime, deploying agents loyal directly to him, Mori earned Mussolini's respect, and promotion to the post of Prefect of Palermo on the 12th October 1925. By the year's end, over two hundred further arrests had been made, and Mori introduced to Sicily a powerful new tool of state - photographic ID, the possession of which entered law on the 1st January 1926. The Mafia, used to operating with impunity, was reeling...

One of my favorite things about travel - admiring all the different types of architecture all around the world! Palermo, Sicily was especially amazing for this as it is SO rich in history… Often being referred to as the “world’s most conquered city”, each of the foreign dominations left their own mark in every corner of this incredible place. From the Phoenicians, to the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantine Empire, the Arabs, the Normans, the Swabians (Hohenstaufen Dynasty), the Angevins, the Aragonese, the Spanish, the House of Savoy, the Austrians, the Bourbon Dynasty (Spanish Bourbons) and of course, finally the Kingdom of Italy (Italian Unification)! So you can imagine the awe-inspiring visuals these cultures left here. Here I was at La Palazzina Cinese or Chinese Palace - definitely something I didn’t expect to come across during a walk in a woodland area of Palermo :’)! More on this in an earlier post - see my story now for a link to that one! 👀

The May of 1924 would prove to be a fateful month for Sicily, for Italy, and ultimately the United States too, with the arrival of Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, fresh from crushing electoral victory, to Palermo. In a stunning about turn from previous Italian administrations, Mussolini not only acknowledged the existence of the Sicilian Mafia on their home soil, but declared his intention to end their rule too. From the capital, the Duce arrived in Agrigento, long infamous as a city where the "number of Mafiosi was surpassed only by the number of their victims". Bold words indeed, as were the soon to be dictator's condemnation that it was "no longer tolerable that a few hundred criminals should oppress a magnificent population such as your own". So easily could such sentiments have been idle political rhetoric. They may even have turned out to be, were it not for a dramatic incident which occurred with Mussolini's subsequent visit to Piana degli Albanesi, then known as Piana dei Greci. The line between public officials and organised criminals in 20th century Sicily was always a blurred one. In Piana dei Greci however, it was entirely non existent, for her mayor, Don Francesco Cuccia, was well known as the head of a particularly feared Mafia warband. Appearances had to be maintained however, and so it was arranged that Cuccia would be there to welcome the Duce on his official visit. Mussolini's security man on the ground, Cesare Mori, reasoning that none would dare touch the Prime Minister in such presence, organised for Cuccia to ride in the same automobile as Mussolini on the day of the visit. For good measure however, and also to make the visit more of an occasion, Mori ensured that an armed security detail would also accompany the Duce on motorcycles. Thus it was that on the 7th May 1924, the Duce of Fascism arrived in Piana dei Greci, and with Mayor Cuccia, nicknamed Don Ciccio, there to greet him, Mussolini met the Mafia. Yet what was to have been a peaceful conclusion to his visit to Sicily, would trigger a war for the very soul of the island...

☀️ **The Trinacria: Symbol of the Sun God in Three Seasons** ☀️ The Trinacria is more than just a symbol; it's a tale of seasons and the power of the Sun God guiding them. It represents the cyclic nature of life through SPRING, SUMMER, and WINTER. 🌸🌞❄️ In Roman times, this symbol became tightly linked to Sicily, where the first coins with this figure were minted, turning the island into a magical place steeped in history. 💰✨ #Trinacria #Sicily #SicilianHistory #TravelTips #WesternSicily #GrandTour #CouplesTravel #LuxuryBnB
