Today, 1st May 1169, saw the start of the Anglo-Norman Invasion of Ireland. In the same way that the Normans became conquerors of large parts of Italy and Sicily 100 years earlier; it was as hired mercenaries, rather than invaders, that they first appeared in the country. Dermot MacMurragh, the deposed King of Leinster, hired a force of Norman knights from England with the approval of King Henry II, to help win back his kingdom in south east Ireland. In return he pledged loyalty to King Henry and offered land to mercenaries. The following year more Normans arrived, including Richard "Strongbow" de Clare, who married Dermot's daughter and upon Dermot's death, claimed the Kingdom of Leinster as his own. Feeling he needed to assert his authority over these new Norman lands, King Henry II invaded Ireland in 1171, bringing both the Norman territories and Irish lands under his control with the backing of the Pope. After bringing the country to a temporary peace, he allocated more lands to Norman nobles and then left for England the following year. Soon after his departure these new fiefdoms and remaining Irish kingdoms began fighting each other once again. Carlisle Cathdral - Part 1 With Christian origins going back to the Romans and then Vikings, the diocese was established in 1133 by Henry I in attempts to settle the ever-fluid Cumbrian border with Scotland. The Norman Romanesque architecture can still be seen in parts although Early English/Gothic became quite popular. In 1292, the Cathedral and other wooden structures in the town burnt down laying the way for the 14th century featuring wars with Scotland, attempts at rebuilding, but a lack of labour (and clerics) due to ongoing bouts of plague. The Cathedral spent a large part of the 15th century benefitting from the growing break with Continental Christendom via a boom in English nationalism. The churches in Palermo absolutely astonished me. This one, inside the Palazzo Normani is a testament to the vision of the Norman kings of Sicily. Here you can clearly see the incorporation of Arab elements, such as a verse from the Quran on a pillar and Kufic script on the muqarnas ceiling. Greek Orthodox elements are also obvious in the gold mosaic and icon representations. But these kings were Latin (Catholic) Christians. The co-existence of these communities in Palermo was clearly more than mere toleration, and this remarkable chapter in history will certainly make its way into Villains and Virgins podcast once I get through all the research.

Siege of Alexandria (1174) Was Battle between ayyubid & Kingdom of Sicily 🏳️ Saladin had abolished the Fatimid Caliphate, Fatimid sympathizers began plotting against Saladin; a conspiracy led by Umara ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Yamani included Egyptians, Sudanese, and some Turkish officers and soldiers. 🛡️Saladin was able to crack down on the conspirators and punish them. Umara was crucified on April 6, 1174. The Egyptians and Sudanese were exiled to Upper Egypt. King William II sent out a fleet of 280 ships, 30,000 soldiers, and 1,500 knights. April 20th 1176 – The Death of Strongbow On This Day: Strongbow (Richard de Clare) died in June 1176 of an infection. He was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Dublin, with Laurence O’Toole, the Archbishop of Dublin. Strongbow was first succeeded by his son Gilbert. When Gilbert died a minor, the inheritance passed to Strongbow’s daughter Isabel. Isabel, on the wishes of King Henry II and his son Richard the Lionheart, was married to William Marshal. They married in 1189, when she was seventeen years old and he was forty-three years old. It was through this marriage that William inherited Strongbow’s lands. The horse of the Byzantine’s messenger died instantly when Hugh Touboeuf’s fist rocketed down in a devastating arc, his gauntlet striking the horse with such force that it crumpled to the ground. Typically messengers would be treated with more respect, but a Norman knight like Hugh was not your average 11th century soldier in the Mediterranean. Nonetheless, the message was very clear: fight the Normans and you’ll suffer a terrible fate. While the Normans are well known for their conquest of England in 1066, their exploits in Southern Italy are often overlooked. Starting as pilgrims visiting the holy land traveling through Southern Italy, Norman Knights would be recruited into mercenary service with the Lombard principalities of Southern Italy as well as with the Byzantine Roman Empire. In mercenary service they would earn a reputation as fearless warriors whose devastating cavalry charges could defeat enemies that far outnumbered them. Year by year more Normans would arrive from France, eventually becoming so powerful they carved out their own county in 1046 at Melfi.
