In 1979, Robert Palmer covered the ABB's 10th anniversary reunion tour for 'Enlightened Rogues' for Rolling Stone. Palmer made multiple appearances in 'Play All Night' as he was among the earliest converts to the magic of the ABB. https://www.longlivetheabb.com I actually got a chance to read the raw transcripts of Palmer's interviews at the Hogan Jazz Archives at Tulane. They had his copy of 'Enlightened Rogues' as well. --- "The Allman Brothers’ two-guitar sound has received more publicity than the two-drummers setup, but the interaction between Trucks and Jaimoe is equally distinctive. After a while Butch stops tinkering with his timpani and gets back behind his traps, and it becomes evident that the magic is still there. The two drummers set up a busy, bristling whirlpool of accents and cross-rhythms, and not once do they get in each other’s way. Ultimately, the group’s excitement about the album and tour is something that can’t be faked. Even Jaimoe, who admits he agreed to the reunion initially because he needed money to continue his music studies, says, 'I was sick of playin’ loud music, and man, I still don’t like to play loud music. But I sure like playing with these guys.' Butch Trucks says, 'I came here a little leery. When the thing broke up we were cooked, just burned out. But the first time I heard the new album I went apeshit. It’s got that energy in it, that feeling and intensity we have to have. And we’re just getting warmed up.'" I hadn’t been doing any singing, so when we tried to put the vocal on it, we found it was in too low a key. It didn’t really matter though, it came off good. He was sitting just off to the right side swiggin’ on a bottle of Robitussen. And as big as he was, nobody was going to tell him anything different. They did set up some congas though and Jimmy Robinson’s conga player sat in in place of Jaimoe. As far as the performance goes, the Allman Brothers played for about an hour. There wasn’t anything like a 30 minute 'Whippin' Post' but they all took turns doin’ their little thing. Had the privilege of visiting Skydog Oregon today- an extraordinary experience that touched my heart deeply. 🩵 Being there, I could feel Clare’s unwavering dedication to these magnificent horses, each one flourishing under her care—truly a sight to behold. The sanctuary itself was beautiful and impeccably maintained, reflecting the love and hard work poured into every corner. Witnessing the Saylors thriving and looking so beautiful moved me to tears. Spending time with Mighty Silver, Driggs, Raggedy Anne, and Queen Sienna was profoundly touching; their spirit and vitality were overwhelming. Seeing the Saylors made everything even more memorable. I am profoundly thankful for this visit. Immense gratitude to Clare for her warm hospitality and to my dear friend Maurisa, whose companionship made this meaningful journey all the more special. Dickey and Berry were in the Second Coming when the Allman Brothers Band formed in March 1969. The band had a regular gig at The Scene in Jacksonville. "The Second Coming played six nights a week at The Scene (Jacksonville). Our repertoire was about half rock and half blues. I recall Dickey singing that Paul Butterfield tune 'Born in Chicago.' He also sang 'Born Under a Bad Sign.' Berry Oakley saying 'Oh Pretty Woman' and 'Hoochie Coochie Man.' Larry Reinhardt did a bunch of Hendrix covers — things like 'Fire' and 'Manic Depression' — and Dale [Betts] sang some Jefferson Airplane tunes." 🎼 “Little Martha”, Dickey Betts R.I.P. - The Allman Brothers Band. One of the best finger picking songs ever made... Allman and bandmate Dickey Betts played the tune on 6-string guitars using open E tuning, one using a flat-top guitar, and one using a resonator guitar. The song’s simple melody and rhythmic counterpoint quickly made it a favorite among fans; acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke, who often covered the song in performance, once called it “the most perfect guitar song ever written.” The story goes that Allman had a dream where Jimi Hendrix showed him the melody of the tune in a Holiday Inn motel bathroom, using the sink faucet as a guitar fretboard. Remembering the melody during the October 1971 sessions that produced most of the third side of what would become Eat a Peach, Allman laid down the track, joined only by Dickey Betts and bassist Berry Oakley, though Oakley’s part would be mixed out of the final version, leaving the number as a duet for the two guitarists.
