Well we finally got our wish yesterday morning, with wonderful misty conditions in most of the county. Not, it has to be said, in the very highest parts, where it can usually be relied upon, so after taking a few shots of the mist below me in the fields, I dashed off to a woodland I’d scouted a couple of weeks ago. I find painting spring softness challenging. So often it’s the high contrast scenes with intense light and shadow which make the most dynamic watercolors. A gentler palette and high key values can look washed out. That said- the beautiful woods in the front of our house with all the spring ephemerals compelled me to do my best to capture it. My inclusion of the Pileated Woodpecker is a documentation of my awareness of his increased activity in that bit of woods. Someday I’ll look back at this painting and remember these thoughts. I love that.

I feel like spring has suddenly shown signs of appearing in my area, which is really nice after what feels like a very long winter season. Over the weekend I was able to go up to the forest where the blue bells are starting to flower. Last year I felt there were not as many and therefore it's nice to see them all in the flowering stages and I can't wait to go back up and smell them all when they fully flower. That particular woodland walk has been too muddy and boggy to navigate with the camera, so it was nice that it was a little drier this week to do so. There is something really peaceful walking in the woods, a level of leaving life's troubles behind and focusing on the 'now'. Taking the week off from posting while I was busy on other photography projects, has allowed me to come back fresh. 💜The magic of the Bluebell Woodland deserves to have a permanent spot on the grid! 💜I'm so lucky to have this, quite literally, on my doorstep, and I don't ever take it for granted.
