A rare glimpse of spring sunshine over the weekend on the gorgeous Ceredigion coast, at Llangrannog. A wonderful chance to photograph the plants. Annwen is trying to get to grips with plant names in Welsh. As a fluent speaker she didn’t necessarily learn names of wildflowers and plants in school. With Becs now learning Welsh, it’s a great chance for us both to get inspired by plant names. Plant names sometimes tell a story, and different stories in different languages sometimes. In Welsh, a bluebell is Clychau’r gog…meaning cuckoo’s bells. The flowers are in full bloom yet, but I haven’t heard a cuckoo yet. Have you? Are they here yet from their winter home? The simple, single-cell church at Llanfigael, Anglesey, which is dedicated to St Bigail (or Figael), was built with schist rubble on the site of a medieval church, by 18th-century squire William Morris. It sits on a bed of green, which in past weeks has been dotted with daffodils and bluebells. Entering the church, you might be surprised to see the complete 19th-century interior, which dates from 1841. Box-pews fill the east end, while to the west, the poorer of the parish sat on backless benches with paddle-board ends. The north wall is commanded by a double-decker pulpit. Before we adopted St Bigail's in 2007, a local retired vicar and school teacher, Rev. Edgar Jones, took the vulnerable redundant church under his wing and helped to protect it from west Anglesey's sometimes harsh weather. Sadly, he died before the church was repaired and reopened, in 2009. Rev. Jones is buried in the churchyard, just outside the east wall. Today we had a lovely visit from the Peace Run before they head off to Kilkenny, Ireland. Our Director Lucy Sutherland welcomed them to the Botanic Garden along with Cllr. Rob Evans and Cllr. Nysia Evans. The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run is a global torch relay that offers everyone in the world a chance to express their longing for peace.
