The garden tool storage is settling into its surroundings well. We built it last year, mainly out of pallet wood, so she’s only been in place a few months. I have planted a climbing rose at the side of her, there is also a hardy geranium which is starting to grow around her. I have also planted some Erigeron at the front to soften the look a little, fingers crossed it works. An update on Uno and Thumbelina 🦊🦊 After an emotional weekend last week when Thumbelina moved Uno to another den, I am pleased to say that I am in regular sight of both of them, albeit not quite as close as before. Thumbelina regularly pops into our garden to see what’s going on and I have spotted her on numerous occasions nuzzling up to her grandmother, Fergie. The world of foxes is so interesting considering Fergie was trying to steal away a cub and food from Thumbelina’s den not that long ago. Much to my delight, I see Uno most evenings and s/he’s kept me amused with her shenanigans. S/he’s met a magpie and has enjoyed following it and then being followed by the magpie and then back and forth this game went until the magpie got bored and flew off. S/he’s met one of the local cats and had a stare out competition with it. Uno won. This evening, Uno discovered her tail and spent an age trying to chase it, tumbling over and over again in doing so. ☺️🦊 I do miss seeing Thumbelina and Uno at such close quarters, however, I am very content squinting a little to be able to see Thumbelina and Uno in their new hideout. As much as it was heart aching to see them leave our garden, I think it was a good thing that they moved out as Uno is now back in the midst of the foxy gang and this lone cub will learn a lot about being a fox in the very close quarters of their great grandmother, mother, aunts, uncles and cousins, and hopefully Uno’s father too. 🦊🧡 #foxoftheday #fox #foxes #vulpesvulpes #dorsetwildlife #britishwildlife #wildlifegarden #bbcspringwatch

1. So now it's 5 eggs! She laid number 5 at 5.11 am and sat on them all for half an hour. Like yesterday, she covered them up with more nest materials and then in the afternoon incubated for half an hour, then left. She was In and out all day. 2. While she was incubating Mr Blue Tit brought in a mealworm and fed it to her, it was a bit of a tug of war at first 😄. So the sign is up for #nomowsummer - yes I feel the need to explain to the neighbours why my front garden isn’t getting mowed because I live on a housing estate with neat or fake lawns. I know what I am doing it for and that’s all that matters. I don’t fit in (even though I work so hard to a lot of the time). We moved in last summer and the biggest regret I had last year was cutting it in the height of summer after it had been left to go wild for months when the house was vacant. We had grasshoppers for goodness sake!! I have thankfully now educated myself a little more and the advice is to mow only once a year in September/October when most wildlife will have completed their life cycles. Finished the last few jobs at our project south of Norwich this week, in the sunshine 🌞 final planting and woodchip mulch to help keep moisture in the soil and put the weeds off whilst the planting establishes. Before we started, this garden was an expanse of lawn and large driveway, that separated the garden from the house. We made the parking area smaller, and planted beech hedging around it to screen once established. We connected the existing patio area to the garden with winding paths, islands of beds and a new tree lined avenue - with the idea of creating lots of exciting routes for our clients children to run around and play, and to interact with the garden. A pond was made which will bring wildlife into the garden, and for the children to experience the magic of a pond and its inhabitants, fenced off with chestnut paling for supervised visits… larger open spaces were created at the rear of the garden and in the courtyard for play and relaxation. We made a living willow archway and fence to separate areas, vegetable garden next to the existing shed and compost. Torrential rain all night means our streams are once again brimming. Luckily I took a little walk around our plot in the sunshine yesterday... Many areas we leave to nature, just managing the thuggish invaders, such as brambles. When we moved here, the area where the geese are exploring, photo 6 onwards, was an enormous thicket of brambles, where nothing else could grow. We cleared them all over many weeks, and now we see a progression of wildflowers throughout the spring/summer up in this part, so we don't mow many of these areas untill late August! Cow parsley, buttercups, red campion, foxgloves...🤗 I love my garden, but do not wish to become a slave to it, as I love doing many other things too! But, hours spent taming and manipulating some beds and borders, brings me much joy. Garden Serenity- Visual Diary - 2024 Today I sat in my wildlife garden enjoying the beautiful weather. It’s amazing what you can observe when you are still. A butterfly danced on the blossoms of the apple tree that is in full bloom. Chickadees, house finches, and sparrows darted among the branches seeking the suet blocks. Bee’s were filling themselves from the hummingbird feeders. The Mason bee’s were coming and going from the Mason Bee House. Just a little wild patch behind the shed beside the leaf compost 🌱 I have an abundance of forget me nots and let them carpet the vegetable garden in spring. I just let a few plants go to seed every year and they help with the dandelions. I don't really edit this area much - except for the garlic mustard. I try to pull it all out the best I can. It's easiest to pull out right now and worth prioritizing. Use a garden knife and be sure to get the roots.

Toasting the Garden 🍸🦋 Our community wildlife garden celebrated its spring open day last week. We welcomed local families to enjoy the space, take part in activities, and join us in toasting the garden with a botanical cocktail! 🦋Pondlife discovery 🦋Meadow creation with Yellow Rattle 🦋Forest School crafts 🦋Tree, plant & fungi ID 🦋Marshmellow toasting 🦋Botanical cocktails & mocktails We enjoyed a refreshing beverage I created for the garden, with edible flowers to flavour and colour, based upon a 'tom collins'. This was a thirsty crowd, so thankfully our garden secretary, Alexis, was on hand with me at the bar! 🍸🍸🍸 85 local residents came to enjoy the open garden, which is a good turnout for a very rainy afternoon. I'd just like to talk about a serious issue for a second. Something that doesn't get brought up that often when we're talking about habitat gardening. Tell me if this sounds familiar. You've just eaten breakfast or lunch. You're ready to go outside. You put your shoes on and whatever other outdoor apparel. You step to the backdoor and take a quick look out the window. What you see is a bunch of birds, living their best lives, visiting the bird feeder, hopping around on the ground looking for bugs or nesting supplies, or splashing in the bird bath. You then make the gut-wrenching decision to wait a little bit before going outside, because you don't want to interrupt the birds. One word….Camassia! 💙 Just back from a Garden Tour at the Highgrove Estate (bought as a Christmas present for my parents but I had to accompany them, obviously!) and one plant that really struck me was the camassia. En masse they look spectacular…in their prime at the moment….I’m definitely going to take some inspiration away and use them more in my planting designs. Aware of them but often overlooked, they’re going on my bulb list for next season at home too! The gardens were beautiful, full of colour and interest, something around every corner…and really low key considering they’re a royal garden 👑 Edges not trimmed, weeds here and there…so much more natural than the manicured formal gardens of large stately homes and so much more up my street. 😊 That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of work ongoing, it’s endless for a staff of only 10, but they allow what some might call weeds to grow if they’re not in the wrong place and not overwhelming other plants and I love that. Provision for wildlife is everywhere, 🐝 seasonal interest at every turn and sustainability in the form of huge underground water tanks storing rain water (which I learnt today!). A really inspiring garden full of different styles and plant types and one I shall take ideas from and snippets of with me into my future projects. 🤔 Will definitely return at a different time of year, summer will look incredible 🌺 but autumn will also dazzle I’m sure 🍁 Highly recommended!
