Pulling up to the Hotel Statler in 1953, as photographed by Julius Shulman. Built the previous year for a then-whopping $15 million ($175M today), the Statler was a massive 1,275-room luxury hotel in downtown LA which became a popular destination for high-profile guests such as John F. Kennedy and Pope John Paul II. Through its 59 years, the hotel would go through a number of name changes, becoming the Statler Hilton in 1958, the Los Angeles Hilton in 1968, the Omni Los Angeles Hotel in 1995, and then the Wilshire Grand Hotel in 1999. Ultimately, in 2013, the hotel was demolished, and has since been replaced with the 73-story Wilshire Grand Tower, which is now the noted as the tallest building west of the Mississippi (due only to its decorative spire which reaches beyond the height of the US Bank Tower). Statler and Waldorf are a pair of Muppet characters best known for their hot-tempered opinions and shared liking for heckling. The two elderly men first appeared in The Muppet Show in 1975, where they consistently jeered the entirety of the cast and their performances from their balcony seats. Created by Jim Henson, the characters have been performed by numerous puppeteers, including Henson himself, in a variety of films and television productions within the Muppet franchise. The puppets were designed by Bonnie Erickson and are named after two landmark New York City hotels, the Statler Hilton and the Waldorf-Astoria. In The Muppet Show, the two are always criticising Fozzie Bear's humour, except for one occasion where Fozzie heckles them back. Statler and Waldorf find themselves extremely entertaining and always burst into mutual laughter at their own witticisms. It is later revealed in the “A Muppet Family Christmas” special that the two hecklers are friends with Fozzie's mother, Emily Bear. Despite constantly complaining about the show and how terrible some acts are, they always return for the following week. Their reasons for doing so are a mystery even to them, according to one version of the Muppet Show theme. In one instance, Waldorf says “Why do we always come here?" to which Statler replies "I guess we'll never know". They also have a tendency to break the fourth wall. Author Ben Underwood remarked on how the characters generally "blur the boundary between performer and audience", as they are "concurrently audience members and performers". Underwood points to a second season incident in which the characters see themselves watching the Muppets, with Statler skeptical, saying ""No one would watch junk like that". October 3-5, 2019 The Statler Hilton Hotel Downtown Dallas Checked into 1956 The Statler Hilton Hotel for a few days, attending the Cultural Landscape Foundation Conference in Dallas at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art. Most exciting to stay in a project that, as a Historic Preservationist and advocate of mid-century architecture and landscapes, I find incredible interest in the success of such a preservation project. To GREAT fanfare, the Statler Hilton Dallas opened in 1956 in downtown Dallas, built at the time for a cost of over $16M. The Hilton corporation had purchased Statler Hotels Company shortly before completion of construction, so Hilton was added to the official name. It was the first major hotel to be built in Dallas for 30 years, at the time. The hotel was designed with the latest in architectural and electronic innovations. One architectural innovation was the use of a cantilevered reinforced slab system, allowing the impressive height, for the time. The exterior was designed with decorative glass and porcelain curtain wall. Over time, neglect took a major toll on The Staler and the property closed in 2001. There were several attempts to revive the hotel through the years, after there was an attempt in 2003 to demolish the beautiful hotel. The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the hotel on Most Endangered Places list in 2007 and 2008! Finally in 2013 a developer embracing preservation strategy, using state and federal tax credits, was most successful implementing a $175 million SUCCESS STORY! WOW it is fabulous. The "new" hotel includes 159 guestrooms, 219 private apartments, concert venue, meeting rooms, including a 14,500 square foot ballroom, FOUR dining outlets and retail and office space. A well planned mix-use of historic space. Especially LOVE the incredible mural in the lobby by noted artist, Jack Lubin. What a SPECIAL PLACE. The 1956 Stalter Hilton is listed in the National Register of historic Places.
