Pocket of Light A pocket of light on the river as we wandered away from the magical St Nectans Glen. The entire walk around it is just as special as the main attraction itself. This little spot felt more than just a picturesque scene, it’s a reminder to appreciate the smaller moments, to find joy and peace in the simple things. It would have been easy to pass by if it wasn’t for how the light drew our attention right to it! The sight was so ethereal, it felt like nature was putting on its own light show! This week I'll be sharing a few stories of refugees who have settled safely in Australia.⁠ ⁠ ---⁠ ⁠ Šejla Alimanović Stammers came to Australia in 1993 with her family from Bosnia.⁠ ⁠ ---⁠ ⁠ I was born in Croatia, but I’ve been raised a Bosnian because that’s where my parents are from. ⁠ ⁠ Mum and Dad are from Muslim families. They had the kind of upbringing where people followed the traditions and culture that came with Islam, to varying degrees. ⁠ ⁠ I was around five when the war started in 1991.⁠ ⁠ Because my dad was in the Croatian army it was ultimately going to result in his death if he stayed. It was a violent situation and I think you either stay and fight for the nation or you pack everything and go. ⁠ ⁠ We moved around to lots of different places. Once we were at my auntie’s in the basement sitting in the dark with a candle, waiting for a bomb to hit. Luckily it didn’t – it was the house down the street. There were visible rockets in the air, and bullets.⁠ ⁠ We stayed in a refugee camp in Sweden for nine months. Everything was uncertain and we didn’t know where life is headed, there is no stability. ⁠ ⁠ My mum’s auntie [in Canberra] wrote a letter of recommendation for us, for a humanitarian visa. I was really excited; I just imagined it was America with Cadillacs and skyscrapers. We were all a bit shocked with the reality though; Canberra is nothing like the movies we grew up watching.⁠ ⁠ The hardest was learning how to adapt and assimilate as individuals, and as a family unit. It’s complicated – We came a long way, and my folks saw Australia as a place where there was opportunity to be who we wanted and retain our heritage. They wanted the best for us – to get educated and go on to lead peaceful lives. ⁠ ⁠ I returned when I was 21, to be immersed in the culture that my parents were so determined to preserve in me. I spent the first day in Sarajevo just walking around and crying. Every green space in the city was converted to graveyards, and were predominantly Muslim. "Lea" This is Lea, my neighbour's beautiful cat. She's my best furry friend and an excellent assistant. Whenever I go out to shoot photographs in my neighbourhood, she always accompanies me. She loves to sit beside me, purring softly, and watch me work. Unfortunately, she doesn't like cameras, so taking her picture is challenging.
