Batman (Ben Affleck Variants) There’s a lot about Zack Snyder’s DC films that I don’t particularly like. Ben Affleck is not one of those things. While I wish that the writing around this version of the character was a bit better, Affleck’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader boasted some astonishing action scenes and an unmatched menacing presence. Affleck’s Batman received FIVE minifigure variants that I’ll briefly discuss throughout this post, and some feature more nuanced alterations for better or worse that I find particularly interesting. 2016 saw the Dawn of TWO variants; the armored version featured in one small set, and the standard variant featured in two sets. The armored version is mostly dark pearl grey plastic with the exception of the head, hands, and hip piece. While the use of this molded armor piece on the torso is nifty and adds some nice bulk, I’ve always been of the opinion that two new molds were absolutely necessary to capture this appearance properly. The more egregious area of note here though is the use of the standard Bat Cowl with its tall pointy ears when the helmet seen on this suit features ears that are shorter and flatter. One major redeeming quality of this figure is the use of the glow-in-the-dark head under the cowl though. The eyes glow brightly when the lights are out, and it’s really cool to see on one of the few live-action Batman figures that ACTUALLY has white eyes. Superman / Clark Kent (Black Suit / ZSJL) AKA “The Revived Son of Hope” A Custom Minfigure by @yafd_minifigure and @lightcustom_wz I have wanted a Black Suit Superman figure for a LOOONG time. I enjoyed Zack Snyder’s Justice League to the point that after I watched it, I actually started displaying my figures from the 2017 sets that came out with the release of Joss Whedon’s atrocious theatrical cut. However, what’s always been missing is a good Black Suited Man of Steel. This custom figure aims.. quite a bit higher in terms of art style and coverage of detail compared to the official LEGO figures. In any case, I found it hard to open this neat and protective plastic box without saying to myself, “This is freaking awesome.” This custom minifigure is a collaborative effort between YAFD Minifigs (a Brand that I have only recently discovered) and Light Custom (a brand that has been taking the custom LEGO community by storm quite recently with wave after wave of excellent figures). I’m not entirely sure where the efforts of one brand end and the input of another begins, but the final product is one that I’m quite impressed with. This custom minifig is comprised of official LEGO parts with the exception of a custom molded hair piece, wrist attachments, and a custom hard plastic cape. It is adorned with brilliantly crisp and high quality pad printed detail, and includes two alternate one-sided head pieces. Mattel DC Multiverse DCEU The Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Shazam Mattel celebrates its anniversary every January and to join in the celebration, here are some DC action figures from the now discontinued #MattelDCMultiverse line of 6-inch action figures. Also a lookback on the #DCExtendedUniverse, here are #DCEU versions of #Cyborg and #TheFlash from the #JusticeLeague movie, #Aquaman from the #AquamanMovie, and #Shazam from the #ShazamMovie. These figures were released in the last years of the line and showed quite some improvements compared to earlier releases. One might say they were starting to catch up with the competition, Marvel Legends by Hasbro. In themselves, these figures gave accessible versions of the live action iterations of these superheroes. My favorite feature in these are the face sculpts that are quite accurate, all things considered. 76046 Heroes of Justice: Sky High Battle Looking back at the DC Extended Universe through LEGO sets. I'd say this set, as opposed to set 76044, is for the #DawnOfJustice side of the film. I got this for "standard" #DCEU minifigs of #Batman, #Superman, and #WonderWoman, but having the Batwing is not bad at all. Having these three minifigures, I thought of giving tribute to one of my favorite scenes in the #DCExtendedUniverse for this shot. The Kryptonite gun, by the way, is from set 76044. This set also includes a LexCorp helicopter and Lex Luthor and Lois Lane #Minifigures, although I still haven't built them yet. 76044 Clash of the Heroes Looking back at the DC Extended Universe through LEGO sets. I just have three from this subtheme, actually. The first one I got is for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The movie tackled two premises: the fight between the two iconic heroes and the catalyst to the formation of the Justice League. This set is for the #BatmanVSuperman aspect of the film, with armored #Batman, and of course, #Superman. #BvS was the second film released in the #DCEU and by #ZackSnyder in that film series. The DCEU is ending this week with the release of Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. I’m going to miss the DCEU as a franchise yes it had a flawed foundation full of studio interference and meddling and change in leadership but it had potential. I would’ve loved to have seen a crisis on infinite earths film or Justice League Part 2 & Part 3. The Batfleck🦇 I was recently in a massive Batman mood, and obviously that included rewatching Batman V Superman. And again, Henry Cavill’s Superman, absolute perfection! But I’m here to talk about the pure brilliance which is The Batfleck!💯 Ben Affleck’s Batman is in his own next level class all together! Not only is Zack Snyder’s vision of his Batman cut straight out of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, which he and Affleck execute expertly, but just the whole presence with which Affleck portrays his Bruce Wayne and Batman is something extraordinary🙌🏼 As far as comic accuracy goes, I can’t think of a live action Batman that nails it better than the Batfleck. (2021) Zack Snyder's Justice League and (2008/2012) The Dark Knight / The Dark Knight Rises It's #BatmanDay2023 and here are different movie Batmans by McFarlane Toys. Starting up with these two, these are the individual releases of Ben Affleck's and Christian Bale's iterations of Batman. The announcement of The Ultimate Movie Collection 6-pack when I already had the Batfleck, Battinson, and The Flash Movie Keaton Batman figures had me thinking, what if I just get the individual releases instead? I went ahead and got Bale from The Dark Knight Trilogy wave. I honestly wasn't an immediate fan of Christian Bale's Batman by director Christopher Nolan because I didn't immediately get to see Batman Begins. When I got to see the trilogy, I found that all the praise was justified. I guess that was partly why people weren't ready to welcome Ben Affleck into the role. He did prove to do well in it, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and even in the less desirable version of the Justice League movie. Wonder Woman and Aquaman from WW84 and Zack Snyder's Justice League DC Multiverse by McFarlane Toys Now that we're in this transition period of sorts for DC movies, and coming from the previous Batman v Superman post, I thought: maybe I'd do some shots of the DCEU Justice League by McFarlane Toys. (Yes, it still kinda irks me that there's no official JL2021 version of Wonder Woman that would perhaps be differentiated by a sword and shield.) This and the next couple of posts are inspired by the final group shot in Zack Snyder's Justice League. The scene had a golden tone, and I think it's a nice coincidence that I wanted to post something yellow today.
