Reposted from @tamilguardian At a recent gig in London, ‘Cinnamon and Spice’, Pritt, an Eelam Tamil singer, performed alongside four female South Asian artists. Aligning with Pritt’s passions, the event aimed to celebrate underrepresented South Asian female talent and create a platform to share their music. As a part of BBC Asian Network Future Sounds in 2021, Pritt uses her platform to celebrate Tamil music and encourage artists in the UK and worldwide, particularly supporting underrepresented musicians. Chatting to Tamil Guardian at the ‘Cinnamon and Spice’ event, Pritt explained the struggles Tamil artists like her face in the music industry: ‘especially in the music industry with the lack of representation, people kept grouping me into black or Indian. They would never give me my own identity. I shouldn’t have to ask for bare minimum, this is me telling you I am Tamil.’ __ Read the full conversation on tamilguardian.com WomenSupportingWomen #ChangeMakers #TamilsGoingPlaces #TWDGmusic #followyourdreams #chaseyourdreams #Tamil #TamilRapper #TWDGdiaspora #DiasporaTamils #TamilMusician #RepresentationMatters #PressForProgress #alternativemusic #electronicmusic #hiphop #worldmusic #GlassCeiling #TWDGglassceiling #TWDGmigrants #tamilrefugees #famouspeople  #SriLankanTamil #musi

#FocusBooks Assume Nothing: A Story of Intimate Violence Tanya Selvaratnam @tanyaauthor Published 2020. In Assume Nothing, award-winning filmmaker Tanya Selvaratnam bravely recounts the intimate abuse she suffered while in a relationship with former NY State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and uses her story to examine the domestic violence crisis plaguing America. Born in Sri Lanka before emigrating as a baby to California, Selvaratnam witnessed her father abuse her mother. She knew the patterns and signs of domestic violence, and she did not see herself as remotely vulnerable. An Ivy League grad, producer, author, cancer-survivor, and connected professional in the art world, when she met then-NY State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman at the Democratic National Convention, they seemed like the perfect match sharing similar interests. Then everything started to change. Schneiderman became controlling, mean, manipulative and violent. She was trapped in an abusive relationship with one of the most powerful men in New York. ‍ Selvaratnam details finding the strength to leave, risking her career, reputation, and safety, and how she struggled in the wake of the abuse to reclaim her voice. Assume Nothing scrutinizes the insidious way women learn to accept abuse, regardless of socio-economic status, age, gender, race, or religion. With singular sensitivity and nuance, Selvaratnam redefines what it means to be a victim of intimate partner violence. Reposted from @refinery29au While Cinderella has typically been a white, blonde woman, Shubshri Kandiah is one of the few South Asian women to portray the fairytale princess on stage. 👑 The 26-year-old, who plays the lead role of Ella in the Australian version of Broadway's @cinderellamusicalau, says this version does more than just make strides for cultural representation — it reflects a modern, empowered woman. "She really isn't the damsel in distress and the very girly princess in this version," @shubshrikandiah tells Culture Editor Alicia Vrajlal. "She's very much in charge of her destiny and it's a very modern take on the story," she says, assuring us there's still a wicked stepmother, a wonderful godmother and glass slippers involved. "The message of Cinderella is that you're enough just as you are, you don't need to have the most beautiful clothes. You don't need to come from the wealthiest family and they're the little things I think very much related to." Read the full interview in the 🔗 in bio. ✍️ @leeshiev #R29AU #ShubshriKandia #Cinderella ‐------------ #musicaltheatre #musicals #broadwaymusical #rodgersandhammerstein #TWDGarts #entertainment #arts #theatre #drama #australianplay #australianmusical #performingarts #creatives #theatreproduction #actors #theatredesign #directors #TamilDiaspora #AustralianTamil #TamilAustralian #TamilsGoingPlaces #TamilsDoingGood #TamilCreatives #southasianactor #SouthAsian #southasiandiaspora #southasiancreativesaus

Reposted from @thamarai.uk British Tamil singer and musician Ashnaa Sasikaran, well known on social media for her viral musical renditions, has embarked on her next creative journey. Ashnaa joins the cast of ‘Tale of Orpheus & Eurydice’, inspired by the timeless tale of the two star-crossed lovers. The show is a joyful 45-minute exploration of love, music, and hope for the future. Sharing her music on social media, @ashnaa_ns attracted the attention of Opera North, the show’s producers. “I’ll be playing the protaginist Eurydice, as an Indian classical musician. Merging opera and South Asian music, exploring a range of other musical genres, whilst telling the love story of Orpheus and Eurydice.” A Tale of Orpheus & Eurydice begins at the couple’s engagement party where they reminisce about their very first meeting when they negotiated their way around an unfamiliar city together. Their memories spark a celebration of different musical styles including opera, folk, jazz, blues, soul – and Indian classical music which is where Ashnaa’s own musical journey began. “I grew up listening to, and learning, South Indian classical music: Carnatic music. The pivotal point for me was when I went on this trip to India and watched this amazing festival of loads of artists in one place. After coming back, I just decided to see what else I could do with music, exploring other genres like jazz, funk, R&B. Through that, I decided to work on some of my own compositions and started putting some on social media.” For Tamil music fans, Ashnaa is performing a song in Tamil, as-well as her first single which audiences will be able to hear live during the show. Part of Opera North’s Orpheus season, and in collaboration with South Asian Arts-UK and GemArts, the play is running at various venues across England till the 5th July 2022. She will be releasing her debut mixtape - damnshestamil - on the 3rd September 2021. Here’s what she says about Kamali: “In 2019, someone sent me the link of the short movie, 'Kamali' and wrote: you have to make a music video with her. The movie is about a seven year old Kamali, the only female skater in Mahabalipuram in India, who goes against the grain and takes ownership of her life with the support of her mother. I was so moved and inspired by her story and sent it right away to @japhnagold and told him to watch it. A day later he called me up saying how he wrote this song with tears in his eyes. Kamali. In so many ways I could relate to this little girl. Growing up, we look at the world with curiosity and envision infinite possibilities without any limitation. For a lot of us, these possibilities and dreams get blurry by the way the roles of men and women are dealt out. It is culturally rooted in ancient traditions where we are only good enough to become wives & mothers... Where our life's purpose is to fullfill our duties of raising our children and taking care of the household. This still exists! I want to speak to all the Kamalis in the world to think bigger than that, to look further than that. If we can birth life, imagine what we can create if we are fully off the leash?! With this song I want to be another crack in the cycle, so that one day we can fully break it together.” @kamalifilm @kamaliskater 🎥 Director: @itssasharainbow 🎥 Production:@academyfilms #TamilChangeMakers #ChangeMakers #TamilsGoingPlaces #TWDGmusic #chaseyourdreams #followyourdreams #SwissTamil #TamilRapper #TWDGdiaspora #DiasporaTamils #TamilMusician #RepresentationMatters #PressForProgress #alternativemusic #electronicmusic #hiphop #worldmusic #GlassCeiling #TWDGglassceiling #TWDGmigrants #tamilrefugees #famouspeople #SriLankanTamil #music

#TWDGartandcraft presents a young South Asian Australian artist in the prestigious #ArchbaldPrize for portraiture now at the #ArtGalleryOfNSW #ArchbaldPrizeFinalist Kirthana Selvaraj @kirthanasart The green suit, a self-portrait #TamilsGoingPlaces Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Kirthana is the youngest of triplets. Her mother grew up in India and her father in Singapore and her family moved to Western Sydney in the late 90s. An alumna of UNSW’s Fine Arts program, Kirthana Selvaraj is also an established art therapist with a master’s degree from Western Sydney University.  ‘My body is political, it holds multiple truths, I am at once femme, queer and brown – a site for violence, transgressions, tenderness and joy,’ says Kirthana Selvaraj. ‘Focusing on how the queer, brown body navigates the duality of both enunciation and erasure within Western society, I chose to paint a self-portrait to visually reconcile these intersections of the seen and unseen. My expression reveals both my defiance and my pain. ‘The arch embodies a threshold into a liminal place, while the green suit demands space within it. My body resists the narrow canvas and symbolically challenges the rigidity of institutions that carry colonial legacies. Despite these oppressive systems, I am also governed by a politics of tenderness and survival. This is seen in the vibrant and saturated colours that refuse to be supressed. ‘By reimagining my body in this context, I not only want to subvert the colonial gaze, but also dream of an existence beyond the Eurocentric perceptions that still dominate our culture. This work embodies a divestment of the fetishising of brown bodies and an investment in a pulsating, queer, brown imaginary.’ Info and image: #AGNSW & IndianLink #portraitprize #AustralianArtist #SouthAsianArtist #SouthAsian #SouthAsianAustralian #creatives #creative #creativepeople #creativewomen #creativeWOC #creativePOC #TWDGart #ArtandCraft #art #WomenArtists #artists #painting #canvaspainting #oilpainting #portraitpainting #portraiture

#TamilsDoingGood #TamilsGoingPlaces #TamilLeaders Sathya Dharmini Gnanakaran Australia & New Zealand Director - Talent Beyond Boundaries. 🧡🧡🧡 "As  an immigration lawyer of 14 years, I’ve watched refugee clients grapple with traditional humanitarian programs; feeling like they’re constantly on trial about whether their circumstances are really ‘bad enough’ to justify seeking a life of safety and dignity - something that everyone on this planet wants and deserves. I’m excited to help implement the Skilled Refugee Pilot in Australia. The implementation of the Pilot will demonstrate how existing systems can be redesigned to include refugees and other displaced people in mainstream skilled migration programs providing a rare win-win situation for skilled refugees, their families and Australian employers. I believe Australia will benefit from welcoming skilled refugees the same way it already benefits from the migration of global talent. Skilled refugees are an untapped source of skills right now. Giving Australian businesses access to this talent pool will mean critical skills gaps can be filled. Vice-versa, being able to work in Australia provides refugees with a place to call home, without fear. And gives them the ability to choose how they grow and flourish with their families." 🧡🧡🧡 Talent Beyond Boundaries envisions a world where forcibly displaced people can use their skills and talents to move to secure futures. Refugees have skills, but lack opportunities Refugees are doctors, engineers, skilled trade workers, software developers, and more. Many refugees have marketable skills, yet find themselves in countries where they don't have the right to work locally and are locked out of international skilled migration systems. By engaging governments, refugee-serving organisations, the business sector, and local communities, we’re creating safe, legal pathways that enable displaced people to move for work, resume their careers, and rebuild their lives with dignity. Proud of Sydney #TamilAustralian Jiva Parthipan and @starttsnsw (NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors) who will be a part of this biennial prestigious world event Biennale of Sydney. (Jiva in right corner in yellow shirt) "rīvus" 12 March – 13 June 2022 Rivers, wetlands and other salt and freshwater ecosystems feature in the 23rd Biennale of Sydney (2022), titled rīvus, as dynamic living systems with varying degrees of political agency. Indigenous knowledges have long understood non-human entities as living ancestral beings with a right to life that must be protected. But only recently have animals, plants, mountains and bodies of water been granted legal personhood. If we can recognise them as individual beings, what might they say? rīvus invites several aqueous beings into a dialogue with artists, architects, designers, scientists, and communities, entangling multiple voices and other modes of communication to ask unlikely questions: Can a river sue us over psychoactive sewage? Will oysters grow teeth in aquatic revenge? What do the eels think? Are the swamp oracles speaking in tongues? Do algae reminisce about the days of primordial soup? Are waves the ocean’s desire? The Biennale of Sydney is one of the leading international contemporary art events. It plays an indispensable role in Australia’s engagement with the world, and a meaningful role in the life of the nation. The Biennale presents the most dynamic contemporary art from around the globe in venues across Sydney with exhibitions that ignite and surprise people, sparking dialogue, cultivating connections and inspiring action through meaningful, shared arts experiences. #LearnTamil on Wednesday We are not gushing over a politician 🙄 we are celebrating 👏 the success of a woman of colour against all odds. Most googled Tamil word in August..... #சித்தி - #Chitthi / Sitthi We thought we'll feature a Tamil word that the US and the world got to know recently in August thanks to US VP elect Kamala Harris! While we are aware of her short comings - after all, which politician has an absolutely flawless track record - we champion a woman of Tamil and Jamaican heritage taking a place of high office in the world arena. சி - Chi / Si Tamil consonant சித்தி - Chitthi / Sitthi means mother's younger sister, or father's younger brother's wife. It has now come to be used generally to refer to aunty - older woman. Kamala Harris put her Tamil roots on centre stage by referring to her aunties in Tamil when she accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president mentionimg how important family is to her. #ProudToBeTamil #TWDGtamil #TWDGlanguage #TamilIdentity #TamilDiaspora #TamilHeritage #TamilCulture #TamilLanguage #Tamil #TWDGculture   #ancientlanguages #KamalaAunty #KamalaHarrisTamil #POC #PeopleOfColour #WOC #WomenLeaders #TamilsGoingPlaces #TamilsDoingGood #TWDGdiaspora #usvicepresident #TamilChangeMakers #TamilRoleModels #changemakers #TWDGchangemakers #Tamils #TamilAmericans Photo: 4to40 kids portal for parents

#TamilsGoingPlaces #TamilsDoingGood A Tamil at the #BerlinBiennale a prestigious world art event. Sinthujan Varatharajah researcher, essayist, and political geographer looks critically into the aftermath of the 1983 anti-Tamil pogroms and riots in Sri Lanka and the wars and genocide that followed. These led hundreds of thousands of Tamils into exile. For those who emigrated to Europe, divided Berlin was their personal entry point. At the time, the #BerlinWall played a little-known role as a permeable gateway, a transit point Used as a loophole of survival for many then “Third World” refugees. A special agreement between East and West Germany enabled refugees to enter through East Germany to settle in the West. In the 1980s, the political cracks in the walls of partitioned Germany became a lifeline of survival for the Tamil. This specific history of the Wall is the point of departure for Varatharajah’s investigations into physical and cultural borders and the memories of displacement of this community. Gathered in the exhibition space at the architectural complex at are different traces of these transit routes, such as oral histories, newspaper clippings, photographs, maps, and other collected materials. Together they form a living archive reflecting on issues of encampment, statelessness, and spatial power, bringing forth a displaced people and their untold stories. Sinthujan Varatharajah was born in a refugee camp in Coburg, Germany in 1985. His parents fled Sri Lanka in the early 1980s, and chose Germany as their destination. #83riots #EastGermany #WestGermany #TamilPogrom #TamilGermans #Refugees #TWDGarts #art #TWDGsrilanka #TWDGdiaspora #TWDGtamil #TamilDiaspora #SriLanka #tamils #srilankantamils #tamildiaspora #endviolence #srilankanwar #nomorewar #endwars #warcrimes #wartribunal #UNHCR #justice #humanrights #srilankapolitics https://universes.art/en/berlin-biennale/2020/affect-archives/sinthujan-varatharajah-1 Images: universes in universe

As a working class first generation immigrant it's great to be recognised for my contribution. Having freedom to speak my truth and to do it through music has helped me speak for those who do not have those privileges. I will continue fight for those who are silenced or persecuted by others.
