#WomenWednesday This week FG|PG brings a figure in design history to shine a light on. Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) The Italian born Brazillian modernist architect. She is known under her many hats as an architect, industrial designer, historic preservationist, journalist, jewelry designer, furniture designer and activist. She is recognized, now, as one of the most prolific women architects of the 20th century and definitely one of the most important and expressive architects of 20th century Brazilian architecture. One of her more impressive achievements is the iconic São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) Given the commission under one condition that the building not block the sites panoramic view of the city below. The local lawmakers felt that the area had become an important urban gathering space as well as a cultural and financial source. Bo Bardis’ solution was simple yet powerful; burying half of structure beneath the vista and the top half raised on massive columns, a striking structure allowing the requisite viewing space. #WomenWednesday. Such a tumultuous juncture we live in and there are some that have pivoted successfully in these unprecedented times to meet the moment. A neighbor to our south has done such a pivot. The Women’s Museum of California @womensmuseum have shed their brick & mortar facility to maintain the integral strength of their organization and are venturing in the steps of museums like the National Women’s Museum of History in Washington DC (facility free for 20 years!): “Over the next months and years, the Women’s Museum will make its home, not within the brick-and-mortar walls of a single facility, but within multiple facilities and across virtual and digital platforms where we will meet audiences where they are – on the internet, and in libraries, schools, parks, and community centers or wherever the community calls us to serve” By adopting the “museum without walls” concept it gives the museum freedom to experiment and explore ways to reach more people and to diversify their audience. We suggest exploring their online offerings and we look forward to seeing “pop-up” exhibits coming to a venue near us soon. The NMWA “is the only only major museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts… The museum brings recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments.” No need to travel to DC, the building itself is currently closed for renovation but they continually offer many online events that you can participate in and many of them are free! #WomenWednesday We love sharing some inspiring and amazing women who have furthered design and architecture. Meet Mildred Friedman (1929-2014) better known to many as Mickey. She served as the editor of Design Quarterly and was the @walkerartcenter design curator for much of the ’70s and ’80s, her work helped bring the Center to international acclaim. From NY Times : “From the late 1960s until she and her husband retired in the early ’90s, she helped conceive and stage imaginative exhibitions on, among other topics, the Dutch avant-garde movement De Stijl, the design process at the Modernist furniture company Herman Miller, the history of graphic design, and traditional and contemporary Japanese arts, crafts and culture, in a show called “Tokyo: Form and Spirit.” She helped energize the careers of numerous young architects, whose work she showcased with drawings, models and often full-size structures installed inside the white-walled Walker. She is widely credited with bringing crucial validation to Frank Gehry with an exhibition in 1986. For more than 30 years, the Walker has offered the Mildred S. Friedman Design Fellowship, a yearlong program for young designers. Mr. Friedman, who is the Walker’s director emeritus, said of his wife: “There was nobody like her, especially among women. She was an inspiration to a whole generation.” We admire her influence and this short social blurb cannot do her immense contributions justice. In the world of biodesign she and her teammate Prof. John Ward have shown that biopigments can be used to dye fabric. They use far less water and will are far less destructive to the environment than current methods used in the fashion industry. Like many of our posts, we can’t give nearly as much coverage as we like; this is just the tip of the iceburg as they say; but FarberFutures and Chieza’s vision of the future being an “intersection of nature, design, technology and society” is one that needs to be focused on for the benefit of all. The growing movement around biodesign, biofabrication and biology-driven solutions will take time and effort from both art and the sciences, but the movement is growing and we imagine we will be seeing it transform all levels of industry in the future. Her Iconic typographic designs have been influential and are permanent fixtures in our cultural lexicon. In her 50 year career, Scher’s designs cross the graphic design gamut. Here at FG|PG we love bringing you #WomenWednesday and sharing people we gather our own inspiration from. Today we focus on the Iraqi-British Grand Dame of Architects, Zaha Hadid (1950-2016), @zahahadiddesign @zahahadidarchitects. She is, as they say, arguably the most famous female architect of her time. She has collected many accolades over her career the most auspicious perhaps is being the first Female architect ever to be awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects Royal Gold Medal (est. 1848) AND the first Female to be given the Pritzker Award @pritzkerarchitectureprize (akin to the Nobel Prize for architects). Hadid’s vision redefined the architectural landscape as we know it. From designing shoes to dazzling buildings like the London Aquatics Center, the Galaxy Soho in Beijing and the Guangzhou Opera house. Her pioneering contributions to the field are vast and awe inspiring. It’s #womenwednesday everybody! Today we go to Baltimore to see how the @bmiatwork Baltimore Museum of Industry pivoted to provide a safe space for exhibition and their outdoor exhibit “Women of Steel”; Part of their “Bethlehem Steel Legacy Project“ Which is set to be a multi-year community experiential engagement and preservation initiative documenting the 125 year legacy that the steelmaking giant Bethlehem Steel gave to Baltimore; influencing and changing the very foundation of the community surrounding the steel mill. As a nod to the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment the museum did a deep dive into the stories of the women who worked at the mill and during the deep culling of all researchable sources Covid-19 hit. Just like that, like in all of our industries, planning an engagement became an exercise in public health. Taking it outside and making it free addressed two of the major challenges facing the local community during the pandemic. Her style concepts and approach to interior design are among the most influential on modern living. Her style touches on all of the senses and espouses well-being, from Ikeas global restaurant designs, to an Ikea collection, restaurants, hotels and heritage brands such as Swarovski, and Waterford Crystal to a Hospital designed for children with special needs. Today finds us on a very incredible day in democracy that happens every 4 years in these United States, Inauguration Day. It’s also #WomenWednesday as we continue giving support and shout outs to female creators everywhere and if you watched the ceremony you may have seen the young woman we are focusing today on, @amandascgorman. Ms. Gorman is a 22-year-old native Angeleno and now is the youngest inaugural poet to have spoken at the transition of presidential power. She joins the ranks among giants like Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Miller Williams, Elizabeth Alexander and more. In 2017, she was named the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States. Some of her accomplishments include gathering a plethora of accolades in writing and has published several books (with more on the way) and she graduated cum laude from Harvard University last year with a degree in sociology. Pokémon has always been a great client and has utilized all of FG|PG's services to the fullest from design, fabrication, graphics, logistics, show services, rental, we’ve covered the gamut with them. Starting in 2015 we helped Pokémon show up big at @Gamestop Expo with a clean easy to navigate display that would be repurposed and reskinned for several shows. In addition we developed a display with a smaller footprint that retained the same aesthetics as the larger display but much more convenient for the smaller shows that Pokémon still needed their presence at. We are finding that #throwbackthursday is becoming really popular with the event industry set. A few of our fans looking forward to looking back each week. This week brings us to our little part in the giant world of Pokémon, it is one of the world’s most beloved media franchises and since its creation 25 years ago, it only comes second behind Nintendo's own Mario empire. @pokemon came to FG|PG in 2015 looking for an exhibit solution they could take to the Gamestop Expo, it had to be easy to ship, light on the drayage, quick to install, simple to update to the latest Pokemon visual, and most of all be a welcoming place for the huge fanbase. Our prize winning design has been at every @Gamestop Expo since. We also were chosen to build an additional smaller booth that went to shows like @ thegamaonline, @ officialpax_ , @licensingexpo , @originsgamefair and @toy_fair to name a few. Sure we can’t gather in person right now but we can easily take concepts like these to virtual spaces so your clients can still have impactful interaction with your product. Our in-house fabricator The Shop @ ShowReady loves to start the week with #metalmonday. We are borrowing their subject this week in our ongoing support for #WomenWednesday. We look at artist Karen Cusolitos (fb @KarenCusolitoArt). Karen studied at Rhode Island School of Design and Massachusetts College of Art and is currently a San Francisco resident. Karen is the founder of American Steel Studios @amsteelstudios, a six acre complex providing affordable workspace to 200+ artists. Her art focuses on the balance between humanity and nature and has been exhibited globally. Karen also is a founding member of Oakland Makers, has positions on two advisory boards and has been awarded the Alameda County Arts Leadership Award. We especially like that she inspired the preservation of 450 tons of steel from the Oakland Bay Bridge making it available to artist for installations in the Bay Area. We are truly inspired by her piece “Crude Awakening” originally seen @burningman and some of its parts are currently residing at the beautiful Reserva do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brazil as an awe-inspiring installation. One more quick note: our connection in a 6 degrees kind of way, Cusolitos has created “Shark!” a piece commissioned by our client @facebook for their lobby atrium in Menlo Park.
