Hey, Look! I’m a double-Master! In 2017 I began taking classes to earn a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design. The whole program took only a year and the classes were paid by my employer. It seemed like a pretty great idea given the general direction of higher ed, and I had nothing to lose. What I didn’t know was what an impact the program would have on my teaching, or the incredible educators I would meet in the process. When I finished, I decided that it might be worth enrolling in the M.Ed program in Instructional Technology and slowly taking a class here and there for professional development. Because I wasn’t on a tenure-line, my job never felt very secure and I knew work in Ed Tech was only continuing to grow. Plus, I really was realizing the need for thoughtful educators in this space. In 2020 when COVID hit, I cannot tell you how happy I was to have not only the technical skills, but the pedagogical know how to transition my classes online. Of course, they weren’t perfect. Thoughtful design takes time, but I was prepared to adapt because of this program. Then in fall of 2020, when I was told that my current position wouldn’t continue for a bunch of reasons that had nothing to do with me, I was grateful that I would finish the M. Ed before my 2020-2021 teaching contract ended. Somehow, last year I managed to finish a second Master’s Degree, be on a grueling job search, secure a new job, teach full-time in person, draft a novel, and parent two kids during a pandemic. It was possible because a lot of people supported me. Especially, my husband who was full-time dad and 3rd grade home school teacher. I’m incredible grateful for my pal, colleague, and professor in the M. Ed program @ashleymont for encouraging me to complete the degree. My new job is with a mostly online graduate program. I don’t know if I would have secured it with out my work at UMaine and all of the learning I did about instructional tech. Even if I had somehow managed it, I’m not sure I would find the teaching as rewarding, or understand deeply the benefits of online I’m so thankful. #gratitude #DoubleMaster #UMaineOnline #WriterLife #ProfessorLife #ThanksMaine

What we are seeing in these photos is called #segregatedice with a mix of #cryosuction . In the winter, when the ground freezes, it’s the moisture/ water content in that soil that freezes. If the ground is moisture heavy it creates ice, which expands. However, while #ice expands, it increases mass in the soil. Ice, being less dense than water, lifts, moves and shifts sediment- so you get mini icebergs that can swell ( #frostheave) the ground up to 50% more then it’s summer mass!! Here, you can actually see the layers that have frozen and the #sediment that has been displaced by the expansion of the ice. This is how some fossils can become unearthed over winters. I woke up this morning feeling discouraged as I looked out the window to see a fresh blanket of snow that had fallen overnight. #thanksmaine I had plans to do my solo long run this morning. After waiting a few hours for the snow to melt and receiving a lil pep talk from Abby over the phone I fInally set out. I'm not going to lie, after the first mile on slushy sidewalks my shoes already had puddles in them and I was not having it at allll. But I simply kept going!
