“I thought everybody had to drink to be in this business,” country singer Keith Whitley said in an interview not long before his death at the age of 33 in 1989. “Lefty Frizzell drank, Hank drank, George Jones was still drinking, and I had to. That’s just the way it was. You couldn’t put that soul in your singing if you weren’t about three sheets in the wind.” Country has always loved an ode to liquor. ”There used to be this place in Texas where some of us would go to drink after we got off work at night. Some people called it a bar, some called it a tavern. The yellow pages, I think, called it a restaurant. We called it home. During the week all of those names probably were appropriate, but on Saturday nights it was a honky tonk. It must have a flashing neon sign that guides the lonely to its doors, as a lighthouse guides a disabled craft during a storm. It has to have a gravel parking lot too small to accommodate all the Saturday night cars so that the leftovers have to park halfway up a nearby grassy knoll. And there must be a juke box. On particularly bad nights the barmaid would slip a quarter in the juke box and play some country music. After a few songs and a few beers we were always in a better mood. By last call, we’d be telling her how pretty her pants were. This was around the mid 1960’s and I remember one particular song. It was titled, inappropriately enough, Close All The Honky Tonks, and Charlie Walker sang it. I think I even remember the jukebox number. I think it was C-7”. GET UP OFFA THAT THING. Yesterday morning, Missy and I went to a big plant sale up in Alpharetta with our friend Michael. We spent most of the day hopping between plant sales and nurseries. I did not expect to buy any records on Record Store Day at all. Yesterday was supposed to be about getting more plants and flowers for our garden. But lo and behold, I managed to find a booth at the plant sale that was also selling records: Tropical Express, who specialize in tropical plants and vintage vinyl out of a storefront in Atlanta. I picked up Quincy Jones’ “Quincy Plays For Pussycats” and “Hot On The One”, unopened and still in shrink, with James Brown performing live in Tokyo over four sides. Not only was this 1964 LP Norma Jean’s debut solo album, it’s also the only album I have of hers in my vinyl collection… for the time being that is. Love all 12 of the tracks on this album, and how incredible to be produced by two amazing talents, such as Chet and Bob. These songs are full of amazing picking, violin and tons of pedal (should I assume it’s Pete Drake???). For the longest time, I always only heard the name, Norma Jean associated with Porter Wagoner, and of course, Dolly Parton, whom replaced her on The Porter Wagoner show. As a country fan, I’m finally intentionally going deeper and discovering Norma Jean is a special and incredible talent in her own right as demonstrated on this record. Have to say visiting #Nashville was a #music dream come true. The museums, the live music everywhere, a buzzing atmosphere, the history, it was an experience of a life time. From award winning chefs, authors, musicians, singers, record label owners, baseball players to members of very famous country music families, I am totally in awe of Nashville, the place and it's people and thank all of them for their southern hospitality. Would encourage any music lover especially if you are a country music fan to go to Nashville. Walking through the Country Hall of Fame Museum to see the instruments the custumes of stars whose music I got to know from collecting #vinylrecords was unbelievable. #NudieCohn suits that I love from first seeing them on stars, on vinyl record covers and his one of a kind car, just incredible! What was your first concert? 🎸 That question is posted quite a bit on social media. For several years I’ve known mine was Oct. 1. 1970, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. I was a young kid, but have clear memories of the event. My parents loaded up the family and headed to Fort Worth to see Porter/Dolly and the Wagon Masters. They performed on a flat bed semi trailer in the parking lot of a drug store. This past week I finally found online the 1970 Wards Cut Rate Drug ad about the concert. Another recent cool discovery- I posted about this concert on a Fort Worth Facebook history page, - the Father of my high school friend @michael_tx41 commented on the post- “We were there and Michael was on my shoulders watching the show”! We had yet to meet each other in school, but Michael and I were at the same show! In 1967, he introduced singer Dolly Parton on his television show, The Porter Wagoner Show. She became part of a well-known vocal duo with him from the late 1960s to the early 1970s.
