Dear Daisy, I need someone to tell me the truth about forgiveness. Growing up in a strict church and with strict parents, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. There was no way I could meet all the expectations and rules enforced on me. Any opportunity I found to rebel, I took it. When we read God’s word, we need to read it several times, many times, to fully understand the meaning of it, and I believe this is especially true for prophecy, things which are foretold to happen before they happen. We often blame our emotions, or “passions,” for things we say or do, things that we later regret. That’s why we tend to view them through a moral lens. We consider some emotions “good” and others “bad”—and we often feel guilty when we experience the “bad” ones. However, the Catechism teaches us that “in themselves passions are neither good nor evil” (1767). In fact, they are absolutely essential to who we are as human beings. Furthermore, “strong feelings are not decisive” in making us moral or holy people (1768). It’s how we react to them-whether we use our reason and will to govern them-that matters. When we experience strong emotions that have the potential to lead us into sin, we shouldn’t be surprised or get down on ourselves. Instead, free of shame, we can acknowledge to the Lord how we are feeling and then ask for his help. In his humanity, Jesus knows exactly what we are going through. Not only is HE OUR MODEL for how to govern our emotions, but HE GIVES US THE GRACE to do it. When we don’t know how to handle our emotions, our first instinct should be to turn to Jesus. We can always count on Him to help us. God, through Isaiah, one of His chosen prophets, is addressing His people to remind them that they are stubborn and would not listen to His warnings. Even though God through His chosen prophets had told His people in advance what would happen to them and to their fathers if they continued sinning against Him, they were stiff-necked and stubborn, refusing to believe anything bad would happen to them. God used Isaiah and Jeremiah to warn them, and His warnings fell on deaf ears. Jehoshaphat knew better than to make the mistakes he made. His troubles began when he joined forces with evil King Ahab. Ahab wined and dined King Jehoshaphat in hopes of securing Judah’s help in an enemy attack. However, God warned Jehoshaphat through the prophet Micaiah that their plans would not succeed. Jehoshaphat’s decision to ignore the message and proceed into battle anyway was thus a willful act of disobedience. Almost at once, he found himself the target for soldiers who mistakenly identified him as Ahab. He could have accepted this deadly fate, because he richly deserved it. But instead, he mustered the nerve to cry out to God, who miraculously saved him. Unfortunately, few believers remember Jehoshaphat’s brazen request for God’s mercy when they fall into sin. Instead of running to God for forgiveness and restoration, their guilt persuades them to run from him — a lingering instinct from the days in the garden. While we must accept the consequences of our mistakes, Jehoshaphat’s predicament shows us that turning to God is always the best recourse. This is still the routine of many “church goers“ today. Going through the motions of expected worship so you can quickly get back to what you want to do. A man named Frank Sinatra sang a song in the late 60s with the chorus phrase: “and I did it my way!” That’s the theme of life for most. People living for the next party or fun event trying to distract themselves from reality while attempting to shut God out and get Him to leave them alone. These people are not happy. They are trying to drown their misery and stay numb while feeding their fleshly desires. They are on a run-away train of pain and misery headed for eternal damnation. It is so hard to watch these people living in darkness. Jesus loves them and wants to spend eternity with them but they reject all He has to offer. In the scripture above, the “stiff-necked” ones that God had just delivered from slavery in Egypt, decided to rebel against God and create their own god to worship. A god that didn’t judge them or tell them what to do. Many try to live life without Jesus, and mange to do so for some time. When they find themselves in a pit of despair, they have a choice to turn to Jesus or stay in the pit forever. Which one will you choose? Peace or pain? Good or evil? Truth or lies? Eternity with Jesus or eternity burning in hell? It has always been your choice. God didn’t turn away from you, you left Him. Jesus forgives you and wants you to choose Him.
