Eight years in rural North Florida. Platano Power t-shirts. So much of my identity has died here. I died to my old self. Not completely, though. That process will take a lifetime to complete. But enough, died, for me to be born again. Born this time, in His Spirit. By no act, glory, or will-power of my own. Today, I listened to another lecture from Grace Community Church about Puritans on the Family by Jeremy Walker. He preached how the Puritans believed that all our comfortable relations, the relationships we have with other people, are reflections of the great reality of Christ in His mercy toward us. Hence, the relation of my husband. I was brought to reflect on who my husband has become in the past eight years of living here together, the shedding of his identity as well, and the resurrection of the Spirit within him, too. It has greatly aided in mine. In our family. Our kids. The reality and truth itself is in Christ… and today I can sense more profoundly- what Christ has taken upon us both. Why we were brought out here. Who we were then. And the solace that we both find outside for His glory, in His garden, that He has allowed us to steward- together. If I can’t drown myself in the multitude, I’ll seek the solace of silence If I can’t find the warmth of an embrace, I’ll soak in the affirmation of words. I’ll take a break from the delusion of pleasure And sit in the classroom of pain. I’ll attend a funeral, and remind myself of why I’m here If I can’t laugh, I’ll take a walk around a park. I’ll soak in the unconditional laughter of kids I’ll go into the woods and appreciate the simple life of a squirrel I’ll take a sunbath and wash off the blues of the night I’ll listen to the soothing waters of the lake And take in the fragrance of wet grass. A lone Gladiola. My first love of flowers, awareness of them, was from a Publix aisle in Miami. We would walk down Biscayne and shop for the week. The salt air was our friend. The few stems were a treat for the week. Along with a package of Cuban merengues. I would eat them on the walk home. We still have the cloth bags Publix released, their first wave effort towards turning green. Now, twenty years later, this is what I think of when I hold my lone Gladiola. She started it all. And this is what Saturday night looks like now. Hosing the porches off. Watering the garden. The air is different. No Cuban merengues. I stand in this one home and yet another resides within me. Her early childhood enjoyed the stability of a functioning family and the freedom to explore her passion for poetry and literature. Her life changed significantly when her father suffered a mental breakdown and her family faced serious financial difficulties. During a season of instability and loneliness , Rossetti’s faith was encouraged and strengthened by the spirituality of the Anglo-Catholic movement in the Church of England. As a young woman, she became an accomplished poet, working within the pre-Raphaelite circle of artists. Her celebrated book, “Goblin Market and Other Poems,” positioned her as one of the most significant poets of her time. She was equally active as a social reformer, devoting her energy to improving the conditions of the poor and homeless. She advocated for the dignity of women and the abolition of slavery. Her experiences in Christian ministry inspired many of her greatest poems. Today, she is most remembered for her poem, “In the Bleak Midwinter,” which was later turned into one of history’s most cherished Christmas hymns. Trusting God everyday means coming to Him and laying down all your weaknesses and pain before Him. All of the inadequacies and things you might be ashamed of, all of the guilt and fears, and trusting that He is God. He is enough. And the Bible promises that He is. That you can bring your worst before Him, and that God in His mercy and sovereignty, will lean towards you. That He turned away from His own Son, I believe, to stoop towards you. Because His call in Scripture is to the weak (Matthew 5:3, 6), the one who doesn’t have enough, or have it all together. Day by day, I wake each morning to this invitation, A reminder that as surely as the sun rises new every day, So are His mercies new every morning. That we all are invited to the fountain. To eat and drink of good food that doesn’t spoil, To lay our burdens before the King, To sit at His table. To know that together we can join The song of creation. John 3:16 is a proof of that. John 3:16 says, ’For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ A song I was taught growing up also says, “Jesus’ love is so high we can never get above it, so wide we can never get around it, so deep we can never get under it.” Meaning no matter how far or high or deep we think we’ve gone or can ever go in sin, we’re still contained within His love. I’d also like to think it to mean if it ever comes to a point where there’s a Grammy award for the most loving person on earth, that person will still only be taking baby steps if compared to Jesus. Hence, the one who can love us better than ourselves is Jesus. Although this truth was revealed to keep us from sinning, all we’ve ever done is the exact opposite of it. “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 Christians should expect trial; we should be resolved that trial is on its way. And when it arrives we should nod our heads knowingly. We should take a breath and brace our shoulders for the impact. Even though trials are to be expected, for those who have been taken through, the expectation does not soften the blow or alter how consuming they can be. We know the pain that constricts our chest, the scattering of thoughts, and how unstable the ground under foot can feel. Trials expose our weakness; our frailty. And that exposing process is painful but it is necessary, because when we are weak He is shown to be all the more strong. When we are incapable, His capability is on full, unbridled display. By the grace of God, we are not mere man experiencing life’s hardships by ourselves. It will not be by our grit or skilled navigation alone that we will be able to endure, but rather a perseverance relying on one thing alone. The truth. The truth that while trials are to be expected, we can be even more confident of the comfort sure to come and the Comforter in whose hands we are in. We are also invited to look forward to the lessons we are sure to learn and await the coming growth of our faith. Which through testing, trying, stretching , and molding, is purified. For even in trial, if God is for us, of what note is it then that all else might be against us? When God Pushes a Pause When the soul is tired God pushes a pause Leading one tenderly With His gentle rod. To stroll in His gardens While in a closet of clothes Never too far To hear every woe.
