My trip to Panama was more than intensive. The IEEE CONVENE 2023 was a 3-days full agenda event, where I had to report to the IEEE Conferences Committee on the current state of IEEE Young Professionals and its operations. Being part of the IEEE leadership today is challenging since many rules change from Privacy and Data Management to Open Science. It stopped being an easy job. Besides the IEEE engineering community, as a member of the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) business and finance community, I contacted my colleagues from Panama to use this opportunity to meet and discuss business expansion opportunities. I still firmly believe that projects can be successful only when we make bridges between those two communities. Here in Panama, the market structure and needs are pretty different compared to Europe. For any business operations expansions, a partnership with local experts is needed. Luckily, I have contacts around the world. So I had the pleasure to meet the WBAF Senator for Panama Arletty Pinel, an amazing superwoman running so many unique programs in this part of the world. Her career path is diverse, with many experiences in nature and social sciences, fundraising and NGOs, and international agencies such as the UN. She has lived in many countries, such as the USA, Brazil, and the UK, helping her better understand cultural differences, the importance of diversification, business models, and market needs worldwide. We found a few topics and common points for collaboration in our short meeting, where engineering and technologies can help to solve challenges in Smart Cities and act as the game changers in urban living experience in the 21st century. The vision of Sustainable development, SDGs, and ESG concept can’t be reached without using technology in the best possible way based on new and sustainable business models.
