When I was a kid, we sustainably gathered every kind of wild food imaginable! Back then I never understood how my dad knew for miles around what grew where, but he did! (When asked, he would just smile and say, “I can smell it on the wind”.🤣) Each year come August, we visited a HUGE wild blackberry patch. Ripe backberries burst when touched in the high heat of the day, so we were up and on our way before sunrise. Once there, we fastened our berry buckets around our waists so that both hands could be free to gather. We went home with gallons, but there was always more than plenty left. In 50+ years since, I have not seen a blackberry patch that could compete with that one—but one came close! On an @oronolandtrust preserve there was a huge, many decades old blackberry patch that covered both sides of a trail, approx 25’ long x15’ wide on each side. It produced delicious berries (first slide), and was beloved by many people, and an important food source for animals and birds. This past fall/winter, OLT embarked on a logging operation and for some reason that I will never fathom, they chose where the blackberry patch was as a staging area for the cut logs! In doing so, this incredible treasure was completely destroyed (see 2nd and 3rd slides). I keep hoping to see signs of renewal but it’s like they were never there at all (herbicide?!) I have spent most of my life out in nature, and I now understand how my father knew where everything was. He had a relationship with those places! We had a relationship with that berry patch for 25 years. I’m sad I could not protect it! I don’t know how to leave someone like you. I finally found the courage to read diary entries from when I attempted to leave an abusive relationship. Many of the words I wrote are like this…. Short, unrevealing, and yet they say so much. There is fear, loss, uncertainty, and trauma in this short note. The waves of sadness, loneliness and anger lasted for years. Occasionally I still feel I’m drowning. I have since been diagnosed with PTSD which I am still coming to terms with. Men’s violence continues to impact victim/survivors for years, if not a lifetime after they leave. O goodie! Another “lovely ornamental flower” turned into invasive monocrop! This is lion’s ear from South Africa (Leonotus leonurus) and someone thought it would be nice in their garden and BAM! Entire fields are now covered in dense stands of these prickly plants. They are very vigorous, seed freely, inedible to animals, and grow so thick that grazing animals won’t even venture into patches. The only way to eradicate is to collect seed heads for disposal and pull the plants (which we do to keep our 4 acres of pasture clean). Family stories - we all have them - and those of us that have been lucky enough to have a wolfhound in our lives seem to have some especially good stories! This photo is from 1970 and features my mom’s oldest brother, David, and her family’s first wolfhound, Digby O’Toole. Grandpa had brought home a wolfhound puppy right after grandma had just had a baby! (Note - she wasn’t a grandma then - just a young mom raising eight kids.). Grandma put her foot down and the oversized eating and pooping machine was sent to live with David for a semester while he was at college. My mom often wonders how he managed in his tiny freshman dorm room. What did his roommate think of the arrangement? How did the school not notice? One thing she knows is Digby loved David…

Our Field Team went back out on a Balmy morning to put these two big blue and beveled panels back after Ryan did some minor repairs to them. These panels had The Most Unusual features added to them by their original creator, a heavy steel frame plus mega rebar across the stained glass panel to join the steel framed sides together. It's hard to describe as we had never seen such a thing done before. Ryan slipped a couple lengths of rubber shims in along one side to stop the frame from pulling away from the stained glass when it was screwed back into the wooden door frame. Done and done and we got to pet their doggo too!
