Gran parte del lavoro vide la luce in sei volumi dal titolo "The rock tombs of el-Amarna". Quando nel 1907 gli archeologi tedeschi del Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft, guidati da Ludwig Borchardt, decidono di indagare nuovamente nella città di Akhenaten, nessuno si aspetta grandi sorprese. Il lavoro riprende esattamente da dove aveva terminato Petrie, ma in un'area più periferica della città. Nel corso degli scavi, viene individuata la bottega principale dello scultore Thutmose, il cui nome era conosciuto grazie a una placchetta d'avorio. Il 6 dicembre del 1912, in una stanza murata della bottega torna alla luce la più grande collezione di arte amarniana. Venti prototipi di calchi in gesso in vari stadi di lavorazione mostrano le abilità dell'atelier di scultura. Su tutti spicca il magnifico busto dipinto di Nefertiti, ricvato da un unico blocco di calcare. L'altissima qualità della scultura fa pensare che si tratti sicuramente di un'opera di Thutmose in persona. The Church of San Bruzio The dilapidated church of the monastery of San Bruzio, nestled within an olive grove at the slopes of the village of Magliano (Grosseto, IT), has piqued my interest over time. Gradually transitioning into a tourist destination, it attracts visitors intrigued by the medieval remnants of the apse area amidst the verdant landscape. Contemplating its origins raises questions regarding its potential emergence as a focal point for the population subsequent to the abandonment of the nearby colony of Heba. Future systematic research may provide comprehensive insights into the site's historical development. Today, what remains is a picturesque panorama of ruins, featuring the exposed octagonal drum over the altar, portions of the transept, and the craftsmanship evident in the capitals supporting erstwhile architectural features. Notably, these capitals exhibit striking resemblances to the ornamental motifs found in San Rabano, Sant'Antimo, and the Abbey of the Ardenghesca. Furthermore, one can discern the nave of the religious complex, subject to stratigraphic investigation by the Superintendence in previous years. Cat Poster Dress, London, 1968. A paper dress designed by Harry Gordon using a large photographic blow-up of a cat photograph. "A new enthusiasm for posters in the late 1960s prompted the creation of the "Poster Dress." Posters were seen as a quick, cheap and a temporary way to decorate domestic interiors. Being an inexpensive (priced at under three dollars) fast-changing and disposable fashion item, the poster dress reflected this new enthusiasm. The packaging for this dress suggests that when you tire of wearing it "...why not...Cut open all the seams and hang it on your wall as a poster...or cover pillows...or as your collection grows, sew them together to make a bedspread or curtains or a table-cloth...". Although these dresses were quite sturdy, were treated for fire and water-resistance, dress wearers were constantly protecting themselves against lit cigarettes and spilled drinks. #WonderfulThings È il novembre del 1898, e Howard Carter sta lavorando per conto dell'Egypt Exploration Fund, oggi Egypt Exploration Society., a Deir el-Bahari, nel tempio funerario di Mentuhotep II, Una mattina, mentre si accinge a raggiungere il sito, il suo cavallo sprofonda con una zampa nel terreno, rivelando l'accesso ad una tomba inviolata. Gli operai, eccitati dalla scoperta, danno i giusti meriti al cavallo di Carter, soprannominando l'apertura bab el-hosan, "porta del cavallo". L'archeologo inglese organizza l'apertura in grande stile, sicuro di aver fatto una grande scoperta. Vengono invitati numerosi dignitari e personalità importanti, ma al momento dell'apertura la delusione è palpabile. All'interno dell'unica stanza sono conservati un sarcofago vuoto e senza iscrizioni e una statua di arenaria dipinta avvolta in un drappo di lino. Un pozzo verticale scavato nel pavimento porta ad una piccola stanza sotterranea in cui vengono ritrovate tre modellini di barche in legno e alcuni vasi in terracotta. L'imbarazzo è evidente. Quando Howard Carter entrò per la prima volta nella tomba di Tutankhamon restò letteralmente a bocca aperta; nessuno aveva mai trovato prima di allora una tomba faraonica intatta (quasi n.d.r.). L’abbondanza degli oggetti lasciò tutti stupefatti e allo stesso tempo preoccupati per come dovevano affrontare dal punto di vista scientifico una situazione di questo tipo. Il primo grosso problema fu il consolidamento degli oggetti, poiché il cambio di umidità e temperatura rischiava di danneggiare seriamente soprattutto i manufatti di legno. Ma l’ostacolo più grande si rivelò senza dubbio l’imballaggio e il trasporto degli oggetti al Cairo. Ogni singolo reperto fu avvolto nel cotone e deposto nelle casse. Ne servirono 89 solo per gli oggetti estratti dall’Anticamera! Per il tragitto dalla Valle dei Re al Cairo il Servizio delle Antichità aveva messo a disposizione una chiatta a vapore, ma il problema era il trasporto dal laboratorio, la tomba di Sethi I, al fiume. Le opzioni a disposizione erano tre: cammelli, portatori, ferrovia. La scelta ricadde sulla ferrovia. La distanza da coprire era di circa otto chilometri, ma il problema era che in realtà la ferrovia non esisteva! Le casse furono così caricate sui carrelli e prima di avviare il convoglio gli uomini della squadra posizionarono i primi binari. Man mano che la carovana avanzava, gli operai smontavano le rotaie rimaste indietro e le portavano avanti attraverso una catena di uomini. Furono necessari circa 50 uomini, ognuno con un compito ben preciso: chi spingeva i carrelli, chi smontava le rotaie, chi le trasportava e chi le rimontava più avanti. Tutto il lavoro fu svolto con una temperatura di 40 gradi all’ombra (le rotaie scottavano n.d.r.), su un percorso pieno di curve e pendenze pericolose. Quando Howard Carter incominciò a svuotare la Tomba di Tutankhamon i problemi che si ritrovò ad affrontare furono molteplici. Il più urgente da risolvere, fu trovare un luogo vicino alla tomba da utilizzare come deposito per un primo restauro e consolidamento dei reperti. La soluzione fu la tomba di Sethi II (KV15), situata a circa 200 m dalla Tomba di Tutankhamon e poco visitata dai turisti perché poco appariscente e isolata rispetto alle altre sepolture. Inoltre, l’ingresso era ben protetto dai dirupi sovrastanti e quindi facilmente difendibile dai malintenzionati. Si era infatti diffusa a macchia d’olio la notizia della presenza di oro, tanto oro pronto per essere depredato; ma Carter era di atro avviso. Ottenuto il permesso dal governo egiziano, Carter iniziò lo sgombero dell’Anticamera. Dopo averli fotografati, gli oggetti venivano collocati su una portantina imbottita e trasportati nella tomba di Sethi II. Questo però era il momento più atteso dalla folla di curiosi e giornalisti che era ammassata fuori dalla tomba; tutti aspettavano di vedere il tesoro del faraone e secondo Carter: 📔 "Nella Valle sono state impressionate più pellicole durante quell’inverno (il periodo in cui iniziò lo sgombero della tomba n.d.r.) che in qualunque altro periodo dall’invenzione della fotografia." Lo sgombero dell’Anticamera durò circa due mesi, ma un altro pericolo incombeva sulla tomba: da qualche giorno il cielo era plumbeo e minacciava di scaricare una gran quantità di pioggia, che avrebbe reso la Valle un torrente in piena, allagando di fatto la tomba. Fu in questi giorni che Carter ricevette una strana comunicazione su come allontanare la maledizione del faraone: 📔 “In caso di ulteriori guai, versate latte, vino e miele sulla soglia”.
