Congratulations to our newest graduate...Apollo! He is an 8-month-old Miniature Schnauzer that completed his Advanced Obedience High Distraction training package this past week. His owner originally reached out to us as she was having problems walking him on leash together with his older sister, was having problems with recall under greater distractions, and wanted him to be well behaved regardless of where they went. We are pleased to report that he walks awesome on leash and has become quite the follower. His owner is still working on getting both dogs to be great together, but progress is being made every day. Apollo loves his kennel and is working to perfect his Place command and calmer under greater distractions. He did great on a recent trip to a kids park down by the river - he was one of the calmest, more well-behaved dogs there - many older dogs were lunging and barking. He did well on his field trip to the Bass Pro Shop where he explored climbing in pontoon boats & kayaks, riding the glass elevator, practicing his long down stays in the midst of greater distractions, explored the waterfall bridge, giant stuffed bear, and fish aquarium. He even surprised his owner while he walked next to her with a dropped leash through parts of the store. Welcome to the Always Faithful Dog Training of Omaha alumni family - Apollo! Interestingly I've met 4 types of dog moms 1. The type that puts their dogs needs behind their own but still has an immense quality of care and attention to proactively fulfilling their dogs hierarchy of needs daily and build it into their life to make it easy, reliable, and consistent. Approaches behavior change with a holistic process by integrating pack principles into our human life and using balanced communication to address the root causes of dysregulatation 2. The type that puts their dogs need first and are Willing to suffer just to make their dog "happy" and comfortable all the time... (even though the dogs behavior sucks) this is usually your positive reinforcement and rewards-based dog mom stuck in the cycle of ineffective training to make themselves feel good about "training".... you know the "snack leaders not pack leader" and anti-corrections, anti-dominance, anti-alpha people 3. The type that posts on Facebook asking how to keep her dog from pottying inside and destroying the house when she's at work but can't be bothered to give them a potty break every 4-6 hours because dogs "should be able to hold it all day" and refuses to use a crate or take accountability/responsibility for her dogs behavior. Considers rehoming instead of training because the dog is "just too much"... feels bad about training as a whole but willing to try a bark collar. Just putting bandaids on the issues she doesn't like 4. The type who have read about dominance and alpha theory and pack work, and tried implementing it in the past with being overly BIG and HARD with their dogs. In a pack, there is a clear social hierarchy, with roles and responsibilities that ensure the pack's survival and success for food These instincts are rooted in their behaviors, such as hunting, guarding, and caring fo the younger wolf, These pack instincts show up in various ways. Look at how your dog views its owner, often looking at their human families as part of their pack and can display behaviors indicating loyalty, protectiveness, and cooperation. Hence , you should always let it know where you stand in the hiarachy. They may follow their "pack leaders" around, seek their approval, and work to create peace within your household. Beans was adopted by his loving family after @mainlineanimalrescue rescued him malnourished and restored his health. Since Beans was working through medical rehab he was very gentle to start, but once he regained his energy began showing aggressive behavior to new individuals entering their home. We gave Oso a bath today because he was dirty dirty. Oso is Approximately 7 1/2 months. Look at this massive chest on him! Look at his forecast arm too! Give him another 1 yr of growth, he going to be massive animal. Time to get him in some "bite" training and call back training for a better handle., I would hate to be the "idiot" to break into my yard or house with him coming after you leading the pack with him. His coat is white as snow from proper nutrition with herbs and oils for healthy skin and coat. I am pretty proud momma of this spoiled & rotten brat but his heart loves his family 🥰🥰🥰 This pup get tons of exercise in the pen that he is just all muscle. Not ounce of fat on him. Daycare and dog walkers can be a lifeline for many dog guardians but so many do it badly. It’s not an exaggeration when I say 90% of the dogs I work with who struggle with reactivity towards other dogs have come from a daycare or group walk environment where their needs have not been met & their communications ignored or misunderstood. Most dogs (if sociable) prefer playing 1 on 1 with another dog. That way they can read their cues, respond accordingly etc and then take a pause when appropriate. When done well a dog should come happy, relaxed (NOT exhausted) and with no issues. If they’re becoming excessively barky or struggling with lead frustration or reactivity something is going wrong. It can be immensely annoying to have a dog that barks and barks and barks and… The spontaneous reaction is often to yell at it to shut up, or say “no” or “silent” or “stop”. Is that a good strategy? Not really. Your dog will think you’re barking too! It rarely helps the dog to calm down. Try the tips above and be surprised how well it works. There’s NEVER any need to punish or yell at your dog.
