Now my third visit to the stunning Shawnee National Forest, and I am convinced that this place will never get old. It is an ancient landscape, having escaped glaciation during the last Ice Age, with dolomite and sandstone glades, outcrops, and formations that have eroded over millions of years. It's an alligator lizard - specifically, a Southern Alligator Lizard, Elgaria multicarinata, found next to a damp piece of thick oak tree bark after some recent rain. Wikipedia says "The southern alligator lizard frequently eats western black widow spiders, and has demonstrated an immunity to the spider's potent venom." Interesting! Last week we got to spend the week at the beach. I find it interesting that the beach can be associated with peace. The sound of waves can be calming and even lull us to sleep, but the reality of the shoreline that it is harsh and unrelenting. The waves push and pull endlessly against your body and can send you tumbling. The shells we collect as beautiful keepsakes are the broken homes of soft bodied creatures that were probably devoured. Strange little alien-like lifeforms wash ashore and are stranded, betrayed by the wind and the waves that carry them. There is so much to look at and discover. Our big adventures included a dolphin tour where we saw a newborn dolphin. The guide said he’d never seen a baby dolphin so small and believed it had just been born. We also kayaked out in the bay. S. wanted to kayak in his own kayak and I’d found a couple of new-to-us kayaks for paddling, but we hadn’t tried them out yet. So setting my small child in the big water on a windy day felt like it could have been a parenting mistake. I brought a rope in case I’d have to tow him in at some point. But after a few minutes of getting used to the bigger new boat he was off and we had fun chasing ibis and poking at big clumps of oysters. He even saw a stingray (I missed it). We had friends come to stay with us for part of the week and it was those friends that found the squishy lump of moving slime in the sand that unfurled into a Sargassum Nudibranch when put in a bucket full of sea water. I’d never seen a nudibranch before and loved getting to watch it up close. This page would not be “done,” but I’m trying to commit to a weekly practice which means it will have to be done enough so I can move on. I find that my pencil can never keep up with all the things my mind would like to have it draw, and negotiating that with myself might be on of the bigger things I learn about if I can keep this up. #weekinwonder #naturejournal #naturejournaling #naturenerd #galveston #galvestonisland #illustrationartists #sketchbook #lastweekinwonder

Home... What does that mean for me? I ask myself that often. Especially since I’m getting older. My birthplace doesn’t feel like home. Is there THE place? Home is a feeling… For me, home means surrounded by lovely people with whom I feel connected from the heart; being part of a community with like-minded people. Beauty is home, it is very important to me, as is creativity. Kindness, respect, tolerance. Wild nature, art and culture. And when I can bake and cook - when I can live my passion, all that is home for me. It hurts terribly when I have to leave the places where my soul feels at home. But I guess I’m kind of a butterfly...🙃 I love to make new experiences and want to explore new areas. We found our fuel for the 2024 @CitNatChallenge! @waspmania's nature nerding got us an awesome and much-needed meal generously provided by @cookstortas 💜 100 nature explorer kits assembled and ready for the CNC's biggest year yet! (BTW check my link in bio for free museum admission, parking, and general iNaturalist nerddom April 27 10:00-12:30) 690+ cities, 52 countries, all SEVEN continents including Antarctica thanks to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina! The whole of the country of Botswana! 200 NEW cities from India! Stay tuned for an Instagram live that crosses continents at @citnatchallenge to wrap up the biggest CNC with a bang! This #CityNatureChallenge is gonna be lit and while we keep caveating that we'll play it by ear and be chill - we won't. Gonna spam the heck out of @FerallPeople during the City Nature Challenge! Proper CNC plan post coming soon, but between the museum, the San Dimas Experimental Forest, and @regenvillage we'll try to get in superfund sites, a desert trip maybe, and in the true spirit of the CNC: those beautiful poppies, mini lupines, black sage and other plants behind Cook's Tortas on the CNC map! A fun spring break @rlnaturecenter moment that was taken during our #insect camp. I love these events. They are so much fun, and I love speaking about insects. I used to be deathly afraid of most, but as I walked through life, I became interested in #insects and #arachnids to the point of obsession. I love teaching kids about their importance and how they live and how they are vital to the planet's survival. Sometimes, you just have to get a big crazy and become an #insects yourself. Okay, maybe not like they did in the sci-fi classic #thefly1958. But using bug glasses can be just as cool if not a bit safer than using a teleporter that merges human DNA with a Fly that got trapped or in this case an Ant and a Praying Mantis or Dragonfly. My latest art piece for #foundry class. I have been working on this for a long time. Since after Spring Break and during. This was a very hard project to do. I did another #nauticalpiece to tie into my previous #project. This was a two for one. I thought of making a #shipinabottle, but inspiration took hold to make it a #messageinabottle as well. Since I am a #naturalist and an #naturenerd, I thought about doing a piece that spoke volume. This was the result. I used a mixed media piece that involved a juice bottle that looked all dilapidated. A rack like looked like a traditional wine bottle holder. In side the boat sits in an ocean made of epoxy with sandpaper bottom with beads, Legos, trash, metal, plastic, and crayfish exoskeleton sheds. This also has glue mixed with the epoxy to look like foam. I also added some beach combed plastic with tube worms as well. Around the lid, I added a plastic bottle ring. I wanted to turn something pretty and tradional and add my own spin on it and wanted it to speak volumes. This has become part of a much larger body of naturalist works. I love using mixed media and trash in some of my works. Nature is just a wonderful thing but in this piece the truth comes out and shows how humans have messed up in some cases.
