Mother’s Day is coming up and I won’t be able to celebrate with my mom which is an unfortunate side of effect of being a San Francisco transplant 😭. Knowing my mom, her perfect celebration would be cooking food for the fam and stuffing us with a dessert she recently learned to make. The 90s kid in me is so content 🥹. I had the pleasure of testing the #zwcargoskirt pattern for @the_sew_sew This pattern has endless zipper potential which is why it struck me initially. It’s the first time I let hardware guide the project idea which was a fun change. I made a few mods to the pattern: took in the waste, and made zipper welt patch pockets (lined for stability as the metal Zippers are heavy) and also added a zipper facing to the CF. Happy launch day of the Zero Waste Cargo Skirt pattern by @the_sew_sew! #zwcargoskirt ✂️ ✨ Back in December I tested this pattern for Cindy, and in the past 3 months I’ve probably worn the finished skirt more often than the amount of times I’ve worn ANY skirt in general over the past 3? 5? 10? years — so that’s already a big win in my book! I chose the following options: - short version - elastic waist - front zipper - cargo pockets My modifications: - lengthened with 3,5 cm (1 ⅜”) to match my zipper length - adjusted the cutting layout slightly to match the width of my fabric - used the scraps left over from my adjusted layout to make straps for the cargo pockets - omitted the buttons on the cargo pockets because of those straps - added topstitching along both sides of the front zipper I used a bonded fabric from my stash: it has a softshell-like touch, but doesn’t have the typical brushed inside like a true softshell. I believe it’s one of the fabrics I bought at one of the Schoeller Factory outlets in 2018. It’s quite a stiff and thick fabric, which made me a bit nervous about the amount of hip ease when added up with the difference between my waist and hip. I didn't want this 38cm of total waist ease to become too bulky around the elastic, as this reduction is about 35% compared to my body measurements. But it worked out great after al! It definitely feels chunky and heavy, but not in a way where it feels uncomfortable or looks awkward. So we’re all good! The zipper and the rectangular rings used for the pocket straps are also all from my stash. Fun fact: I harvested those rings from one of my old pairs of @lasportivagram climbing shoes once they were beyond resoling a few years back ✨ It was a very straightforward and easy-to-follow make, and a very fun and satisfying a quick sew! 🌼 Zero Waste Cargo Skirt 🌼 Get your measuring tape and calculators out because the #zwCargoSkirt from @the_sew_sew is out today! I helped test this pattern back in December and it’s been tough keeping quiet about it till the release. It’s so fun, especially if you’re a fan of choose-your-own-adventure patterns. Cindy provides options for a mini and maxi length but due to the nature of the ZW pattern, you can adjust it easily to any length that suits you. You can mix and match elastic or paper bag waistbands, three pocket variations, plus welt pockets, and zip or non zip fronts. So many options 🤩 The pattern is super size-inclusive because you make it to your own measurements. // details: - View A in the short length with the A2 cargo pockets - Lengthened to 20” - Lengthened pockets 1” - Lowered pockets 1.75” // fit: - The pattern at the time of testing called for 4” of ease in the hip. I found this to be a bit slim for my ✨plentiful✨ hips, so I’d recommend adding a bit more ease if you want more room to maneuver. Luckily, this is really easy to do with this pattern! // fabric/notions: - Midweight cotton twill from @blackbirdfabrics - I did not anticipate how camouflaged the pocket would be in this outrageously awesome print 😅 I swear, the pockets are there! 🤣 - Separating zipper from @wawaksewing Worn with my trusty @fridaypatterncompany #SquareNeckTop in sandwashed cotton, also from @blackbirdfabrics. a zero waste cargo skirt! Happy release day to Cindy @the_sew_sew ! It’s been quite some time this beautiful skirt was in testing and I was very lucky to be on the testing team! I am so happy that this smartly designed pattern finally gets out in the world! It was my first zero waste pattern, meaning there are no pattern pieces, only detailed instructions that help you design the pieces straight onto the fabric (or in my case in a design program like Illustrator or Inkscape and then transform to projector file). The real win about such patterns is that they can be truly tailored to your own measurements and also if you choose a fabric according to your pattern pieces, you have zero leftovers. How satisfying is that! The #zwcargoskirt offers a ton of options: Two views, two lengths and 3 pocket options! I chose the zipper front, long view and flat pockets, plus two welt zipper pockets. Normally I would go for the cargo pockets but the fabric I wanted to use could only fit the flat ones. The zipper is a two-way zipper as per the instructions suggestion, in order to have a wider range of movement. Indeed, although you can still walk with the zipper fully zipped, the two-way zipper offers a lot more ease. The skirt construction is not as easy as it looks! It has a few technical difficulties and is definitely a skill builder, especially the zipper view and the two welt zipper pockets, because every misalignment shows. I have to mention the super clean insides (thank you flat felled seams), which is very satisfying! I used a fabric I had in my stash that seemed like a perfect choice because the dimensions matched exactly my skirt templates, and also because it was not too crisp and not too fluid, probably a suiting fabric. I really like the result, although the fabric frayed so much that it made flat felled seams a very challenging task. If you don’t know what a pattern tester is, it basically means that you make a garment before it’s public- giving feedback on instructions, fit, and overall garment construction to help the designer improve as much as they can! This can be a very vulnerable process for the designer- but also rewarding for their release! The ZW Cargo Skirt is a zero to minimal waist skirt pattern with multiple waistband options, lengths, and pockets- all remaining true to creating as little fabric waist as possible. My personal favorite was the paper bag waist with toggles and elastic cording- it feels extra sporty with my cotton shirting. Zero waste sewing is not for the faint of heart. There is a lot of prep work when it comes to formulas and ensuring it can transfer to your material. But the effort is worth it when you get to the final result.
