#memademay2024 #memademay #sewnshownseated #seatedmakeschallenge2024 @thewheeliestitcher @lolieya . I am wearing for the first time my new #bryerskirt a fabulous #zerowastesewingpattern by @lizhaywood3754 …. I ended up piecing the bottom of the front skirt as I did not have enough length of this stash fabric…. And I am quite pleased with the effect of piecing equilateral triangle which when the darts were sewn kind of look more like mountains! I think this skirt has a really cool shape and a clever large pockets and button closure of the front waistband … I hand appliqué the hearts on as the fabric was also a little moth eaten! A #magamminimalmay project in lots of ways #magamsewalong thank you @suestoney @sewing_in_spain @lizhaywood3754 … this is yet another fun challenge! Also wearing my latest #stokxcocojacket @stokxpatterns which is fabulous for sitting down …it fits so well and covers the back without getting in the way… and again my red merino wool #stokxcarlatop made me very happy #sewover50 #sewover50may

Hey everybody—I just wanted to give you all an update and a great big THANK YOU for your support for my fundraiser this past weekend. Together we raised $600 for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (@thepcrf). From Thursday through Sunday, I received 60 orders for the #zwvestfriendpattern and my store made $556.40 on the sale of those patterns. I kicked in the extra for a grand total of $600 going to support children in Gaza. The donation was allocated to PCRF’s Gaza Relief and Recovery campaign that is explained on the third slide. Your interest in my pattern means the world to me and your willingness to focus your craftiness in support of 🍉 shows me that as a creative community we really can make an impact if we come together! Thanks again all! I cannot wait to see what you create! #vestfriendsforpalestine #zwvestfriendpattern #sewistsofinstagram #zerowastepattern #zerowastesewingpattern #zerowastesewing

I feel like an Easter egg😅🐣💛 @victoriakonash released a bog variation called the #katezerowastetop and I thought this yellow Swiss dot fabric would be perfect. Completed the ensemble with a #maxineskirt by @janetceleste. I find sewing bog designs very, very satisfying. Think this top will get a lot of wear although truthfully I don’t know how often I’ll wear them together. #isew #sewing #sewingproject #imakemyclothes #isewmyownclothes #zerowastesewingpattern #madewithmood #imakemyownclothes #memade #memadeeveryday

◼️◻️◼️◻️ ◻️◼️◻️◼️ ◼️◻️◼️◻️ ◻️◼️◻️◼️ //Pattern: #selfdrafted zero-waste pattern. 1. Two yards of fabric. 2. Cut it in half. 3. Memory pressed the top for a waistband, first 1/2” then 1 3/4”, to fit 1 1/2” elastic. 4. Added pockets, made from other scraps, 3-4ish” down from the top of the waistband. 5. Sewed up the sides. 6. Stitched the waistband with a gap. 7. Inserted elastic. 8. Closed up the gap. 9. Top stitched the waistband. 10. Hemmed to desired length. I tried a few different lengths, and ended up at a skirt that’s slightly shorter than I usually like for a midi, but I think it balances the stiffness of the fabric well. //Fabric: Carolina Gingham by @robertkaufman from @madewithharmony. It’s a little stiffer than I had imagined for this skirt; however, I’ve made several pieces with Carolina gingham and it softens real nice with wear, so I have hopes that it’ll calm down over time. Hello fellow sewists! With #memademay underway I know many of us are thinking about how we participate this year in this fun month for sharing our handmade wardrobes with the sewing community while also keeping our attention on the people of Palestine. With that in mind, if you want to try out a new pattern, I’m sharing my #zwvestfriendpattern for $10 (over 40% off) with code MMM10 through Sunday May 12 with ALL PROCEEDS GOING TO @thepcrf (Palestine Children’s Relief Fund). It’s a small incentive to put a little money where it really matters now and create something beautiful, functional and zero waste at the same time. Link to my shop is in my bio. I will share total proceeds and donation info at the beginning of next week! Tag me and use #vestfriendsforpalestine so I can shout out your support. I needed another knitting book like I need a hole in the head but…. I fell in love with the Kite sweater from @norahgn latest book Knit, Pleat, Repeat. An absolutely gorgeous book and I’m not sorry it’s in my collection. Used @berrocoyarn Remix Light. Also really love this soft yummy yarn. I’ve wanted to work with it for years. Paired with the Zero Waste Pant block from @birgittahelmersson book Zero Waste Patterns using a tencel noil. I made a medium which fits fairly well. I do need to shorten the crotch by a good two inches. I’m pretty happy with both👍🏻💙 #iknit #knittingproject #memade #memadeeveryday #imakemyclothes #imakemyownclothes #knittingaddict #isew #isewmyownclothes #sewingproject #stashbusting #knittinginstagram #knitting #zerowastesewingpattern

My first attempt at a zero waste pattern and I absolutely love it! ♻️ 👕 This is the #zerowasteshirt from @birgittahelmersson fantastic #zerowastesewing book. As part of #lastsewiststanding2024 I'm thinking about how my stash also includes (many many many) sewing books, most of which I've never actually made a pattern from. So this make is a first on two accounts. Compared to regular sewing patterns this was a total mind bender. Cutting out was an odd experience but WAY faster than laying out a conventional pattern. I really enjoyed skipping the pattern piece Tetris and fretting I usually do. I've also somehow made a shirt with no side seams and a perfectly fitted a sleeve from a slash into a rectangle. This is pure bananas/black magic but it works! The fabric was the leftovers from my Helena wrap dress, and is a scrumptious pure linen from @edinburghfabrics . The piece I had was slightly shorter than the pattern called for, so I just cut the body section a little shorter. That turned out more cropped than I fancied so I pieced together an extra band to go round the bottom and stuck it on. Makes a nice design feature and avoids the dreaded belly draughts 🤣 Other hacks I made were to add a pocket and I hemming the sleeves on the outside for a cuff detail. I finished it with some funky buttons and a sew on patch. I still think it's come out quite boxy utilitarian but I'm enjoying the bowling shirt vibe this has now with those additions. Construction was very fast and, with the exception of the back facing instructions, very straightforward. Special thanks to @apple_franca for tips on how to manage the back facing! I went extra fancy and French seamed everything. I'm so delighted by the #sewingguts on this in one of the pics I'm wearing it inside out to show how pretty that facing detail is. Overall I'm very impressed with this pattern and it's a great way to use up remnants as well as be more economical with cutting a fresh project. I can see this shirt getting a lot of wear in the summer, either on its own or as a cover up/overshirt. As an over shirt this is giving me mechanic Barbie vibes and I'm here for it 🤣

Spiderman and I are off to a kid's birthday party. That level of social will EXHAUST me, but it'll be lovely too. I'm loving the cooler weather, getting to break out some of my cosy jumpers I haven't worn in months. I'm still blown away that zero waste hoodies exist. How awesome! I can't even remember the pattern details for the jumper, but I know they're in the caption when I first made it. Been very out of habit with documenting makes, but I’m trying to get back into the swing of things! This is the #lwanorak by @the_sew_sew that I made over the winter holidays (verrry out of habit with documenting, as I said). I can’t remember what size I made but I think it was probably 00/0 and it’s the cropped view. I buddy-sewed it with my partner (👉🏼 you can see both of ours in progress if you swipe through), which was really fun to do! I loved the low-waste construction as it was very neat to see it come together and I think it makes for a great boxy fit. I ended up making pattern pieces rather than measuring/marking directly on the fabric though as I find it easier and it will save me time when I make this again in the future. Speaking of making this again, I might skip the grommets and elastic cord and just do elastic casings in future—the wrist cuff cords annoy me sometimes. I used a medium-weight, water-resistant tech fabric from @oursocialfabric which worked great but I wish I had used something thinner for the pocket bags as it made the front flap seam extremely thick. Sewing welt pockets was a great new skill to learn though! I’ve worn this jacket a bunch in the past few months and it’s been perfect for going on runs, especially during the rainy spring season. #vancouversews #sewistsofinstagram #millenialsewing #sustainablesewing #memadewardrobe #imademyclothes #sewnbyme #sewsewsew #lowwastesewing #zwsewing #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern

#waiwot I’ve made continuous bias binding following the instructions in a pattern. It also says to store it until needed (in later stages of the pattern) on an old spool. Even though I used a larger sized old spool it is somewhat overwhelmed! In honor of #marchscrappiness, I’m sharing my most recent make, the #crossovercardigan by @openstudiopatterns. It’s a great pattern that can be worn two ways and it combines knit and woven fabric. This cardigan has so many possibilities to be a #scrapbuster and #zerowaste pattern. I used up scraps from other projects for the two front panels overlapping in the same direction and sewed together using an overlock stitch. I even incorporated a broken zipper, which gives it an edgy detail. Details: -Crossover cardigan by #openstudiopatterns -I made size 2 and enclosed seams, I also shortened the pattern by 4 inches all around and shortened the sleeves by two inches -Main fabric for arms and back is modal from @iseefabric, linen for shoulders is @merchantandmills from @oakfabrics and the scraps are various knits and wovens from @pdxsewingstudio, @moodfabrics and #iseefabrics -last picture is me wearing it on a recent trip with a hacked #shinesaxistank and my favorite me made #merchantandmills linen pants also hacked from #mimigtiffanypattern #hansonhandmade #selfcaresewing #memadeeveryday #wearart #fiberart #imademyclothes #imakemyownclothes #memade #sewfun #handmadewardobe #bernina #bernina1008 #artforeveryday #isewmyownclothes #handmadeclothing #youcanhackit #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #lowwastesewing #lowwaste #iseefabricscraps

I present... the Eura Dress, or the tunic made with 3 cuts and 7 seams. It took me a bit to puzzle out the pattern, but now it might be my go-to tunic layout. There's not a four sided underarm gusset in sight here, and that really made my day! This dress can also be made with zero waste. If I had allowed for seam allowance on the selvedge edge, mine would have been, but I didn't and then had to trim the other side piece down to match. Pattern is based off of Iron Age grave finds from Eura in Finland. This project is not meant to be HA though. Now that I've gotten this far, I'll be making a few modern alterations so this can be worn as a summer dress. ☀️ #euradress #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #historicalsewing #historybounding #scagarb #ironageclothing #linendress

Another sunny Sunday in Otepoti Dunedin, another whistle stop photo shoot on the way to the gym. I finished my #PythagorasDress yesterday and just HAD to go to the same location where Kathryn @otepotisews had photographed one of hers! This is a very clever design, and if you follow Kathryn's very clear and helpful YouTube videos, it's very straightforward to make. If you get ahead of yourself and don't direct your daughter very well in taking your cross back measurement, you get a bit of a racer back. My workaround for that was to open up the CB seam a little and trim to match the front straps. I then applied the armhole binding pretty snugly to pull in the armhole a smidge and it worked out just fine. I cut my skirt length to be 110cm, which I liked, so left it. Instead of using the widest bias strip for ties, I used it to create the walking vent I decided to leave in my CB seam. Pic 2 shows all my mods to the base pattern, and pics 3 and 4 were just cool silhouetted shots because it was the wrong time of day for the sun angle, but isn't our harbour pretty? Pic 5 and 6 - I absolutely HAD to #PoseLikeThePatternModel Pic 7 shows the pockets. The only thing I had to search for while sewing this up was to confirm that the armhole cutouts form one pocket, and the (cearly labelled) triangle cutout forms the other. I also used selvedge from the sliver of unused fabric to stay my neckline, which I eased onto it. I don't know if anyone else besides me has had a go at this yet, but I HIGHLY recommend it! Kathryn has done a fantastic job of creating a beautiful #ZerowasteSewingPattern and is very generously sharing how to make it yourself with really clear videos of the entire process - thanks Kathryn!!! #SewOver50 #SewOver50March #so50SustainableSewing #SustainableSewing #so50Dresses #ISewMyClothes #ItHasPockets #nzsews #sewnz #SewistsOfInstagram

I definitely will get modelled photos of my jacket skirt, but meanwhile, here's the next project I was just dying to dive into! This is a very cool #ZerowasteSewingPattern called the #PythagorasDress by the very clever Kathryn @otepotisews My fabric is a drapey, heavyish synthetic, which I was given by a woman helping to rehome the stash of her late friend. I wanted a dress that could be worn alone or layered and this fit the bill. It doesn't conform as well to my shape as a lighter, drapier fabric would, so I've added a couple of fisheye darts in the back, and have plans for bringing in the waist a little as well. I highly recommend watching Kathryn's youtube videos - she explains it all really well! Pic 2 - the plan chalked onto my fabric. I used every one of those measuring tools. Pic 3 - to get the necessary 45 degree angle I lined up my quilting ruler along a stripe and used my metre rule to draw the line. This works, but as the quilting ruler is not very big, there's a risk of the line being off. The large black handled scissors in these photos were my Mum's. When she moved into a rest home a few years ago, I was given her sewing box. She didn't sew other than basic mending, and I have long been the family mender, but she had bits and bobs. I remember these scissors from childhood, they were known in the family as the "Big Scissors" and at a family get together last week I asked my siblings if they remembered the Big Scissors, and they did! I recently got them sharpened (probably for the first time ever), and they're back in use. #SewOver50 #SewOver50March #so50SustainableSewing #waiwot #ItsNotWasteUntilYouWasteIt #SewistsOfInstagram #ISewMyClothes #nzsews #sewnz

This zero waste cropped top was the perfect pick-me-up after the long-drawn-out, laborious tussle with my last make. It came together very quickly: a couple of days to design and a couple of days to sew. This was initially intended as a drop shoulder blouse with longish sleeves but then I came across a post by Varsha of @closet_karmaa who made herself a light, sleeveless, drop-shoulder top for the summer by just leaving off the sleeves. And I thought that's what I should do, too, coz she's right, summer's coming. It also meant that I could use up this fabric that's been in my stash for a while now. The fabric is a lightweight cotton bought online during the pandemic days, when the fabulous fabric bazaars of Delhi were closed. It carries a special memory... In the middle of the 1st wave of the pandemic I had managed, with great difficulty, to get on a flight to be with my mum after her brain surgery. One morning, when after a tremendous struggle, she had begun to move towards some kind of normalcy, I sat with her and together we browsed and chose a bunch of fabrics from an online store. I was really happy she was able to do this because it's always been my mum and I off on a Sunday morning for a long mooch in the markets of Delhi, we'd break for a 'South Indian' lunch, and by the time we got home we'd have a nice little fabric haul among other stuff. The design is simple: mandarin collar, drop shoulder, cropped length, curved hem with facings which give it a nice weight, godets in the side seams (supposed to be in the back as well but I forgot while sewing). There's also a necktie option to dress it up a bit (pic 3). If I had taken more time with it, I could have probably experimented a bit with the gathers, maybe even tried pleats, but I really needed to make something quick and easy to keep the momentum going and this did the trick. The design generates some scraps, but a very small amount (last pic)

Could you be a bit freer in your approach to sewing? Freer from the shoulds and shouldn’ts that you’ve picked up, the fear of making mistakes, and even past experiences? My guest on this week’s episode, Tony Rea @tonyr.maker tells us how this fearless mindset took him from being a sewing newbie to a finalist in last year’s series of The Great British Sewing Bee. . Plus, Tony shares his formula for sewing more sustainably which includes #thriftedfabric, #zerowastesewingpatterns, #mending and not keeping a stash…. #birgittahelmersson #slipdress #zwslipdress Made from a bias tube fabric 135cm by 170cm in cotton/linen. I managed to position the joins predominantly on the back. I cut to the principles of the cutting plan so as to use all of the fabric, which meant it is probably a little on the long side (which is fine with me). In the spirit of stash reduction, Irummaged in my DMC cottons and found a motif crocheted made some while ago. It inspired me to make more and place them on one side of the front. I crocheted some straps and stitched them to fabric (from the offcuts created when straightening the fabric) for more support. #imakemyownclothes #sewingmystash #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #birgittahelmersson #zwslipdress

This the Suzuran Zero Waste Kimono Jacket which I sewed last year. The fabric is a rayon/linen blend from Lincraft. The pattern is by Tites Main, available in English though, on Etsy as a pdf download. The Zero Waste bit means that the pieces for together like a jigsaw on the fabric when you cut the pieces out, leaving almost no wasted fabric. Great pattern, easy to follow, and super comfortable to wear. I did the S/M size. I did need to add an inch to the length, just due to my measurements. I usually wear it with jeans, but here am wearing it over the Burnside Bib. #suzuranzerowastekimono #suzurankimonojacket #titesmainsuzuran #sewover50 #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern

My very-nearly-almost-zero-waste pleated top is done! Very out of season but I couldn’t resist trying out the origami/pleating technique. It is magical! Precision is required, as is patience with securing it all in place, but it is a very satisfy project to complete. The brilliant pattern is from the December ‘zine by @lizhaywood3754 . The collection of ‘zines is due for publication as an actual book ‘A Year of Zero Waste Sewing’ soon. There is also a video (link comes with the pattern) which gives addition tips and more detailed guidance - well worth watching. Fabric was purchased a few years ago, intended for a shirt for my husband. He said he didn’t want a casual white shirt 🤷‍♀️. It is a slightly textured, washed cotton. I wanted something that I could mark easily with my washable markers. White works 😂. I think this is a great summer top - simple swing/A line shape but with clever and visually interesting pleating. The back neck has a facing too (photo 3) - so no keyhole sunburn. I’m on the look out for something stripey now to make another… possibly a dress… Worn with #zerowasteculottes also by Liz. #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #sewover50 #sewover50february #so50tops #so50sustainablesewing

Never ever will I be done learning about #zerowastesewingpatterns! They are endlessly fascinating. In this week’s episode, we’re asking: what are the unique challenges that designing zero waste sewing patterns for children throws up? And the ways in which it might actually be easier? I speak to Liz Elliott @threadfactionstudio, who gives us a fascinating insight into her business and processes. . We also discuss navigating life when your role as a parent and as a business owner are entwined. AND how you can run a successful business literally from your kitchen table, and why that can be better than ‘professionalising’. . So yeah, Liz and I cover much ground. But also we have a lot of fun in this, and I think you will too…. . . . . . #checkyourthreadpodcast #checkyourthread #sewingpodcast #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #sewingforkids #sewingforchildren #sewingforgirls #sewingforboys #mummade #mamamade #sewingmoresustainably #sustainablesewing #sewingsustainably #lowwasteparenting #zerowasteparenting #threadfactionstudio #threadfaction #sewingpatternsforkids #sewingproject

Finally getting pics of my Cardigan Jacket from the Zero Waste Sewing book by @lizhaywood3754. Really like how it turned out. I have quite a large off cut so I may end up adding patch pockets at some point. I actually liked the “wrong” side of this French terry better and used the “ right” side for contrast. Bound the edges with a linen bias tape I found on Etsy. #sewing #isew #isewmyownclothes #isewmyclothes #slowfashion #imakemyclothes #imakemyownclothes #memade #memadeeveryday #memadewardrobe #genxsewing #sewingover40 #zerowastesewingpattern #madewithmood #moodfabrics

So. Friggin. Cold. Marshmallow-core. @surgefabricshop is dropping this bottom-weight cotton twill: “This week we are thrilled to offer you 12 beautiful hues of 10oz Cotton Denim. These are a great mid-weight denim fabric featuring a defined twill weave. It’s a structured denim with a smooth, crisp hand. These are the ideal weight for bottoms, jackets, skirts and so much more! Enjoy 20% off these new denims, along with all the other denim and bottom weight twills, no coded needed! Sale ends Thursday at midnight (CT)!“ It’s been below freezing and I finally just bundled up and headed out for photos. Luckily my wool @caidree #dartmoorsweater, paired with my denim skirt and wool socks— did an amazing job of keeping me warm. Designers— just a heads up that @kctarey_handmade, owner of @surgefabricshop is set up to work with you on fabric and design collabs! When she found out about my working on this pattern she sent me a sample to sew up for the release and I’ve been wearing this skirt frequently— it’s just such a comfortable statement! Pattern notes: It’s probably no surprise at this point t if you’ve spent any time talking patterns & fabrics with me that I’m a huge fan of Zero/low waste designs for both innovation AND practical reasons. It’s the best way to get the clothes I want to wear using higher quality fabrics because the designs utilize the yardage so efficiently. Take this Zero Waste Cargo Maxi skirt for example. (I haven’t added the cargo pockets yet because I’m waffling on which pocket view to use— there are three great options). The pattern is currently in development from @the_sew_sew — on pause because Cindy’s is amazing and put things on pause due to being invited to showcase her work— honestly, I’m so proud of my sewing and designer friends! #sewnshownseated #denimfabric #sewinclusivesizing #handmadewardrobe #zerowastesewingpattern #surgefabricshop #surgefabrics #fabricsale #naturalfibersewing #lowwastesewing

My mind has been blown after I did my first ever #zerowastepattern following this amazing book by @birgittahelmersson !! I made the singlet in one afternoon and just loved how simple and effective the pattern was - and ofcourse how there is NO wastage of fabric bits like there is from usual patterns. This top was my muslin but it turned out well enough for me to wear - which is what I’ve been doing continuously the past two days since it’s been so hot and humid!! I particularly loved how the arm hole binding just extends up to become the straps, and also the side slits which are a cool feature. I also like the high neckline given that area always seems to get sunburnt when exposed!! The darts which come down from the neckline are abit different too and great as the darts on usual patterns which come in from side seams always seem to be placed too high for me. Can’t wait to make more from fabric that I thrift to make this whole process totally #sustainable and #wastefree. I could easily see myself making all the patterns in this book and being able to create an entirely #memade #capsulewardrobe ! I stopped making clothes a while back because of how wasteful it all felt - but now having discovered this book and technique I feel ready to say goodbye to old patterns (already given a few away) and fully adopt zero waste patterns from now on - knowing that I can now be #sewing my own clothes guilt free. ☺️🥳👏🙌 #zerowasteliving #zerowastesewingpattern #sustainablefashion #slowfashion #handmade #sewingismytherapy #sewingproject #stopwaste

Snowy weekend sewing -pullover, low waste #lwanorak by @the_sew_sew, made size 10 but ended up taking it apart and cutting size 8 since this fabric has a bit of stretch. I will definitely make another in the shorter view with weather resistant fabric and all the fancy pockets as the pattern intends. -Saturday shorts from @caroline.hulse book Sew Caroline -fabric @joann_stores #hansonhandmade #handmadeeveryday #bernina #bernina1008 #selfcaresewing #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #lowwastesewing #lowwaste #fiberart #imakemyownclothes #sewfun #memadeeveryday

THE JIG IS UP PILLOW SET IS READY FOR TESTING Happy New Year my friends! I hope you had a wonderful end of 2023 and cheers to a fresh start! To begin this year, I am bringing you a brand new pattern specifically intended to help clean up your fabric scrap pile(s). I am looking for a group of enthusiastic pattern testers to help me finalize the pattern. This zero waste design includes layouts for 5 sizes on 5 different fabric widths. With the zero waste layout, you can choose to use 1 fabric or combine 2 fabrics and still achieve a zero waste cutting plan. You may also choose to use one of the 5 sizes on any random scrap fabrics you have and ignore the zero waste layouts. The intent for this pattern is to offer a way to tidy up your sewing space without producing any additional scraps in the process! Apply to be a pattern tester via the link in my bio 💕 I made the wool set featured almost a year ago at this point. I wanted to make a scrap busting project that checked a few boxes: - aesthetically pleasing - ability to still access the scraps within in case I want to use them for future projects (some of the scraps are quite decent sizes in there!) - could be a furry creature’s nap place - could serve as a sort of “ottoman” or floor pillow for a human to sit on - zero waste cutting plans so you do not produce any additional scraps in the process of making this sewing pattern And so The Jig Is Up Pillow Set pattern was created! The pattern includes 5 sizes from XS-XL which correspond to 5 different fabric width zero waste layouts. (See last photo for a comparison of XS to XL) Each size gets bigger in every direction - meaning it doesn’t just get wider, it also gets taller. So you can choose your size based on how much “stuffing” you have (aka fabric scraps!) or you can choose your size based on the fabric width you would like to use. We have 44”, 48”, 52”, 56”, and 60” widths covered. (112cm, 122cm, 132cm, 142cm, and 152cm) Let me know if you have any questions! More information is included in the tester application form linked in my bio so make sure to check that out ✨ #TheJigIsUpPillowSet #ZWPuzzlePillow

My first make of 2024 was officially cut out last year when I was making my birthday dress. I had to cut out two bodices in order to get four different panels and I'm not mad because I love the singlet top in @birgittahelmersson's book. As this top is cropped I didn't want to use the quarter circles from the arm holes on the side seam slit so I made a circle applique for extreme print clashing. I made long ties for the straps because I had to cut more bias than needed so as to use as much fabric as possible. I was going to wear this with a t-shirt under it to @thesewinglair today but the shop is closed due to the excess amount of sky moisture. The shop is okay but the roads are a mess around here. The rain has in fact washed away all my seed planting from the other day. Hoodie. Zero waste pattern. Fabric I've had for ages, that will biodegrade (don't know about the dyes though). Leftover thread from previous projects. A brave departure from my favourite blue and green 😆🥳. The pattern notes say this hoodie uses only about 75% of the fabric length that is usually required for a non zero waste hoodie. That seems legit, based on my experience. It was a simple, straightforward project, except that I put the hood on sideways at first, because I didn't check the measurements closely enough to see which way it should be oriented. My challenges came from the fabric, which is very loosely woven and frays like nothing else, but it was a surprisingly enjoyable sew nonetheless. I'm excited to wear this when the weather cools off a bit! #zerowaste #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #sustainablesewing

So I made my favorite pants, trying to go zero waste. 🧵My model is new Barbie curvy with blonde curls. I actually made two birthday dresses this year! Well, three if you count a slip dress? I didn't really feel the other outfit was the vibe (a mesh smock dress over a slip) so I cut up some lovely vintage pieces from @thesewinglair and used both @_diydaisy and @birgittahelmersson books to make a Frankenstein dress. It's not zero waste but there are very few scraps except for a nice usable square of one of them. If you were to use one fabric I'm sure it could be massaged into a zero waste layout. I'm not a yellow lover and mustard is even more challenging but I was drawn to all of these pieces. They were meant to be together!

That’s a wrap for the zero waste Vest Friend pattern launch week! It’s been so fun introducing my pattern to you all! This pattern has been such a work in progress and a long time coming and I want to shout out some folks that made it all possible! First off, you guys! I would never have pursued this process and learned all these skills along the way had it not been for your interest and encouragement to turn my idea into a pattern! @zwdcollective you are a major inspiration for me and it was your online pattern grading workshop by @lizhaywood3754 that got me started on the technical process of creating my inclusive size range and drafting and grading my cutting templates. Thank you ZWDC and Liz! Big thank you to @handmademandy in collaboration with @erbaccia_studio for their mini workshop on writing pattern instructions, which helped me finalize all my pattern documents for testing. That brings me to my incredible testing team— @emptyhangerpatterns @ovenbird.makes @goldfinchtextilestudio @my.stitch.story @sewariasew @garalastudio @inspiredsewist @tonyr.maker @mjthalen @hagesichora @smileshaveteeth @jrble @msromoscreations @ali_sow_n_sew @droppin_bobbins @handmademandy—your time and energy sewing up my pattern and providing feedback for all parts of the process were indispensable for making the pattern what it is today! Finally, a big shout out to my sewing pal and zero-waste pattern design inspiration, @goldfinchtextilestudio, for all your support and assistance over these many many months! I always knew I could check in with you on things that came up along the way and that was so reassuring! Thank you Emily! And there you have it—it really takes a village to get a pattern out! I appreciate all the folks who purchased the pattern this week too! Don’t forget to tag me when you share your Vest Friends—I cannot wait to see them!! Quilted Vest Friends!! Quilting your own light-weight fabrics is a great way to make view 1 and view 2 with fabric already in your stash! The pattern does not include step-by-step instructions for the entire quilting process, but there are linked resources (including videos) in the Whole Cloth Quilting section of the appendix that give you instructions, tips and tricks for quilting your own fabric. The pattern itself provides info on considerations for single- vs. double-sided quilted fabrics! Single-sided quilting (quilting each fabric to its own batting layer) is preferable as you can follow the construction process as written in the pattern. However, double sided quilted pieces (one batting layer sandwiched between both fabrics) is doable with some simple hacks—like flat-felling or bias binding the shoulders, and hand stitching the patch pockets for a reversible garment! I’ve included photos of both options—view 1 reversible pink and white side ties Vest Friend has both main and lining quilted separately. The ikat and golden view 2, has a single layer of batting with both main and lining fabric quilted together. Talented testers versions from @sewariasew and @droppin_bobbins show both styles too. Aria opted for a clean flat felled seam at the shoulders on her double-sided burgundy quilted vest. Katie quilted a precious Guatemalan textile she’d been saving, and her lining fabric separately which creates a more lofty and extra snuggly finished garment with two fabric/batting layers. Who’s ready to make a quilted Vest Friend?! Pattern is still 20% off through tomorrow with VESTFRIEND20 #sewistsofinstagram #soybeansewingpattern #zwvestfriendpattern #vestfriendpattern #vestfriend #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #zerowastepatterndesign #sustainablesewing #imakemyclothes #memadeeveryday #youcanhackit

Let’s talk Vest Friend View 3! The third and final view of the pattern is a warmer-weather airy top! Still lined, it is totally reversible and features two small patch pockets on the main or lining side of your garment. This is a great version for your light weight wovens, like yarn dyed cottons, ikats, light weight linens, lawns and voiles. This view is definitely more cutesie with armhole offcuts becoming shoulder ruffles! It is a dream to wear in the hot summer; with the loose feel as well as more open sides, it’s almost as if you’ve got nothing on! I have some dress hacks planned for this view when things warm up again in spring! But for now, you can try it over your collared shirts like testers @smileshaveteeth and @garalastudio! Or if you’re in the southern hemisphere, go sleeveless like @emptyhangerpatterns in her classic back version! And if shoulder ruffles aren’t for you, you can save those offcuts for another project or mending, just like @hagesichora opted for. Thank you testers for bringing this view to life! Anyone planning to make View 3 right away?! I’d love to hear your plans in the comments below! Don’t forget the pattern is 20% off through Saturday with VESTFRIEND20. #sewistsofinstagram #soybeansewingpattern #zwvestfriendpattern #vestfriendpattern #vestfriend #zerowastesewing #zerowastesewingpattern #zerowastepatterndesign #imakemyownclothes #memadeeveryday #sustainablesewing

Let’s take a look at Vest Friend View 2 today! This view features a collar which is so nice as it gets a little chillier outside. Because of this detail, there are two different size pockets on this view. The large patch pocket is the same as those on view 1 and the small patch pocket uses all the same pieces as the welt pocket, but gives you a different look at feel! If asymmetry with your pockets doesn’t appeal to you, you can use the Pocket Modifications Guide included with the pattern to create two same size pockets from all these pocket pieces, or even reduce the height of your large patch pocket while creating an extra interior pocket for a cellphone or other small items! The garment details of the Vest Friend are really very easy to customize! Take a closer look at the tester versions of View 2. They all turned out so lovely! (@goldfinchtextilestudio , @handmademandy , @hagesichora , @my.stitch.story , @smileshaveteeth , @droppin_bobbins , @inspiredsewist , @jrble) Sewist’s sizing information along with each person’s specifics mods are on my blog. I thought it would be fun to give you a closer look at each view of the Vest Friend and its feature during the pattern release week. View 1 is a great option if you like to layer! With a crew neckline, View 1 is perfect over statement or regular collar tops, as well as the perfect piece to wear under your coats for a little extra body heat! This view has two prominent patch pockets with side access—don’t worry, you don’t have to be awkwardly digging down into those deep pockets! Also, if large-and-in-charge pockets aren’t your thing, use any of the 4 pocket modifications in the Pocket Modifications Guide to customize this detail for height and width and still keep it zero waste! Notice how the lining of this version features a fun interior stash pocket! It’s a basic welt style pocket, and a fun new sewing skill to try—very approachable in my opinion! I also hacked one of my versions to have a small phone holding pocket at the top of the long patch pockets (instead of the interior welt) so it is up and out of the way when I want to have my hands in the pockets. When it comes to the details of the Vest Friend, really the sky’s the limit. You can hack to your heart’s content! My versions and my fabulous View 1 testers (@sewariasew @tonyr.maker and @ovenbird.makes) are featured here. Do you have any questions about View 1? Let me know in the comments if you are scheming up your own View 1 Vest Friend! Happy release day to the #VestFriend by @sewsoybean 🎉 The Vest Friend is a zero/low waste vest with side closure details. I made view 2 in size E. The pattern includes the option to select a size or use your own measurements and desired ease to draft your vest. I made mine out of a piece of thrifted wool for the exterior and a remnant of linen for the lining. I used Kam snaps with a long prong as my closures. I really like the ability to adjust how the side seams are snapped depending on what you're wearing underneath or what you're doing. The pattern includes thorough instructions and there are lots of hacks/mods included. The pattern is on sale for 20% off with the code VESTFRIEND20. Congratulations Bean!!

Some ongoing work. I've been R&Ding a set of zero waste designs based on historical sewing patterns. These pieces are at @apres.lamour in Kingston & @madexhudsonshop in Hudson & Catskill & I'll be sharing some background info about them here. Here's a piece based on the traditional Hungarian Guba coat pattern- a blouse in a thrifted mystery blend of silk/linen double cloth. I love the Guba pattern: the clever simplicity of the cutting layout is arrestingly elegant; the material it was traditionally made of is similarly elegant for its sustainability. It looks like sheepskin but is a woven wool cloth with locks of wool inserted into the weave, creating a sheepskin effect. Sheep's milk was a staple of the Hungarian diet until the mid-19th century & people wanted to keep their sheep alive for as long as they could, to have wool and milk BOTH & also not kill them for just the meat or sheepskin. The breed most popular in Hungary for a long time was the 'racka juh' - 'racka sheep'; a glorious-looking sheep (pronounced Rats-kah); it produced wool & milk for years & a good amount of meat & skin at the end of its life span. Ironically, this type of multipurpose sheep is no longer considered economically viable (racka juh are only kept as historical artifacts these days). Today's breeds are focused on either wool or meat or more rarely milk & the parts of these focused breeds that are not part of their focus (like the wool of the sheep grown for its meat) is thrown away. A breed of sheep that can do all the things though none of them in a super-efficiently-specialized way is not economically viable today even if, strictly speaking, it's more ecologically sustainable. Back to the Guba design, it's open-source; search for 'guba szabásminta' ('guba sewing pattern') & you'll find lots of patterns showing the Guba cut; in Hungarian& no measurements so you'll have to figure the ratio of sleeves-to-bodice-to-length you prefer. I used my neck cutout template from my blue-dye drop shoulder blouse & meant to use the cutout as a pocket but forgot - and found it on my pressing mat when I got home, all ready to go (ironically, my pressing mat is made of wool).

Sharing my almost zero waste reversible quilted jacket. I used a fun jungle print pre-quilted fabric from @minervadotcom and the Zero Waste Jacket pattern from Birgitta Helmersson’s Zero Waste Patterns book. The pre-quilted fabric is “nifty” and the jacket being reversible, also “nifty”, makes this my contribution to Nifty November hosted by @sewing_in_spain @suestoney @timetosew. I finally made my first piece from Zero Waste Patterns by @birgittahelmersson! I needed more cool tops for summer so the singlet made out of linen fit the bill perfectly. I really like this! I just needed to reduce the straps by about 10 cm. I have yet more of this @spotlightstores linen cotton, I must have bought a million metres on sale? I've already made shorts for both Nick and I! #historienomsverige #zerowastesewingpattern

Second workshop was an absolute blast. We came up with this design using all remains, and a happy group of people, who enjoyed the sewing. With: @algorithmic_cybernetic At: @shizzle_contemporaryart Also called: Kulturcafe Max. The location provides a nicely decorated interior, everything pre-owned, drinks, concerts and workshops! A [1/1] in Vienna and a must see. Next workshop coming soon! Follow us for more updates, regarding workshops and our work-ethics.
