#RATN2024 #day2 "Whats your plan for today? - Pedal". Woke up at hotel completely soaked in sweat. Some indications that my health is not good. That means i already started this adventure with some kind of sickness 🫣. I started my second day at 6AM from Deuningen. Just in few kilometers i met a bunch of participants. Small chat with some of them. I was behind my scheduled plan, so decided to increace my progress. After 100km stopped in the Rheeze for a fresh mint tea and local corn pie. Nice local tee garden 🥰. Then another stop for some burgers and fries in Nieuw-Weerdinge. Then more burgers just before Groningen. Since i had a tailwind all day, easily reached Groningen by evening. Was a bit tricky to get through closed roads and constructions while entering the city. Wind gusts got stronger. Had massive tailwind till Appingedam. After this, i made my mind to push through the night. Emotions were good, till i reached a top north coast. Temperature kept dropping down steadily. Still rolling on #ratn #racearoundthenetherlands #adventurebikeracing I've got 330 km with the Limberg climbs in front of me. I thought I had trashed my chances with a 138 km #routemuppet error. I had to pull up early 2 days ago with a total upper back spasm too. Stupid ignored a nagging muscle pain under the shoulder blade as you do in these things and it flared up to a massive freeze. I'm riding on the elbow pads of my aerobars now with shortened arms like a t-rex🦖🤣. Or Tommy Cooper " just like that". #ratn2024 day 1 began with an early ride to the start. The first group was launched at 8 AM. Legs were ok. Visited beautiful De Hoge Veluwe park. Did a good pace till 140km. After that, I started to feel stress on my back. Reduced a pace to cruising speed. Struggled with easy hills. Stopped at some shops and restaurants for water and snacks. Had some fries and King's day special cake at Haaksbergen. With 270km in a pocket, i was lucky to find a room at the hotel. Otherwise I would have gone into the night. Rest for the back is needed. ✨️ PENNY // Race around the Netherlands '24 ✨️ If a thought that comes to mind is: "Why on earth would you do something like that on a bike like this?" Well, you're not the first one to think it. Plenty of people have asked me this question up until now, which has actually been a nice thing. It has given me the opportunity to put words to a decision that was - initially - solely based on a gut feeling. Out of all of my bikes, 'Penny' is by far the heaviest and, with that, definitely the slowest. But when I think of myself as a cyclist, it doesn't make sense for me to pick any of my other bikes. Here's why: I have never been fast, nor am I a racer. What I am, is a bike messenger. I have been so for almost 7 years, and that's for about ¼th of my life. I spend most of my kilometres carrying around and organising cargo; it's what I know and what I'm good at. And most of all, cycling-wise, it feels like home. I think in cycling ultra distances - just as much as in life itself - your biggest obstacle is yourself. And definitely since it's my first ultra, I'd rather stay close to who I am and what I'm most comfortable with. Just so that doesn't create an extra (possible) obstacle. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that I will never switch back to a lighter bike in the future, because - just as much as in life itself - identity isn't static. We change, we adapt, we grow. And if we do it right (I'd say) we stick, if not temporarily, to the things that resonate. Right now, this is the choice that resonates most with who I am, and that only boosts the confidence I have in my being able to succeed in this challenge. Less than 20 days left!!! Extra fuel and a bigger rad was definitely needed along with proper suspension. Really missed the @tractivesuspension_motorcycle shock. Think the oil has completely broken down. The terrain has just been relentless. Got to hand it to the 990 though. It's bloody impressive what it achieved. Brutal last day but it's done. 12th in the end. 3rd in class. All sand with 4 dune sets. Carta Rallye an awesome event but I misjudged the difficulty level massively. Es sollte mein großes Ziel in diesem Sommer sein – das @taunusbikepacking Gravelbike-Event. Sehr lange hatte ich es bereits im Kopf, hätte mich fast schon für die Ausgabe im vorigen Jahr angemeldet, mich dann aber dazu entschlossen, vorerst noch mehr Lebenskilometer zu sammeln und kleinere Bikepacking-Erfahrungen zu machen. Doch für die diesjährige Veranstaltung konnte man sich nicht mehr nach dem Motto "First Come, First Served" anmelden, sondern es gab eine Art Verlosung. Für die 99 Startplätze gab es allerdings 220 Bewerbungen – und leider bekam ich keinen Platz ... Schade, schade, schade – Traum ausgeträumt! Daher gilt es jetzt, eine alternative Herausforderung zu finden. Momentan denke ich über eine Teilnahme an The Hills have Bikes von @adventurebikeracing nach. Da ich für 2025 ohnehin schon das Race around the Netherlands GX ins Auge gefasst habe, das am selben Ort startet und endet, wäre das sicherlich eine gute Sache ...
