The culture confirmed it; I’ve got shingles. Apparently, it is a common side effect of immunosuppressive treatment (which I’ve been on for years for Crohn’s). I’m “lucky” to have caught the shingles early and started treatment, but it has spread. You might think, oh this is just a rash. Oh damn, you’d be so wrong. This is waves of spasming, stabbing pains in my head, neck, ear, and eye. This is feeling like the right side of my brain is exploding. Normally I hate taking any kind of opioid, but this is not my normal chronic pain. There would be absolutely nothing good to say about today if it weren’t for my dear friend Kelley, who is always there for me in an emergency. She picked up my prescription for stronger painkillers from the pharmacy because I can barely move my neck and it didn’t seem prudent to drive. My Monday started off at Urgent Care for what I thought was a serious spider bite reaction on my neck. Turns out a bite would have been preferable. The doctor thinks it is shingles. She swabbed it and said I’m lucky to start treatment quickly. But nothing is helping the off-the-chart pain in my neck and head. Mostly I just have to knock myself out with Benadryl. Thankfully, Mama received her shingles vaccine a few months ago. So far, she is not showing any signs. Mama and I spent the day together, enjoying delicious food that was prepared by other people. We started with Village Bakery pastries and frothy coffee at home. Mama’s almond croissant was nearly as big as the plate! We later ordered our favorite Tuscan Garlic Chicken Pizza delivered from Mary’s Pizza. And we finished the day with a scrumptious Madagascar Vanilla and Raspberry Cake from Susie’s Cakes. Mama and I ran out of time and energy for our intended craft project, but we enjoyed a low-key day together. Now we have a really cool art activity to anticipate. Sometimes you just need a hug from your mom. Today was one of those days. I was already anxious about my long infusion day at the hospital (immunosuppressive treatment for Crohn’s), and it wasn’t a great day. Though 2024 is my fourth c@nn@b1s growing season, this is the first year I’m growing from seeds. I planted Victory Hemp CBD and Afternoon Punch THC cannabis seeds (from expert gardener Emily at Grow It From Home), plus sunflowers as companion plants. Adventures with Mama 💕🌱
While at Craftcation, I joked that I’d likely have to spend the rest of April in bed. Sadly it was only part joke. Living with chronic illnesses means I had to plan very carefully for my energy, or my “spoons” on both the macro and micro levels. For weeks beforehand, I did not go out or do any “big spoons” activities, trying to rest as much as possible and pace myself. Each day of my trip I was extremely fatigued and in constant pain. But there was adrenaline, nerves, caffeine, and the joy of crafting in community to keep me going. My body also forced me to skip some things. And I knew not to plan anything for at least a couple weeks post-trip. Since I got home, all of my chronic illnesses have flared—the pain and fatigue are even worse than usual. But it was absolutely worth it. Despite all this toll on me, I will 100% go again. Next time I’ll have my Post-Trip Notes to Myself (ways to improve to make it easier physically). I rallied this past weekend to celebrate my birthday at a crafting workshop with Mama, but I can see my body needs longer to recover. So today, after therapy, I just took it easy. As evidenced in the photo, Benny is quite happy for a day of sleeping on top of me and snoring loudly while I watch CSI and nap. Today’s #OneGoodThing with Mama is listening to my body! After a quiet, restful birthday on my own yesterday, Mama and I celebrated together today. We attended an ice-dyeing workshop, a form of tie-dye we’d never done. Scrunching up our shirts and playing with the layers of powdered dye and ice was fun; we’re eager to see how they’ll turn out once the ice melts! We enjoyed the lovely atmosphere of the brewery where the event was held (including this gorgeous iris flower), but it was surprisingly hot. Not only is today one of my favorite holidays (happy 420 friends), but it’s my birthday! My plans for the day were thwarted so I pivoted to a relaxed day at home. I enjoyed my favorite herb while I worked on a puzzle and watched old CSI Miami episodes. I ate delicious food that I didn’t have to prepare. And I took a decadent nap stretched out in bed (with Benny, of course). Even the mail was great—this gorgeous, fun, pink marijuana leaf fabric was delivered! Thank you to my friend and expert cannabis gardener Emily for this beauty!!! I can’t wait to make cool stuff with it! The highlight of my birthday was my favorite cake. It’s a SusieCakes 6-layer chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and it is perfection. Friends, this is the same type of cake I acquired for Self Care Cake Day and it was worth a drive with sciatica pain. And this cake has a turquoise ombre around it! Be still my heart! In my ongoing quest to figure out who I am anymore and what I want from my life, I recently decided to dress like I’m at Craftcation every day (except without the name tag). For me, this means dressing like my inner child is in charge. This is a recent expedition in my mission toward body acceptance (positivity is still a stretch frankly). I’m dressing as oddly or loudly as I please. After all, I’m 42 tomorrow, so what do I care what anyone else thinks of what I’m wearing. I’ve reached the stage of female invisibility anyway. Today’s outfit is an adorable print jumpsuit that I cuffed at the arms and legs ‘cause I’m short. My brain had stopped finding joy and calm through puzzling in the lead-up to my big trip to Craftcation earlier this month. I just couldn’t focus on a puzzle and packing all at once. This last year has been one of transformation. From the point of ultimate burnout, I felt like a phoenix being reborn. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out who I am anymore and what I enjoy and want in life. Attending Craftcation Makers & Business Conference was a big part of that. It was a chance to rediscover joy in crafting and in being myself. Inspiration abounded. As all of us crafty weirdos left, it reminded me of leaving Burning Man and being told, Welcome to the Default World. I miss the crafty, friendly atmosphere. And I miss everyone’s gloriously fabulous outfits and confidence. Body positivity often feels like a stretch internally, but I no longer wish to hide my body or blend in. Part of what I most enjoy in selling homemade goods is trading with other vendors. Mama and I did this a lot when we made embellished bustiers. One of the best parts of Craftcation is the generous spirit and gifting culture of crafters. Not only did everyone come open to learning and teaching, but people brought an array of incredible little handmade gifts to share. Each came with a special story and connection. Among the first I received was a beaded bracelet that says You Are Magic. I was so touched. As I’ve been getting into sewing more lately, I’m obsessed with the measuring tape bracelet. I adore the beautiful hanging rainbow, which resonated with my creative spirit. The puppy bow tie with hearts looks very cute on Benny. The Craftcation Pop-Up Shop is a glory unto itself. As a newbie, it was overwhelming in the best way. Like an entire craft fair condensed into a lovingly curated and styled conference room turned magical craft land. Each shelf/stand also contained a little bio and a picture of the artist. I loved it! Every walkthrough, I’d see new items I hadn’t noticed before. Plus, the wonderful Shop Manager Briana was literally my first friend at Craftcation, when I arrived with my own contributions. While I was honored for my ACE Recovery Balm to be included in the Craftcation Pop-Up Shop, getting to shop from these incredible makers was so much fun. After an inspiring, creative, exhausting week at my first Craftcation Business & Makers Conference, Benny and I made the long drive home from Ventura. The views on the drive were wonderful (especially compared with the boring I-5 landscape). Before we even got on the highway, we spotted this gorgeous mural; and then we drove alongside the beach and palm trees for a while. Seeing the Golden Gate Bridge was a relief and comfort because that has always meant home to me. The final push to get through today and get home was Herculean. My chronic illnesses acted up the entire trip and I had to use my “spoons” as wisely as possible. Physically, it was an incredibly difficult week. Though I tried to rest and pace myself, I pushed myself too much. There were just so many amazing people to meet and cool things to do. The penultimate day of Craftcation was jam-packed with crafts. I made two small concrete vessels, a carved stamp of myself, and a shibori indigo-dyed shirt and scarf. A true highlight of the day was giving out my last two free samples of my homemade organic topical ACE Recovery Balm. I poured more than 300 wee containers pre-trip. The Craftcation Business & Makers Conference starts this week and I feel like a kid eagerly awaiting Christmas or a big birthday. I’ve wanted to attend for many years but it wasn’t previously possible due to 24/7 caregiving. Once Mama got settled into her Assisted Living apartment, I realized this was what I most wanted to do and signed up. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to help send me to Craftcation. I am grateful for your support. With intense foreplanning and luck, I got into most of the workshops I wanted to attend. I’m especially excited to design my own stickers, learn Shibori dyeing, and use my budding sewing skills in the Caftan-making class. I’ve tried to carefully plan my schedule to account for my limited energy and other health issues. I just hope my body cooperates. Today was yet another long, exhausting day at the hospital. I’ve lost count of the number of these immune-suppressing IV infusions for Crohn’s Disease I’ve had. I’ve been practicing sewing lately but found the machine suddenly stopped cooperating. I sought help from a loved one and a new friend from the sewing store.
