An afternoon spent enjoying the surprisingly mild weather, that was until we got rather soaked on our way home! I actually can't remember what a walk to town is like anymore that takes less than an hour or so each way! First day in Kindergarten 🏫 And it went great! We came to circle time, junior kicked off his shoes and ran in and joined them. I had some forms to fill out, had a chat with his kindergarten teacher and an hour later I went outside where he was playing on the playground with the other kids 😀 He has never been shy, he is always curious, outgoing and friendly which is perfect for new places and meeting new people. Often when a child falls or gets bumped and becomes upset it's not that they are badly hurt, but more that they were startled by something they weren’t expecting. Just like pain or sadness, we want to validate this feeling too. An easy way to do this is to simply say, "you weren't expecting that." Another way you can address this is to check in with your child and ask them what they're feeling. You could say something like, "did that hurt you, or did that scare you?" This will help your child learn to decipher the difference between these feelings in their body. (Note: we don’t want to dismiss pain if they are hurt—often times it can be both pain and surprise, so validate both). When you understand what upset your child, you're able to correctly address their experience so you can properly soothe them. I have 3 cats and an English bulldog. My son’s father and I have been together for almost 4 years but have known each other for over 10 years.
