NEW BLOG: Battling Carer Burnout: Recognising, overcoming and Reflecting. As a caregiver, the journey can be both very rewarding and downright challenging. One of the most common challenges faced by caregivers is burnout. Carer Gateway shared that there are 2.65 million carers in Australia which means 1 in 9 people will take on the carer role. This blog aims to shed light on what burnout looks like, strategies to overcome it, and reflections on personal experiences. What Does Burnout Look Like? Caregiver burnout manifests in various ways, both physically and emotionally. Some common signs of burnout include: Constant Exhaustion: Feeling physically and emotionally drained, even after resting. Increased Irritability: Becoming easily frustrated or impatient with the person being cared for or others. Lack of Motivation: Losing interest in activities that were once enjoyable. Sleep Issues: Difficulty sleeping or experiencing frequent nightmares. Physical Symptoms: Headaches, muscle tension, and other physical ailments due to stress. Isolation: Withdrawing from social activities or feeling lonely despite being around others. Recognizing these signs early is crucial in preventing burnout from escalating. The Care Side recently did a survey which showed that 94% of surveyed caregivers said they often feel physically or mentally exhausted due to their caregiving responsibilities, whilst 92% reported they often neglect their own needs. We went to the Park! Some parents with neurodiverse children find it hard to get their children out of the house for hundreds of reasons such as "What will people say?" They wonder how they'll care for a hyperactive child who has ADHD, an autistic child, or a child with Down Syndrome who does not fit in the same space where neurotypical children play. they'll come up with the weirdest excuses in their minds all out of fear. Guess what? We had fun! The children were elated! People looked and asked questions, more people got to understand what neurodiverse children are like and what the struggles were for the families caring for these children. And a lot more families are becoming better at caring for their children outside the home and are feeling better about taking their children out in public. It wasn't all play, parents of nonverbal autistic children also learned new techniques and exercises to help the children massage their mouth muscles to encourage better movement and speech. One other significant thing we achieved was helping them get comfortable with their surrounding. Many neurodiverse children live with sensory impairments that prevent them from understanding and enjoying simple things like the feel of the grass under their feet. So, we tried it. Today is our regular 6 monthly check in with the Consultant/Liver Team, it's always a little anxiety inducing as you're never sure what they might spot, or how much worse hubby might have gotten since our last visit. We do feel like we live in 6 month cycles but we try not to get overly anxious. Something that really helps is a Bible verse we came across a few years ago, and I always bring it back to mind - Psalms 112 verses 7 & 8 which say: "He will not fear bad news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in Jehovah. His heart is unshakable; he is not afraid..." Resilience, the capacity to bounce back, recover quickly when we are faced with challenges and difficulties. Physical and mental toughness. I find myself conflicted about resilience. On one hand I would say resilience is one of my strongest attributes, but there's a reason it is so strong, it's strong because of the number of times I've been to hell and back. But without the strength I now have because of those experiences, without knowing I had that strength within me the last few years would have been very different. But now I hope there are no more resilience building experiences, no more times that I need to dig deep to find strength. I have enough resilience, enough strength, enough experiences. Now is a time for ease, for softness, for contentment.
