The 12th-century Agricola Tower was the first stone gateway to Chester Castle, which had been founded by William the Conqueror in 1070. The castle stands on an eminence overlooking the River Dee. Parts of the neoclassical buildings are used today as Crown Courts and as a military museum. The castle has also been used as a prison. Some trolls were tried held captive here, but with no success.
