The Dalton Highway in Alaska is a legendary road that stretches 414 miles from Fairbanks to Deadhorse, passing through some of the most remote and scenic landscapes in the state. July 25. Fairbanks, Alaska. We rode #riverboatdiscovery along the #chenariver. Along the river we saw a seaplane land and takeoff, sled dogs take off for training, more caribou, and a native #chenaindianvillage. We stopped at the #alaskanpipeline and visited #santaclausehouse in North Pole, Alaska. It was always light out in Alaska. We took a sunset picture at 11:00pm and it was still dusk when our plane took off at 3:00am.

The silver "domes" in the background across the Valdez harbor is the end of the Alaskan Pipeline that was completed in 1977. I was corrected when I called it the beginning of the pipeline. I'll see the true beginning of the pipeline when I visit Prudhoe Bay in a few weeks. I remember the building of the Alaskan Pipeline well. I was in High School when they started its construction. My father passed away this evening around 6:15 EST. He was 80 years old. Weāve known for 6 months now that he had terminal cancer. It spread to his liver, lungs & brain. The last six months his memory was pretty bad. But we spoke last Monday & although he sounded very tired, his spirits were up. We had a nice, short, final conversation of which he was asking about William. My father led a pretty interesting life. He joined the Navy in 1960 (Seabee) & served 3 tours in Vietnam which earned him a Purple Heart. He left the Navy after 10 years & later became a pipe fitter. He worked with my grandfather on the Alaskan pipeline in the 1970s. He was very intelligent & handy. He built the addition on his house with a friend & made our dining room table for us. After retirement he became passionate about baking & cooking. He was a grill master who built himself an outdoor kitchen. He even roasted a whole pig in his back yard. Most of my friends knew him. He & Aurora cooked for all of them. I always say that the best Cuban food in Miami is at my father & Auroraās house. Overall his health was fairly good until last summer, when his memory loss was very apparent. Once he got the diagnosis in January he was given 6-12 months to live. He lived exactly 6 months. The Dalton Highway, aka the Haul Road. A 414 mile stretch of mostly dirt that starts about 80 miles north of Fairbanks, passes over the Yukon River, up through Coldfoot, winds through the Brooks Range by way of Atigun Pass, and eventually ends in Prudhoe Bay, which is situated on the Arctic Ocean. The road was made in the effort to build and service the Alaskan pipeline, which runs alongside it. We drove the whole thing in search of Caribou. We could hunt them with a rifle north of the Brooks range, as long as we were 5 miles off the road. Checking out the section of the Alaskan pipeline Arielās dad helped build in the 70ās. Now that weāve seen the wild beauty of Alaska, weāre surprised he didnāt just stay. Instead, he carved out his wilderness paradise in the Catskill mountains of NY. He hiked into the woods, set-up a couple of teepees by a creek and called it home. He still lives on the same land- now in a big log cabin with a legit dirt road and an impressive self-built water collection system. Fun bonus facts: When Ariel was a baby, her mom made her a raccoon coat out of an aggressive raccoon that was hanging around the teepees- kinda mind blowing if you know Arielās mom now. When Ariel was in high school, the shortest way to a main road was a path through the woods. Being picked up by the school bus in the middle of the woods with no houses in sight added to her weird girl mystique. #alaskanpipeline #rvtoalaska #nomadlife #exploremore
