One of the leading figures in contemporary Japanese ceramics, Akihiro Maeta creates elegant and minimal sculptures from white porcelain that are deeply inspired by the vessel form. Having been collected by 22 public institutions throughout the world, in particular the Musée Ariana in Geneva, the British Museum in London, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Maeta is widely considered to be the preeminent porcelain artist of his generation, and in evidence of this great recognition, the artist has been designated a Living National Treasure by the Emperor of Japan in 2013. ・ ◾️Neiges Éternelles - Akihiro Maeta Solo Exhibition 2024 4/25 (Thu) - 5/25 (Sat) 10 am. 〜 6 pm. from Tuesday to Saturday Venue: GALERIE MAYARO 20 Rue Amélie, 75007 Paris Foreword by Living National Treasure Akihiro Maeta When I first began studying ceramics, I was deeply moved by the boldness of the vessel form within unadorned white porcelain, shorn of any colour or embellishments. This became the impetus for me to delve into the creation of white porcelain alone. Why must I create white porcelain, and what exactly is white porcelain in the first place? While thinking of these existential questions through both form and glazing, I work every day in creating white porcelain. I live in a humid climate with mild sunshine, yet in winter there is sometimes so much snow that the mountains and fields are completely covered in white. It is an extraordinary sight, and I am always moved by it. I can almost feel the changing of colours within white itself, reflected by the soft lights and shadows that emerge on the surfaces of my white porcelain, and at these times, I realise that I too have been deeply influenced by the climate and the environs of my hometown. As I continue to make white porcelain, I have come to believe that the absence of adornments and colour is more a matter of subtraction rather than addition. This is much like the omission of superfluous things in Japanese “tanka” and “haiku” poetry. The beauty of leaving things left unsaid in Japanese culture has its own unique world that cannot be reached by adding decorative elements, and I hope to express the same minimal aesthetics within my white porcelain. This is my first solo exhibition in Paris. I am nervous and at the same time excited to see how my white porcelain works will be received. I sincerely hope you will enjoy this exhibition to the fullest. ・ ◾️INFINI - Infinity in Material April 4th 〜 27th Auguries of Innocence by William Blake “To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour” The poem “Auguries of Innocence” by William Blake begins with a very Zen proposition – it encourages one to discover an entire universe in an otherwise miniscule, abundant and austere particle of grit. It is easier said than done. But I have always been fascinated by this way of thinking, that myriad mysteries were hidden in the tiniest of corners, and that great beauty can be found in virtually anything – if one only took the time to turn the stones over. To hold in one’s hand something so boundless as the infinitival, and to embrace that fleeting and allusive moment of beauty that we call the eternal. Is this not what great artists aspire to achieve in the art they make? And is this not what the artists affiliated with Kanata strive to create from the materials and techniques at their disposal? To transcend time and space, the borders of nations, to melt down the divides that tear mankind apart, where religions and ethnicities, language and culture disappear and disintegrate into utter insignficance. Is this not why we make art? To let us forget, for that just one moment, the infinite loneliness of our very existence, to pacify and to heal, to bring us together, a harmony forged from the embers of the beautiful. From an urban temple to a wildly overcrowded shrine (hard pass on Senso-ji, friends, unless you go at dawn), from a 600-meter-a-minute (not a typo) ride to 350m (and then even higher) to a long wait with Tokyo families for (delicious!) mall sushi, from a phenomenal Street Art exhibition to learning that women have their own metro cars (extremely restricted days, times, and routes ... room for growth [just sayin']) and a sublime gallery experience ... I am leaving with a full heart and so much new learning. It is not surprising, then, that the young artist’s raison d‘être is entwined with the expression of nature as a source of not only sublime beauty, but as a brute force that demands an almost solemn reverence. In the words of Kierkegaard, it is in “fear and trembling” that Sato approaches his subject matter, juxtaposed with a sense of awe and inspiration that water evokes. The adoration of nature is perhaps an inherently Japanese trait, as for millennia our forefathers had found in nature a polytheistic world brimming with the gods in every facet of our environs – in the mountains and in our forests, in the oceans and in the skies above. Sato is no different. But rather than simply limning the beauty of nature in innocent landscapes, Sato creates soaring odes to the power of nature through the use of the elemental, focusing on water itself as not only his greatest muse, but as the principal instrument for his paintings.
