Just published! My article ‘John van Collema: a Dutch India goods merchant in London’ is now out in ‘Close Encounters: Cross-Cultural Exchange between the Low Countries and Britain 1600-1830’, published online by RKD Studies. From around 1684 to 1737, Van Collema ran a shop in the West End of London from which he sold porcelain, lacquer, fans, tea and all sorts of lovely little things imported from China, Japan and India. This was high end retail: his wealthy customers included two queens and a duchess, who visited again and again to build up their porcelain collections. I like to imagine them browsing the array of exotic goods, unable to resist yet another set of teacups. The research for this article came out of a pleasurable rabbit hole that I descended after finishing my PhD. I’d found the most amazing stack of Van Collema’s itemised bills in the Duchess of Somerset’s papers in the Petworth House Archives, the sort that historians (me) get very excited about, so I mentally earmarked them for a future project. What I didn’t expect was that John van Collema would turn out to have such an exciting backstory, taking him from an Oliver-Twist like start in the Breda orphanage to immense riches, friendship with a duchess, and a sealed envelope with a secret legacy. 書籍:讃岐漆芸 工芸王国の系譜 著:住谷晃一郎 発行:河出書房新社 発行日:2005年10月20日 サイズ:25.8 x18.5 x 2.7cm 「讃岐うどん」だけではない。 かつて香川県には「工芸王国」と言われた時代があった。 香川の伝統工芸であり特産である漆器を復権させたいという著者の思いから、讃岐漆芸の双璧・玉楮象谷と磯井如真を軸として、重要作家を伝記的に取り上げながら、讃岐漆芸の全貌を明らかにしたのが本書。 多数の文献にあたり、それだけでなく所縁の地を訪ね歩き、事実から人物像を浮かび上がらせた。 専門的、学術的内容を分かりやすく、読み物として楽しめるように多くのカラー図版とエピソードを交えてまとめ上げている。 ここからは余談ですが、エピソードの中で、そうだったんだ！と思ったことが2つあります。 一つは、玉楮象谷と磯井如真ともに、あの山中商会と関係があったこと。 山中商会とは明治から昭和初期にニューヨーク、ボストン、ロンドンに支店を出した古美術商で、山中商会については、朽木ゆり子著「ハウス・オブ・ヤマナカ」に詳しく書かれています。 もう一つは、讃岐漆芸の得意とする蒟醤（きんま）という技法のところで、蒟醤の語源の説明があり、 「インド・マレーシア地方では、檳榔樹（びんろうじゅ）とボウフン（カラスガイの一種の殻より製した白い粉末）を蒟醤の生葉に包んで巻き、嗜好品として常習的に噛む。 これを噛むと口臭が消え、爽やかな気分になるかわりに、その汁は檳榔樹の赤い色素などで紅色になり、あたかも口から血を出しているかのように見える。」 私は学生の頃、バックパックを背負いインド横断の旅をしたのだが、リクシャーを引く痩せた男の人達は、これをたいていは噛んで吐き捨てていた。 初めて見た時は、血を吐いているのかとリクシャを降りようかと思ったほど驚いたが、やがて見慣れた光景となり、ずっと煙草のようなものかと思っていた。 そんな爽やかなエチケット嗜好品だったとは！ 思わぬところで、長年はっきり分かっていなかったことが明らかになり気分が良くなりました。 #讃岐漆芸 #laquejaponaise #lacquer #漆 #アート #工芸 #本屋 #玉楮象谷 #磯井如真 #蒟醤 #真美術書店 #あきる野市

This is one of the ten top treasures of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, which you can see at the new Zhijiang location. This is a 7,000 year old lacquer bowl unearthed from the Hemudu Site in Yuyao, Ningbo. It's one of the earliest lacquerware ever found by archaeologists. Even though experts believe lacquer as an artform was fully formed in China about 5,000 years ago, we can see that some red pigment was added to the lacquer on the bowl. Since China's paleolithic era, red and black have been used to represent night and day. Timing For the lacquer to be dried, it needs high humidity , dust free and warm temperature environment , sounds like Sanur 😊. It depends on how thick the lacquer is applied, or mix that i use for the kintsugi. For this teapot, i added clay powder to lacquer to build density that can fill in the crack. Wait for three days before i applied sevral layers of thin lacquer then ready to put gold powder on top. I waited for one night before i was dusting off the excess gold powder . There ‘s another teapot on progress that might need at least 3 months time to finished.
