Some of my favourite bits at the plot this evening! 😌 This evening I built a new bed out of random bits of wood we had going, the plan is to hopefully have lotsssss of blueberry bushes in there 😍 I finally set up the wildlife camera too! Thanks to my plot neighbour @allotmentlife31a we know that a few nighttime creatures wander up our joining pathway. This week I made the first trip to the allotment in ages, what with all the rain, the motivation hasn’t been there. Trying to get our shit together at plot 30a since 2022. Last weekend my self and half pint no1 went down the plot and stuck the onion sets in the ground finally. It’s all been a bit slow due to the arrival of half pint v2 So I showed Gus what to do with putting the onions in and left him to it. Must say I was impressed with his ability to follow the instructions. He managed to plant a who row before the inevitable boredom set in. It did however allow me to get another section dug over. 🚨 We’ve had a bug hotel extension people!! I decided this was the evening to tackle the bug house that I’d partly taken down and left for months 🙃 I broke down one of the pallets we had to create a layer on top of the bricks, I need some straw and pine cones to fill that up, I then broke up a terracotta pot to add some curved details, I used the bamboo edging I bought ages ago, some kindling sticks, left over bricks and wood and rocks! The inside is an absolute mess of broken bricks, bamboo, rocks and rotten wood, but I’m sure the bugs won’t mind! 😂 I just need LOTS of pine cones to cover the top and I’ll be happy! I also de-grassed the wildflower bed, added a layer of compost and sprinkled in some new wildflower seeds, Installed a hedgehog house!! After seeing the footage from our plot neighbour I knew I just had to get a house! And installed the new cute little bird bath! You know when you buy something online and it comes miniature..? 😅 still cute though! Solid day at the plot last week! 🌱 planted out sweet peas 🌱 filled another bed and planted onions 🌱 weeded the strawberry bed 🌱 weeded around the rhubarb 🌱 weeded the celery bed 🌱 hand cut all of the mares tail before strimming! 🌱 built two obelisks for the blackberries (one kindly donated by our lovely plot neighbour) Still lots to do! So, yesterday afternoon we got seeding for 2024 underway, with the assistant being the boss as per usual. Here we were setting a tray of bulbing onions, never started onions off this early before and I’ve never had much luck with them from seed, usually cause I find them too fiddly to deal with, but I shall persist with them this year and see how we go. Myself and Gus came to an agreement as we are both fussy eaters, that we both have to try everything we grow. So, my inner geek is coming out for this post. The highs and lows of the weather from 2023 Our new house is a bit more sheltered than our old one, so the high wind speed was a lot lower than expected. We’ve had a lot more rain than 2022 more than 560mm more!!! And this year seems to be staring wet too. Happy allotmenting for the coming year! Plenty of veg in the ground still, leeks, chard, kale, parsley, rocket, beetroot, pakchoi, carrots. Planted garlic today; half the bed is ‘proper’ garlic bulbs. Think I’ll plant the other half with garlic from the veg shop & see which does better. I know I am one of the lucky ones, but my allotment site is a proper little community, not only are we there for advice, support and weekly coffee mornings but we also help each other out. It is lovely to say I have some amazing friends there steming from those in their 20's right up to their 80's How awesome is this chair I've been made. A moving present for my new plot! Earlier this year I spotted someone had thrown away their rhubarb crown on top of a pile of weeds and it had started to regrow so I decided to rescue a bit and shoved it next to the greenhouse to see how it got on. It has gone absolutely crazy and I’ve resisted the temptation to pick any to give it chance to establish.
