I Grow THESE even though I DON’T like them! 🤢 Even though I have really tried, broad or (fava) beans are just not really for me! 😬🌱 Don’t get me wrong, home grown beans straight from the kitchen garden are far superior to shop bought, but they’re still definitely not my favoured garden snack. However, eating them isn’t my main reason for growing them… Did you know that they are actually not a bean but a type of vetch, a common cover crop and a fantastic natural fertilizer or (green manure)? As a cover crop, they improve soil fertility, suppress weeds, support microbials populations and fix nitrogen. They are a great way to keep the soil covered throughout winter to help prevent soil erosion, compaction and nutrient run off. I am sowing (Super Aquadulce) a variety for autumn sowing that will produce a nice early crop. And I soak them for a few hours to speed up germination. I then sow them outside 6 inches apart, with 12-16 inches between rows and around an inch deep. You can sow them in deep seed trays if pests are an issue in your area and then plant out at 2 or 3 weeks old. Then as well as keeping the soil covered throughout winter, you’ll have a nice early crop of broad beans (to give away if your me 😂) in spring. Not sure how to prep favas? Remove the beans from the long pods. Blanch the beans for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes in a pot of boiling salted water. Drain and let cool slightly. Mondays are for preparing healthy dips for a new week. For this week I used my favourite legumes which are now at the end of their season - broad beans, putting them to good use in a dip as a replacement to the traditional hummus. I simply blanche double-podded broad beans in a pot of salted boiling water, just a few minutes. I then drain them under cold running water to ensure the bright green colour is retained. In a mixer I place the broad beans, a good amount of mint leaves, a handful of raw pistachios, parsley, lemon juice, ground black pepper, extra virgin olive oil, half a garlic clove (optional) and blend everything until smooth. I always add a splash of water to loosen the consistency if too thick, and add salt as necessary. Once ready I place it in the fridge to cool. To serve, I transfer the dip into a pretty bowl and top it with more extra virgin olive oil, fresh mint leaves and toasted pistachios, and accompany it with flax seed crackers and carrot sticks to keep it 100% healthy. Spring vegetable fideua. I’m really missing cooking - foot in plaster, standing on one leg with sharp knives is not advisable, so Mr A’s been doing it all, but I was able to help today by podding the broad beans at least. This recipe, which is a kind of paella but with toasted vermicelli instead of rice was something new for us and we enjoyed it a lot. Peas and broad beans, saffron and sweet smoked paprika are cooked along with the vermicelli and stock, then artichokes are added and it’s popped under the grill for a few mins. It’s finished with a lemony broad bean salsa. In season Sunday (i know it’s Monday, it’s been a rough week!) Broad beans 🫛 one of my childhood favourites, a nutrient powerhouse & such a versatile ingredient. Packed with sociable fibre to aid digestion and lower cholesterol, folate, protein, minerals such as copper & magnesium, b vitamins and also levodopa - a compound that your body converts to dopamine. These lovely little beans are also packed full of anti oxidants, iron and contribute towards good bone health. You can do so much with these, I love them freshly picked in a green salad: Broad bean, feta & watercress salad 400g (podded weight) fresh or frozen broad beans small pack mint, leaves picked and very finely chopped 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 100g bag watercress 100g feta, crumbled 25g pine nuts, lightly toasted • Put the broad beans in a bowl, pour over boiling water from the kettle, then drain and transfer to a bowl of cold water. • Remove the skins from the broad beans by splitting them with your fingernail and slipping out the bean. Make the dressing by combining the mint and olive oil in a small bowl. Season generously. • Toss the watercress with the broad beans, feta and the dressing. Scatter with the pine nuts and serve. Random pink broad bean flowers seem to be a hit with the bees too. I’ve popped a marker on that particular plant so that I can remember to save some seed and see if the same colour flowers appear next year. . Had a great session at the plot yesterday, only two more beds left to tidy and sort. Have managed to rope the other half in today so I’m going to see if I can get him to top up some of the paths with some fresh wood chip.
