So often my finished works come about by seeing the individual elements scattered across the studio table and recognizing their relationship to each other. The idea wheels will begin to turn and a fluttering of meaning begins to stir. This arrangement is a continuation of my vessels and nests series. Much of which I’ve explored behind the scenes of what I share of my work for sale or examples of classes I teach. The centerpiece is my most recent Momigami paper vessel sculpture. It is still very much a work in progress while I sit with it and observe and listen. I wait for it to tell me what it wants to be. Maybe not in the fullness of the complete composition yet, but in the next step, next layer, next process. My work very much evolves from the beginning stages of curiosity to the end product. And I have to admit that this deeply contemplative approach sometimes stirs up some insecurities when I share what I’m exploring and then see others inspired by the ideas and materials I share, develop an entire body of work from that point of inspiration seemingly overnight. In my workshops I address this insecurity in the participants who have a similar slow brewing method of working, by reminding them that it is a tactic of our internal Art Critic. It will take us out of our intuitive knowing into the traps of comparison and perfectionism in order to block us from being creative. It is a deeply vulnerable act to show up and allow ourselves to be seen in all of our imperfections and flaws, without makeup so to speak. Which is exactly what we do when we show our art. Here are some snapshots of my trip to Málaga, Spain: the beautiful door to my apartment Right Next Door to a sculptors house with the inscription: in this house lived and died the sculptor Pedro de Menas! (In the 1600’s)! How’s that for serendipity? And I’m here to attend an international sculpture conference. Also shown is the lovely Cafe Berlin where I have my Americano, zumo ( fresh squeezed orange juice) and my toasted ham sandwich every morning. At a nearby museum I saw these sculptures created by my neighbor in an exhibition called Fiercely Human which discussed the “odor of sanctity” embodied in the artwork of the 1600’s. Working in Mexico in my bedroom without access to my regular tables, tools and supplies is an exercise in resourcefulness. Unusual conditions can yield great results. It reminds me that it’s not where you work but how you work. Most artists do not have dream studios. My admiration goes to those who make great work regardless of the space or situation. I read somewhere that James Joyce wrote at the kitchen table at times surrounded by the cacophony of daily life. Here’s to making art no matter where you are. The hole is functional but also pays homage to my pottery background. There is a tribe of Native Americans in the southwest who created Mimbres pottery from 750-1150 AD. During burial ceremonies a hole was made in a beautifully painted bowl. It was thought to be so the spirit can leave the body. Our first meet up for the Sculpture Network Conference sculpturenetwork began at the Picasso Museum of Malaga museopicassomalaga It was so exciting to start meeting people gathered together from all over Europe with a few Canadians and me as the only American (I think) about 60-70 altogether including presenters. Over drinks in the courtyard of the 500 year old restored building - note interior ceiling woodwork from the time of the Moors, we started introducing ourselves. It was such a relief to meet a room full of sculptors, curators and historians after my solo week. Some highlights in photos: Pablo Picasso’s christening dress and an early drawing. (These I saw at the museocasanatalpicasso earlier in the day at the house next door to the museum where he was born). We had a wonderful guide lead us through the museum where I photographed some of my favorite little known paintings. We’re planning a solo exhibition at Catalina Museum for Art and History catalinamuseum in 2024. He’s been on my radar for about 5 years when I met him at my studio liquidation sale in Emeryville in 2017 when I decided to make my move to Los Angeles permanent, and he acquired a sculpture. I kept in touch with him through my newsletter and sent him postcards and other material. I didn’t hear a peep until he emailed me for a studio visit. It’s a great example of being persistent and thinking about the long haul. Things happen when the stars align and not a minute earlier. Well, well, well! What a milestone. It took 3 years to get to 100K followers. I posted twice a week and experimented with a lot of different posts to see what worked. I was inspired by studiokieu because she had such a heartfelt way of communicating with her followers and did a great job of telling her story. My friend Josh haglerjosh had a different approach and used instagram as a way to describe his intellectual approach to his process of painting. I decided to talk about what my daily life is like in the studio. I also like to support Arts Organizations. After a while the algorithm took me on a whirlwind ride. Then it stopped completely for about two months and I lost followers. I thought that was the end of my ride. Some things are out of our control. But I can’t help but think that slow and steady with a bulldog’s persistence will make the same thing happen for all of us. Here are some snapshots of my trip to Málaga, Spain: the beautiful door to my apartment Right Next Door to a sculptors house with the inscription: in this house lived and died the sculptor Pedro de Menas! (In the 1600’s)! How’s that for serendipity? And I’m here to attend an international sculpture conference. Also shown is the lovely Cafe Berlin where I have my Americano, zumo ( fresh squeezed orange juice) and my toasted ham sandwich every morning. At a nearby museum I saw these sculptures created by my neighbor in an exhibition called Fiercely Human which discussed the “odor of sanctity” embodied in the artwork of the 1600’s. The streets and sidewalks in the area where I’m staying are paved with marble. Such beauty in this old section of the city. Thank you all for providing tips on being a solo traveler. Materials are salvaged rope from an old Red Cross Army tent banner and cyanotype on mulberry paper. The pods at are hollow and very light weight. Okay, let's hear your ideas for a title. Our first meet up for the Sculpture Network Conference sculpturenetwork began at the Picasso Museum of Malaga museopicassomalaga It was so exciting to start meeting people gathered together from all over Europe with a few Canadians and me as the only American (I think) about 60-70 altogether including presenters. Over drinks in the courtyard of the 500 year old restored building - note interior ceiling woodwork from the time of the Moors, we started introducing ourselves. It was such a relief to meet a room full of sculptors, curators and historians after my solo week. Some highlights in photos: Pablo Picasso’s christening dress and an early drawing. (These I saw at the museocasanatalpicasso earlier in the day at the house next door to the museum where he was born). We had a wonderful guide lead us through the museum where I photographed some of my favorite little known paintings.
